The Nightmare on Elm Street movies are scary on a whole level man. I don't even remember a scene where four grade school children ran around punching spiders, but it's because I repress it.
Probably because Rare was an independent studio that needed money. A lot of licensed games come from that angle - you're a small studio, get approached by a publisher who'll pay you for a quick license game, and you do it.

Alice Johnson - Alice was the Dream Master, or the guardian of the positive gate, the gateway to good dreams. And as such, she had the power (and responsibility) to guard the sleeper whilst they dreamed. And as such, Alice had the unique ability to absorb the dream powers of Freddy's most recent victims.She also absorb kristen powers pulling people into dreams, and gymnastics like agility , rick powers of karate mastery and sheila power of technology and Debbie toughness. Mark Gray - The ability to morph into his comic book character, The Phantom Prowler. Rick Johnson - karate mastery
They should make a final "Nightmare on Elm Street" one-A movie (the actual franchise is over anyway) where the Slasher trope is subverted and the good guys (an ensemble) actually reach a major victory and blast Freddy into oblivion without anyone else dying. ;)

FourScore's a hell of an accessory, and only a handful of games supported it, mostly sports games or other purely competitive things. i think this is the only platformer that uses it?
That because in mario all the players bump into each other and stuff. Almost every other game (this one included) the players all "ghost" thru each other as to not get in each others way. I personally believe NSMB Wii was designed that way on purpose for the LOL's
I still remember a dream I had after renting this game from Major Video. My brother and myself had bunk beds and a Fraggle Rock poster in our old room and in my dream my great grandfather who we called Grampa Whiskers did a backflip over our bunk beds, but it was just a shadow shape that my brain interpreted as him. Only time in my life that I was paralyzed with fear. I tried to scream Mom!but nothing would come out. And it was because we were playing scary games way to young.
This game really isn't as bad as people say it is. Being sort of generic is about its greatest sin, but for the glut of licensed titles on the NES, this is one of the better ones. Also it was developed by Rare, which has to be worth something.
Quite surprising how an NES can handle 4 players running around at the same time (even though there is a bit of slowdown), but hey, that's Rare for you.

It's a tool assisted speedrun, there are no real 4 people that are playing this game. It's just predetermined input on 4 emulated controllers.
