    What is a TAS? / prog61
    Goal:
    -Complete the game with one credit
    -Getting as little damage as possible (without taking weeks to optimize)
    Notes:
    -It's far from a perfect TAS.
    -This is my first TAS of this game. I hadn't planned ahead. I only reacted to what was happening on the screen. Now that I see the final video, it's easy to spot things I could do better. It will be for next time.
    -I lost a bit of energy here and there and more in battle with the T-1000. I think it's possible not to lose any, but it would be very hard for a human (but not for a terminator?).
    -I didn't get 100% accuracy in the stats, I think sometimes enemies spawn near the edge of the screen and disappear quickly without giving you time to shoot them.
    -But now seeing the finished video, I wonder why I let go of some of the robots in the 1st level.
    -And keep in mind that it is the T-800 that plays. Since it only has a 6502 processor in its head (as in the Apple ][, as clearly shown in the first movie at 37:29) he doesn't have enough processing power to keep up with the game 😀😀😀
    -The rng depends among other things on the position of the crosshair, so it is easy to abuse it in a TAS.
    -I abuse it in the 'Trip to Skynet' section. I move the position of the crosshair before a flying enemy enters the screen until they don't shoot at me or the truck.
    -But it's easy to make a mistake, I had to redo some parts 2-3 times because of me moving the crosshair too soon.
    -I'm used to pointing at a target a few frames before it enters the screen, but if I did that in this game, the fact that I moved the crosshairs makes the enemy appear somewhere else. And sometimes I only see that when I replay the whole TAS, so I have to redo the last part that I did. Maybe there is also a small problem with the "save state".
    -I was surprised to see that I hadn't shot enough things in Cyberdyne's office, I had the impression that we didn't have to shoot all the things but I was wrong. Now that I see the video, I can see what I didn't shoot. I should have used the shotgun more often at this point.
    -But since it's the T-800 that plays, he largely preferred that Cyberdyne not be destroyed since without them he wouldn't exist. 😀
    - In the steel mill, punching a hole in the liquid nitrogen tank is sometimes difficult to do. Sometimes a shotgun blast does the trick, but other times you have to shoot 3 times. I do not know why.
    -From the steel mill, I didn't try not to get hit, as long as I didn't die that was fine with me.
    -The last battle with the T-1000 has 4 phases:
    -To start you have to shoot him so that he falls on the bridge and disappears by liquefying
    -2nd phase is when he is close to you, shoot his head until his head splits in two.
    -3rd phase is to shoot him with the shogun to knock him back until he is about to fall into the molten steel
    -get the grenade launcher that will fall from the far left or right of the screen, shoot it 2 times.
    Maybe I should redo the 2nd part of the game from the desktop? You tell me.
    It took about 30 hours of work to make this TAS. Thanks for watching.

    ====Description====
    Terminator 2: Judgment Day or T2 is a light gun shooter based on the film of the same name, produced by Midway Manufacturing Company as an arcade video game in 1991. Developed in tandem with the movie, several actors from the film reprise their roles for the game and are featured as part of the game's photorealistic digitized graphics. The game's plot largely follows that of the film, casting up to two players as the T-800 "terminator" cyborg from the film, sent back in time to protect John Connor from assassination by the T-1000 terminator. A success in arcades, home conversions of the game were released by Acclaim Entertainment for various platforms under the title of T2: The Arcade Game in order to avoid confusion with the numerous tie-in games also based on the movie.

      Many of my TAS aren't perfect, some are a first try with games I'm not familiar with, you can see them as my first draft. But I post them anyway because I find them fun to watch and it gives a base to start a more complete TAS.
      This TAS took me about 30 hours of work to do. I will do a 100% TAS of this game eventually but it will take a lot longer to do. But for now I prefer to work on other games like this since it seems like I'm the only one working on this type of games for now, but that will change when the driver for MAME in BizHawk will be more functional.

    I can't tell you how many times I've played a frustrating arcade rail shooter and thought, man, what I wouldn't give to have perfect laserlike accuracy. I don't even care if I still have to continue, I just want to be able to make some damn progress! Well, once again you came through, and I get to see deadly juggernauts taken apart like Lego, that fragile red truck making it through without a scratch, orbs never knowing what hit them, and an evil world-threatening computer being reduced to a piffling annoyance.
    You don't see many games like this on TASVideos. Most arcade games from the 90's either ramp up the punishment on exceptional players or are punishing to begin with, and shooters have a harsh kill-or-be-killed ethos, neither of which is very appealing to the TASVideos community. They want to take shortcuts, optimize weaponry, take damage to save time, and make perfect maneuvers, not shovel in somewhat fewer theoretical tokens than normal. No one speedrunner or website is going to cover everything, which is why it's great that you're here to cover games like this.
    Deeply satisfying video. Congrats, you have a new subscriber! :-D
    I do think that someday you should do a 2-Player TAS. One of the things you've no doubt noticed (and which a lot of players in my arcades learned pretty quickly) is that this game was designed for two players. A lone Terminator _struggles._ Too many targets, too many ways to take damage, too many things to keep track of. I'm not surprised that you weren't able to destroy Cyberdyne Systems... you just didn't have the firepower!

    I own a T2 machine. It's the crown jewel of my Terminator collection, and the only arcade machine I own. I've played it... a lot. I mean, really. I've beaten it many times, both solo and two-player, and I've beaten the official world record for the game (as recorded by Twin Galaxies - I didn't record it. Oh well.).
    I say all that just so I can say this: Holy hell this is AWESOME!! Totally proves that cyborgs rule! 😄 The whole thing is great, and I'm especially impressed by the RNG manipulation on the truck level.

    • @Datan0de
      @Datan0de 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The "trick" to getting past the truck scene is to either do it two-player and both be really focused with a bunch of missiles in reserve and get it on the first go (Super Truck Bonus!), or let John die a few times and just stock up on missiles at the beginning of the round.
      Either way, mostly ignore the endoskeletons. The aerial HKs have to be the top priority, and you have to hose them down with missiles the moment they're on screen!

    • @Loader2K1
      @Loader2K1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Datan0de: Well, from the version of the game I've played (the Genesis/MD version), when playing by yourself, you actually CAN'T ignore the Endoskeletons because they'll take your lifebar down quickly.

    • @Datan0de
      @Datan0de 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Loader2K1 Oh sure, they'll mess you up. But to get past the level in the arcade version you need to always hit the HKs first, then you can take a moment to deal with the endos (shoot 'em in the legs!) before going back to the ready position for the next HK.
      If playing solo, I'll keep the crosshair either right where the HKs come out on the left side and be ready to snap to the right side, or in the middle between the two entry points. If you're playing two-player, each pick a side to wait, but both players should focus on pumping missiles into every HK that comes on screen.

    I feel the purpose of the TAS was a no damage run. Not a kill/destroy everything run.
    To this end, not destroying all the destructibles on certain levels (Human hideout and the computer house) and not killing every terminator is fine. I am not even sure if a 100% destructible/enemy run is even possible.
    As an aside, destroying more background desructibles does give more score. Lots of destructible stuff in the computer house and in the human hideout, the lights, fire extinguisher on the wall and other stuff can all be destroyed.
    Also yeah the good ending, but you have already acknowledged this.

    (Feeling nostalgic) I'm not sure how appealing the game would have been if the first four levels had not been set during the 2029 Future War. Fors my friends and I being 11 or 12 years old, we were more interested in that aspect of the first two movies, perhaps because Cameron only gave us a glimpse of the blue tinted world of the ruins, chrome HKs, plasma rifles. And so the first level back in 1991 was a dream come true.
    Most of us (friends and I, fans of the movies) dropped a ton of quarters on the level 3 truck mission, merely because we wanted to see Level 4 and Skynet. As they weren't shown in the first two. -- Once Skynet was beat, many just walked away like it was the end of the game.
    I wouldn't mind seeing a faithful remake of this game with today's graphics, perhaps have it be more of a 3D (moving forward) progression than a side-scroll. Even with the limits of the graphics back in 1991, whoever designed the flying HKs was a fan of the movies, as they made an effort to get the detail as accurate as they could, given the resolution. -- So, as frustrating as the difficulty was, playing the the future war was what kept us coming back. They could have made the truck mission a little..less..challenging though, lol.

      There are three big sticking points (Trip to Skynet, protecting the police truck, the final blow to the T-1000) which absolutely require a very steady hand and sharp reflexes. You can't buy your way to victory like in, say, Smash TV or Rampage World Tour.
      Nonetheless, this isn't the sort of achievement I'd _brag_ about. More like "Man, did we spend _way_ too much time on video games or what?" followed by good-natured laughter.
