    A real gem in Omega's catalogue that looks to be on its way out. Will the Brand revive this collection this year or wait until 2027? Either way, a great piece that has some of the best tech specs on the market (that's very often overlooked) 🥃

      I couldn't agree more, myself I do own a Rolex Air King 116900, but if I had to fill that spot in my collection, daily wearing and protected against magnetism, with a watch from another brand it would be with a Rail Master absolutely no hesitation, the one with the "blue jeans" dial to match with my clothes, loving that fully brushed look, great specs and it's kind of a bargain

      Air-King is Rolex's Railmaster, right? Fascinating when you think about it. Both brilliant, top specifications and hardly ever spoken about (compared to the main line pieces) Thanks for sharing Vincent 🥃@@vincentschneuwly9783

      @@ID-Guyas you say in the video the connection is more with the Millegaus than the Air King, since both watches were created with protection against magnetic fields in mind, but to me there is a big difference: the Millegaus is the scientist watch the one a searcher would wear when the Rail Master, as its name suggests, is more a "clue collar" watch.

    The clear standout for me is the denim-dialled variant: no fauxtina, and an eye-catching, quirky flash of "rust" on the second hand. It hearkens back to vintage design motifs without pretending to be older than it is. No false IDs and trying to buy beer as a kid. I'm surprised you didn't choose to mention it (I'm biased, of course!).
    I found mine at a really good price and bought it out of curiosity, knowing I was unlikely to lose money if I were to sell it.
    The Railmaster has since replaced my IWC Mark XVIII, Planet Ocean 8500, Tudor BB GMT, and Aquaterras (8900 and 2500). No more watch rotation and no more coveting new pieces. I wear it all day, every day. I've completed my commercial aviation training wearing it, and I'll never sell it. Less really is more.

      And the question is where could they go with it from here? I mean the Aqua Terra has so much to offer (and does so much) Does it mean that they'd have to double down on the Field Watch route and make a more refined, simple piece? I'm game for that idea... but then them charging like 8K for the watch? 😆 It's always a win-win! Thank you m'boy and have a cracker of a Sunday! 🥃

    The Railmaster is a great watch that has an identity crisis - it looks like a field watch but has a seahorse serpent on the caseback and is a Seamaster category model 🥴 that Omega buried it in its hot mess of a catalogue. No wonder it isn’t popular - awareness of its existence is next to nil.
    If Omega had the sense to give it its own category on the website, that alone would make a world of difference. I’d like it be be ultra tooly - even more than now - with for this type of watch a date option (at 6) - think train operation, 24hr clockface, date for overnight services, ultra ultra legible, a lumed dial (!), emphasise unparalleled accuracy (train to run on time, not have accidents), dump the sea motifs use rail motifs, that sort of thing would really make it stand out and be taken notice of.

    • @ID-Guy
      @ID-Guy  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Very well said. It's always down to identity that makes all the difference. Ironically under the "Seamaster" name, the Railmaster is submerged. It would be so good to see them smash these out of the park with simpler, more focused designs 🥃

    For Omega to make 'nice' watches again...and the Railmaster... I'd love to see a 'thinner' more elegant package, 20mm lug width, 38mm case, put the polished elements back into the lyre lug case, then remove the sector. Your render, using the SM300 as a base with the broad-arrow hands looked amazing!
    Omega needs thinner watches - and 60+ hour power reserves!

    I loved the look of this one. It was the first new Omega I had bought having two used of other models.
    I wore it once and got a mark on its case. The fifth time it lightly scraped a hard foam wall and it made more scratches.
    For a utility watch I could not believe how damaged it got from such mild knocks.
    I have 150 watches and only a Citizen ever got marked up this easy.
    I wish I never bought this watch. Now I can't wear it without staring at the marks and I can't flip it without a substantial loss.

    I snapped up a Railmaster for an incredible price, and haven’t looked back. I have four Omega watches, including my Railmaster, but this one is my daily wear. It is bulletproof! No polished surfaces to immediately scratch up, it is a brushed tool watch, or as you offered, a field watch! It doesn’t seem to lose a second. Accurate does not do the 8806 justice! I disdain distractions like tiny date windows, this has none of that. It is a straight up timepiece. As the lousy economy erodes the secondary market, I started looking at the Aqua Terra. But I bought my Railmaster new. It has only been on my wrist. I bought the denim version, but quickly found an Omega bracelet with 007 engraved on the clasp! Think about how many times 007 has been on trains! If Omega were smart, they would bring Bond back, with him wearing a Railmaster!

    I always saw the Railmaster as Omega's "dressed up" version of the Longines sector dial watch (which is a real banger in it's own right) and in that light, it never really did much for me. But the second you said, "think of it as Omega's Field watch" and it was like a lightning bolt and it makes so much more sense. Great content as usual and Omega should put you on the payroll.

  • @rvm1789

    I own the denim dial version, and really like it. Everyone's comments were interesting. However, I'd love to see Omega really double-down on the railroad history that underlies its existence as a model. As you suggest, it gets "submerged" (love that reference!) in the Seamaster AT line-ups, and Omega simply does not do enough to emphasize the intended historical heritage of the watch. What if Omega re-designed the RM to play off of the many historic Omega railroad pocket watch designs: white enamel dial, prominent railroad track, black vintage (perhaps "Breguet-ish"?) hands, raised numerals, lose the hippocampus caseback and replace it with a really impressive solid railcar engine design, etc. In short, don't just lightly "hint" at the railroad heritage; actually lean into it (that heritage was the main reason I purchased my RM). Give the RM its own distinct identity. Maybe two versions: one with a date at 6:00; one without. Railway travel played such a rich history throughout the world for well over a century. I think there are more than enough customers who would connect with a vintage-styled, historically-referenced design that directly plays off the railway heritage. If they were to do that, I'd be the first to lay down my plastic. Addendum: gotta say, tho, that I love your idea of incorporating the broad arrow hour hand.

I love the Trilogy reissue the most, but this one is quite a fun model and I would hope they refresh it. I’ve always liked this watch ever since it came out a long time ago. However, I feared that the dark tone of the faux lume would prevent it from aging gracefully past 10+ years. It felt to me that we would look back on a watches like this, IWC Spitfire Chrono (A watch I own personally), and the BB58 as watches that were following this faux vintage look trend.

    Very good discussion. The Railmaster is a watch that I (an Engineer) want to love. My brain loves it, but some how it never pulls at those heart strings! I should want one more than, say, a Tudor Black Bay model for so many reasons but alas I don't and it seems many don't.
    For the recreation, I think it would be great for Omega to use the current Seamaster 300 as a starting point. A more tool-like case with more brushed surfaces, dial numerals and markers calling back to the original 1957 but modernized - think like the Seamaster 300 available around when Spectre was released - and maintain the smooth bezel. I guess that means the broad arrow hands would be in order as well and perhaps a Titanium construction to differentiate from the Seamaster line, both Aquaterra and Divers.

    Some of the iterations are really beautiful but some are very ordinary. I know someone who has one, and wears it daily, all day, yet doesn’t even know it’s a Railmaster. It’s a question of identity. I’m interested in railways and railway matters, but don’t know why I should want one. In the olden days, I used the Tachymètre scale on my Speedy for train speeds.

    Discontinue and rebrand. The Seamaster for divers, Speedmaster for racers and thrill seekers, and then, the Fieldmaster.. 100m WR, keep it slim, no date, brushed case and bracelet, the go to for walkers, climbers and dare I say it, explorers.

  • @ColinLack
    @ColinLack 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

    My take on it? Use future generation Railmasters as a test bed for complications, different finishing techniques, generally different configurations. Don't market it under the Seamaster line going forward. I feel like that's a good reason as to why it gets lost. For example they could make the Railmaster the line where they explore the various dial styles Omega has done over the years. Ranging from Linen to Pie Pan. Add in a configuration with a moon phase and you have a quirky oddball dress watch that also has some tool-y vibes. Making it almost a perfect every day watch. I really think the Railmaster is akin to what the PlayStation Vita was for Sony. A product they have no idea how to market.

    • @ID-Guy
      @ID-Guy  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      It's a pity that the "Seamaster" name has to be attached to virtually everything. We can understand it from a marketing perspective, but you're right, it drowns (pun) everything it engulfs. Also the Aqua Terra... it seems like they've covered so much ground with this new generation (and styles) Begs the question how the Railmaster could be different. As a more historic inspired "timeline" piece? I like your thinking. Thank you for sharing this Colin! 🥃

    • @ColinLack
      @ColinLack 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@ID-Guy No problem. I feel like the Aqua Terra at least makes sense within the Seamaster line as it doesn't neatly fit anywhere else. Where as I'd say the Railmaster has a distinct enough design language to stand on its own. I would say the next generation needs to stand on its own.

    I have the black one. Very nice, looks rugged for a simple watch. Interesting dial, naiad lock and a cheap way to get a 8806 coaxial (at the close to half mrsp you can get them for, mrsp is too high) and not recognizable as a luxury piece. It is running near perfect, takes weeks to deviate one or two seconds. One gripe: don’t mind the fauxtina, like it actually. But the lume is under performing in strength compared to my tudor or the smp I had before.

    my ideal Railmaster 3.0, so to speak would be:
    - sword hands as in the 165.024
    - trapezoidal indices with 3, 6, 9, 12, matte black dial (similar to 42mm skyfall planet ocean)
    - lyre lug case with slight protrusion on the crown (act as a sort of crown guard, a very omega approach to crown guard, very aesthetic, organic, and well thought)
    - 39mm case
    - "Seamaster" script instead of "Railmaster" (inspired by the pakistan air force railmaster), perhaps in red?
    - white seconds hand, perhaps either spear tip or lolipop?
    now this would beat the hell out of the rolex explorer and air king!

    0854 AM here on the U.S. East Coast and the horology Sensei has again captured my interest. I am enamored with Omega, but I can't pull the trigger on any of them. The Railmaster gathered my attention with the 1957 trilogy. Yet, I found the watch case thickness not to my liking. I am also limited to purchasing a watch once in a 'Blue Moon'.
    What I would really like to see Omega do is engineer robust slimmer movements that would allow their case thicknesses to decrease. If Omega does that, they can truly impact the market.

    Just an update. It appears it's officially discontinued on Omega's websites. One of my local ADs also confirmed the discontinuation to me in person the other day. In fact, Omega had them send their stock back. I don't know why Omega asked for them back, but maybe somebody can explain that to me. Anyway, I hope it returns. I suspect it may be a bit before we see a replacement. There is a lot of potential for the line, but I'm not 100% confident Omega can realize that potential.

    Omega needs to get over the idea that every watch they make has to have the lyer lugs. It’s also interesting that this model got so little attention while the sea master 300 and sped master broad arrow got so many make overs, after they all got released as part of that set. If they had updated the dial on this watch to have the cut away/sandwich style that they gave the 300 and gave it different lugs, omega might have finally made a watch people want

    This watch popped into my consideration list for my big birthday in 2022. While I ended up getting an Explorer II instead, it's an underrated watch. That being said, there are a couple of things that I think could be improved. One is it's almost TOO brushed. It needs a bit of polish somewhere. Maybe it's the hands, maybe just a small surface on the case. While I am okay with the brown lume look, I would love to see a white lume version. I think it's a great size, and much like the Air King or the new Explorer 40mm, an odd watch out in the line versus the 38.5 or 41mm Aqua Terras. The fact that it's a Seamaster Railmaster makes for confusing marketing. I don't care if it's clearly derived from the AT line, it deserves its own collection choice on the Omega website. Even when one selects Seamaster, it's not one of the main options shown. I would like to see a new bracelet with a quick adjust clasp. The butterfly clasp on a tool watch just didn't sit right with me, and was the deal breaker. I think a new version should come with not only a better bracelet, but one of Omega's fantastic NATO straps. Either include a strap changing tool, or quick release on the bracelet. I would love to see the 8900 movement with "time zone function" jumping hour hand. Make it a stealth travel field watch.
    It's too bad I see Fieldmaster used on a few watches, because a Fieldmaster line could be created with a bit of Omega's military watch history infused into the design. Anyway, I just think this line deserves much better. On the plus side, they are a bargain on the used market, as noted. Maybe I'll pick one up at some point, depending on if Omega releases an update.

    I absolutely LOVE the Railmaster ‘57. It is my favourite Watch from the Trilogy collection. If I had the money I would buy one in a heartbeat.
    The contemporary Railmaster is a little bit of a mish mash I feel. Too many variations (the ‘denim’ dial with denim strap, what was that all about? It sounded like Omega were entering the fashion Watch arena), the brushed metal dial, pencil hands, the faux lume and that cross hair in the middle of the dial (hmm…).
    For the money they are currently going for on the secondary market they are brilliant value no doubt and to be honest with you, even though the current model is one I tend to overlook, it still draws me in when I see it. It has something about it. I guess I’m just a fan of the quarter Arabic numerals?
    I hope it isn’t discontinued. I want the SMP300m to be discontinued instead with a passion. That bezel, those skeleton hands, that wavy dial….. bin them! Let’s hope when the new Bond film is released Omega ditch it and develop a totally fresh Watch 🤞
    Another great video boet. Keep ‘em coming! ✊

    I own the same Railmaster in the thumbnail. It’s not my best watch in absolute terms. However, it’s a great watch nonetheless and perfect as a daily wear to a physical job where I’m around magnets. It’s relatively unassuming, gets the job done.
    Compared to a lot of Omega’s, it’s on the thinner end of their spectrum. I love the brushed surfaces. The lume color isn’t going g to be everyone’s cup of tea, but it’s simply another color. As for the movement, I’m not an accuracy weeny, the movement is fine, it’s not the most accurate watch I own, but within spec. My expectation is that it should excel in longevity and service intervals, shock resistance.
    The bottomline for me, it’s helped me stay on pattern of chasing g very good, but typically overlooked watches that can be bought for a decent value. I bought an A385 Revival and SBGW269 that hog the rest of my available wrist time. I find them to be better watches, but the Railmaster allows me to relax at work and simply forget about it. Omega has other tool watches, but I’m drawing a blank to come up with another three handed no date at a similar price. They need to continue to offer that kind of watch.
