    I confess, bought daughter when she was 11 a Browing A-Bolt .243 long before there was a 6.5 Creed. Couple years back, before the ammo cluster, GunB roker auction had 200 round case of 100gr. Federal .243 S.P. no one seemed to want, so I got it for $74.00.
    Four years or so ago I bought two new in the box 6.5 Creedmoors, have yet to buy even a 20 round box of ammo for them.
    I even passed on a $75.00 6.5 DPMS Creed barrel for the next AR10 build.
    There are only two 1,000 yard ranges in Florida open to the public, and my FBI friends are all retired now so I can't mooch their turf.
    My Rem. 700 BDL in .270 gets the call for deer camp, and the AR15's in 7.62x39 get the call for pigs in cqb palmettos.
    Actually, sorry I bothered buying the 6.5 Creeds.

      Fun fact, in WW1, Frank Luke, the balloon buster, shot down fourteen observation balloons but l he used a biplane and l think incendiary boolats. He was our 2nd leading Ace after Rickenbacker, and a crack shot growing up in his youth. The call signs for the F22s out of Langley that shot down the first balloon were Frank 1 and Frank 2. Like l said, fun but trivial, my dads squadron was stationed at Langley when l was a kid, so it caught my eye.

      Truthfully? Anything that pokes a hole in the fabric will bring a balloon down. The only question is "how quickly?" Answer? The bigger the hole, the faster it drops. Don't care how long? A needle will work. Do care about quickness? Use an explosive rocket. And for the WW1 ace, they used hydrogen gas back then - explosive with any spark. Now? They use helium - NOT explosive under ANY circumstances. Consequently you have to find a way to destroy the balloon envelope without assistance from anything.

  • @kirkboswell2575

    When talking about the 6.5 Creedmoor, several things should be kept in mind. First, Hornady came up with it for looonngg range target shooting. Does that job extremely well. Then, because it was proving so accurate, hunters latched on, stuck some hunting bullets in it, and GEE, makes a great midrange hunting caliber. Because they wanted "heavy for caliber" bullets, they gave the rifles a 1:8 twist. Smart move. That's why the 243 won out over the 244 Remington - faster twist allowing heavier bullets. Even though Remington corrected the twist with the 6mm Remington, it was too late. The 243 had the field. Same thing with the 6.5 Creedmoor vs 260 Remington. Faster twist for the Creedmoor causing the 260 to take a back seat (even though the 260 has slightly better ballistics with standard weight bullets). For comparison purposes, the 6.5 Creedmoor should be compared to the 6.5x55 Swede. And when comparing performance against the 308, both the 6.5 and the 308 should be shooting 150 grain bullets.

    • @joegreen4089

    • @kirkboswell2575
      @kirkboswell2575 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@joegreen4089 - For a more realistic comparison. The 6.5 Creedmoor can use bullets up to about 160 grains, so why not make things equal as much as possible.

    • @kirkboswell2575
      @kirkboswell2575 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@workct4102 - I think you are missing my point. The 6.5 Creedmoor was designed to use heavy bullets. Using bullets of 120/125 grains isn't utilizing all its potential. If we are talking about the 260 Remington, then sure, because that was what it was designed for. It's rifling twist is too slow to stabilize a heavier bullet. But the 6.5 is capable of much more. Just like the 6.5x55 Swede. It was designed to use 155/160 grain bullets. Using lighter bullets in the 6.5x55 isn't utilizing all its capable of. When comparing the 6.5 Creedmoor to the 308, you should use equal weight bullets that are within the design parameters. Thus 150 grain bullets for both. Penetration of the 6.5, in that situation, should be greater than the 308. For a secondary experiment, you could use 145 grain bullets for the 6.5, and 168 grain bullets for the 308. That would show what an efficient load could do with each.
      The 5.56 was initially designed for 55 grain bullets. Our allies said "not heavy enough" and proceeded to put in a faster twist and heavier bullets, and time has proven them right. Nowadays you hear all the time about 70 and 80 grain 22 cal bullets - something unheard of in the beginning. So now, 5.56's come from the factory with a 1:7 twist.

      @johnafleenor2986 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@bestestusername The $30 per box is not all that uncommon for plinker rounds in either caliber. For the better BC ammo, the 6.5 Creedmoor’s are quite a bit more expensive than the 243’s. Not uncommon to see the same prices you are. The less expensive ammo is generally lightweight ammo and not what I would use for hunting any sort of large game. The prices have come down somewhat since the Covid BS, but they have come back down to what everyone would consider as “normal”. I glad that we are starting to see a variety of ammo back on store shelves but there is still a lot of room for improvement on stock levels.

Is typically 129 to 156 grains both have special ammo a little lighter/heavier. Re-do the test using ammo from the top end weight of the Creed. and you will likely get a different result. There is some crossover use but I haven't used my 243 in forever, I use the 5.56 for smaller game and predator hunts(considering a 22 creed or 224 Valkyrie), jump to the 6.5 creed for pretty much all the medium game deer/black bear and then increase to the new 7mm prc for anything larger. I just like the idea of having the extra range and efficiency when reloading. Nothing wrong with the older calibers or the new as long as everyone is honest about the cartridge as well as their own capabilities.

    .243 seemed weaker on the rear impact. The creedmore seems to have carried more impact energy. I hunt with .45-70 or .45 Colt mostly for deer. I just built a 6.5 Grendel though, so may try that out this year. ;)

    Leaning toward 6.5CM on my lr308 build because of the energy and trajectory out to decent distances, but can't shake the 308 nod either. Can only get one. Can't afford more. Impressed with the 6.5 Grendel in my ar15. Took two deer at 175 yards with that. The CM is a steroid version. Hmmm.... decisions.

    Has anyone ever done a 30-06 vs 7mm mag penetration test like this? Couldn't find anything on TH-cam .. I know most will say 7mm and I would agree,,,,, I think ,,,,but would the 30 cal bullet take longer to stop? Something Ive wondered for a while an sorry to anyone if this was a dumb question , I've owned both but not at the same time, an they did great on deer had very close results but just wondering I guess

    Either is an excellent and versatile cartridge. I'm not a huge fan of the .243 but they've been made in millions, and you'll never have problems finding parts, dies, reloading gear and primers for the .243. The Creedmoor is still making its bones. I like the 6.5 bullet better than the 6mm but varmint shooters might prefer the 6mm.

    Could you please someday do a penetration/damage test comparison of .22 LR lead round nose standard velocity versus .22 LR hollow point high velocity, either on paper plates, clay blocks or milk jugs (or, ideally, all three)? I hypothesize that CCI .22 LR lead round nose standard velocity would penetrate farther than the CCI .22 LR mini mag hollow points, for example. If possible, I think it would be great to compare four different CCI .22 LR loads: the Standard Velocity lead round nose, the Mini Mag copper plated round nose, the Mini Mag hollow points and the Stanger hollow points. I think the the copper plated hollow point Mini Mags will penetrate the farthest, but the Stangers will do the most damage to the front portion of the target. I'm finding a lot of accuracy comparisons but not a lot of penetration/damage comparisons. Thanks.

    It's hard for me to pick a 6.5 creedmoor when I seen what happened to the 260 and it had a little more velocity than the creedmoor only thing helps it is a 1-8 twist even though I seen a factory 260 that had a 1-8 twist barrel

      6.5 has become one of the most popular long range calibers. It's BC is amazing and ammo had become extremely affordable. I am getting boxes of Norma whitetail for 20 a box and have sub MOA accuracy at 100 yards. Take down whitetail great to.

      For punching paper I like the creedmoor but i like 7mm's and 30 calibers more for hunting personally bigger wound channels of a 7 mm08 and 308 will put a little more blood on the ground if the deer runs but if a person takes a responsibile shots that they very confident with it doesn't take much to kill a deer my grandpa killed 1 with a 25 colt Jr one time

      I have a Winchester Model 70 Featherweight in 6.5x55 Swedish. It has a 1 in 7.67 twist. It loves the heavier 6.5 bullets. Been shooting 140 grain Nosler Partition in it at 2800+ fps, since 1992. It is beautifully accurate with that load.

    Not sure how many deer I lost growing up with 243 but it was enough to sell it and buy 30-06 like my dad had. Just had to many perfectly made shot's and the deer still ran nearly out of the county before being done. Even some of the one's my dad's buddy's would get after with a dog they couldn't believe how far they ran with perfect placement shot's. After several suggestions from fellow deer camp members I joined the aught six get it done camp 👍
