Omega Railmaster - The Ultimate Master Toolwatch

  • The star of today’s review is the Omega Seamaster Railmaster Master Chronometer Ref ; 220.10.40.20.01.001, it’s the first entry level luxury watch that I’ve managed to hang onto, it’s an absolute stunner which may well be the ultimate tool watch.
I picked the Railmaster up earlier this year in the sales and saved more than a £1000 on the RRP, the review is long overdue as I’ve spent a lot of time with the watch and didn’t want to make a throw away video on it.
The review is an epic at more than 19 minutes, it covers the Railmaster’s history and its technical abilities. Given the feature length duration I may choose to do a cut down straight review, I will wait to see how well the review is received.
I gathered a lot of material for the review which is included under fair usage, I’m pretty sure Omega won’t mind. I will also attach a couple of links to some websites that you may like to take a look at and learn more about the original 1957 Omega Railmaster

This Railmaster is a beauty of design and engineering without the ostentatious bling of so many watches in this class. The features all seem so well thought out. So glad to see Omega has brought it back, hopefully to stay so we can add it to our collection

I bought this Railmaster last year. It’s easily the best watch in my collection, it’s easily my favorite best wearing watch. Initially I’d only wear the watch before and after work, why job is rather physical including running some machinery. After a few months I simply found myself wearing it to work. I may regret that somewhere down the road, but for now, all is good, it runs best actively worn in a daily basis though I believe that goes for my entire collection.
One thing about the Railmaster - in general, the brushing is often rather subtle, even absent such as direct, full light, it looks ink black, bottomless. It takes on grays, a touch of purple at times. The lume modulates in color a bit too though not to the degree of the dial. The hands being brushed, as the angle of light changes, so does your perception of the watch.
I will suggest that the lyre lugs look better with a strap if some kind, they get lost with the fitted end links. I’ve got the denim strap which is great though too short.
With respect to size, obviously it needs to fit the wearer. That aside, as an object, it really looks superbly balanced in a way that of all my watches it neither seems to wear large or small relative to its measurements - it simply looks right in terms of form.
I would out of curiosity like to try on a 38 Aqua Terra or 39mm Globemaster which uses a different case to see how they wear. I believe Omega has a good eye for watches this size and they should offer more.

I had a 39mm Rolex Explorer which I think it's a very similar watch, I wanted a Rolex so much that I didn't consider looking for another brand, but now I've being learning a little bit more about watches I'm convinced this Omega Railmaster is a much better option for the money, a no brainer. What a great review! Thanks very much for taking the time to put it together. As the proud owner of a blue SMP and a white dialed Aqua Terra, the black Railmaster always feels like a "logical" black dialed watch in my collection. It is a bit less flashy than the other two, has a distinct look and is very very wearable, unlike the Planet Ocean for instance.
Just one little remark. I believe the .10. in the reference number, refers to the bracelet and not the watch itself being stainless steel. Since the versions with a strap instead of a bracelet have a .12. in the reference number as the only difference.

I have one of these and also a Rolex Milgauss. I love both of these watches and they both do their jobs perfectly. However, my Railmaster had it’s first 2 years of wear on a railway construction project in the Middle East. It’s the perfect watch: not gaudy and in the face of those earning much less than me but not showing any of the many bumps that it has acquired so far. It has more sharp corners than the Milgauss but nothing that inconvenience you during normal daily wear. To date I haven’t damaged the anti-reflective coating on the glass either, a surprise as this is usually the first thing I scrape. It’s a great watch, just lookout for the cost of an Omega service as they tend to be expensive.

Fantastic review. However, it provides some inaccuracies regarding magnetic fields. Airport x-ray machines, microwaves and radar do not generate significant magnetic fields; they generate electromagnet radiation, which are wavelengths of light. (The word “electromagnetic” is misleading.). However, MRI machines, power plant generators, railroad diesel/generator locomotives and large electric motors produce LARGE magnetic fields. Airport security metal-detector “gateways” and “wands” also generate a small magnetic field to detect ferrous objects. The arch (gateway) metal detector one walks through at the airport is not an x-ray machine; it is a magnetic field that could affect simple watches. That’s why I put my watch in a tray through the x-ray machine, and do not wear it walking through the “arch” metal detector. My next watch will be the Seamaster Railmaster.

I thought you might be interested, curiosity got the better of me and I contacted a boutique and in turn Omega direct. Omega as expected said that it is discontinued, (approx 6/7 years ago). The reference 2806.52.37 is very old one. I think Omega are hesitant to clear discontinued items from their website, directing you to a boutique, obviously it's then the boutique's job to try and redirect something else to the customer. I experienced something similar as I was looking at the Speedmaster Ultraman pretty much knowing it was not available (although the salesperson didn't do a great job). Anyhow, I love my 49.2mm, it's fantastic statement piece. Be happy to for you to review it one day. Carry on the good work !
