      I assume it's extremely illegal, however it's actually cheaper for him to just pay the bill outright than take them to court over it... which is exactly what they're counting on. However, he found a way to keep it from happening again, to all branches of his business; also his extended family, apparently. That's about a 10/10 on the "Whoops Scale."

      It happens. Back when I had a reduction mammaplasty, I did everything necessary to make sure my insurance would cover it until they finally approved. Then I had my surgery, and months later got a notice from my insurance company that they were "investigating" the claim because they deemed it a "pre-existing condition".
      At around that time, the Affordable Care Act was passed and companies were prohibited from going after people like me who needed medical procedures for pre-existing conditions, so they stopped hounding me for it. Thanks, Obama!

    • @andykelp6008
      @andykelp6008 2 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      It likely isn't legal, but insurance companies will try to weasel out of paying whenever they can. It costs them no money to decline every claim (maybe costs good will, but if the claimant is powerless, they will weigh any loss of goodwill against tens of thousands of dollars (in this case) to pay the claim. I have seen many insurance companies not even take a claim seriously until a lawsuit is filed against them.

    • @afuzzycreature8387
      @afuzzycreature8387 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

People in the thread were asking me why I didn't ask for money up front, and to be honest, the thought of them stiffing me wasn't even in a possibility in my mind. The reason it jumped up to £7k was because I knew the installation from my old company was £8k, so asking for more than that would have made them look elsewhere. I'm glad you enjoyed the story.

    Don't mess with an Engineer.... After listening to this one I had to laugh. I did field service for a long time in the automation controls field. A competitor of the company I worked for had a machine that used our controls, not their own. Their machine went down and no matter what they did they couldn't get it to run. They didn't want to call us, a competitor, and tried working with the machine's builder in another city. They reloaded the program, changed out all of the controls hardware and still could not get the machine to run. So they bit the bullet and called us. I got the call and went to the site. When I got there the receptionist said "Oh they are waiting for you." and I signed in and was lead back to the machine. The building was silent as this machine produced what was needed for everything else and everyone else to work. The head of the company was standing there in his suit and started to bitch me out for them being down for two weeks. I replied you just called us and those two weeks are not our fault. I said I need an electrician and an operator. I had my computer on my shoulder and my jacket was still zipped up. I was lead back to the machine where I asked what was going on. They said the machine just won't run. So I asked the operator to try and make anything run on the machine. She started by pressing a button and told me a pump should have started. The electrician already had a computer hooked up to the machine, and a set of electrical prints. I asked him to show me the pump in the schematics, he did. From there I got an address to look up in the program, then asked the operator to press the button. Looking at the program everything needed was met accept one item. I searched back two steps to an input that was not on. I grabbed the prints, paged back to the input and saw what it was. Seven different things were wired to it and all seven needed to be made. So I asked for the first one, it was good, and so on. When I got to the last one, a switch, I found it and looked back at the contacts, they were open. The switch was the "Off - Run" selector switch. It was in the "Off" position .... for the last two weeks. I switched into "Run" and told the operator to try starting the machine. She pressed the Start button and the machine came to life churning out parts. The plant went silent as I was at the machine for about a minute. The VP motioned for the electrician to come over to him. I was standing at the machine, coat still on, and my computer still hanging off my shoulder, when the electrician came back and said the VP was embarrassed and asked for me to go. As I was walking back out I had to pass him and all the big wigs. He then asked me what I did. I replied "I just turned the machine on". I was back at the receptionist signing out 5 minutes after walking in the building. The customer got a 4 hour minimum bill. That one always makes me laugh.

    i remember there was a kind of a similar enough story that made the news in my country...
    there was a bussinessman that was abducted for something like 20-40 days and the news made his name popular. And there was a second pretty huge CEO with a very similar family name (like a single extra letter, that is fully pronounced though, so the two names cna be easily ddifferentiated)
    so two of the CEOs truck drivers get into an accident in some internal shop transfer of something and their insurance denies them coverage because they are insured only for client deliveries or some bulshit of that sort, and whilst the vehicle damages where probably something like 10k, the medical bill of one of the guy to not lose his arm went into half a million (he either had to be transported to another country for surgery or a team had to be rbought in or sth costly that i do not remember).
    anyways the insurance does not accept to pay and the big very popular company's (in the country) name isnt the one that is visible, it is some generic transport and logistics name that is like a subsidiary and nobody knows.
    apparently the CEO tries to get it solved through legal, financial or whatever else and he fails. he then goes in person and they tell him "oh, because you are famous you think you can come here and buly us into making half a million in payments? go f* yourself" and kick him out.
    that was the point he got a news crew involved to wire him with a hidden camera for his next visit. (htere were some middle points that i do not remember)
    he goes in wired and tells them "do you know who i am?" and they say they do, because his family name is well known... etc..
    and they again tell him that they are kicking him out. he call in his laywer who apparrently has prepared a big lawsuit for breach of contract, because apparently they didn't have a good enough reason to deny the payment.
    And then the lawyer starts pulling out lawsuit after lawsuit from all the other companies that operate under the same mama-company of no-trust in the services due to proven ineffectiveness they start going crazy.
    Next day the insurance company EU CEO is sent to the country because they suddenly realise that its not the "famous" bussinessman who probably has like 30 or 50 emplyees, but its the other one. The guy that has the biggest toy megastores in the country, that has expanded that to like another 10 countries and te corporate offices are in this country, with so so many delivery and logistic companies and port and rail and so many other connected companies... Only the toy chain emplayes like 2500 people, but all together he has approximately 36000 people insured, and over 1000 vehicles, and over 200 propertie insured with them. apparently the hit from just loosing them as a client was forcing the isnureance branch in our conuntry to close down, but the lawsuit which was asking for all the active contracts to be refunded, and some fines and so many other things, made a top 15 european insurance (or at least i think they were this big) to pull out of 20% of europe to cut its losses.
    and then the CEO went on some media tour to bash them even more...

    That first story made me angry. Legally, an insurance company cannot approve a procedure and then change the rules and deny it after it has happened. That is fraud and they could have been sued into oblivion. Can't believe she had to pay for the surgery herself. That is completely illegal.

    The first story reminded me of something I learned about Jim Henson, from back when he was shooting the first Muppet Show.
    His friend and one of the founding members of the muppet’s Jerry Nelson was having a problem with their insurance provider.
    Jerry’s daughter Christine had cystic fibrosis, and after years of treatments, he’d been informed by their provider that they would no longer cover her.
    Jim wouldn’t stand for that and changed providers for his entire company.
    When Jerry tried to thank him, Jim just kind of shrugged and said “That’s what insurance companies are for”.
    He also granted a wish for Christine, who had wanted to be an actress. You can see her in a scene with her dad in The Great Muppet Caper, where the two are walking in the park together.

    Second story: I can tell even one self can install a TV system. I did the one at my home by myself. All you need is an aerial, as much coaxial cable you think you'll need, a knife, some heads for the cable and you just put everything together, if your TV is digital you don't need a digital box, which isn't hard to install either.

    Honestly, even if OP dealing with that insurance company was a small business with no other connections he could still have ruined their day.
    If he got what was said here in writing I imagine an e-mail or two is all that would be required to convince the "big customers" not to work with an insurance company that can and will choose to retroactively change their contract to just not pay out a claim whenever is convenient for them without even informing their customers... I imagine in pretty much any country, taking this issue to court would get you this statement in writing allowing you to send those e-mails and a payout (at minimum cost of the treatment).

  • @ReverieNightengale

    That first story is *exactly* why I never buy into the "people love their insurance and they love their freedom!" argument against M4A. Literally NO ONE loves their insurance. No one, no matter how many politicians and insurance companies will tell you that you do. You don't love your insurance. What you'd love is to have medical needs like that employee actually covered, without having the rug pulled out from under you months later when the company decides they don't feel like covering the costs for the insurance that you already pay way too much for.
    If anyone tries to tell you that people love their insurance and love having the "freedom" to choose which insurance plan will HOPEFULLY screw them over the least... don't. It's a scam and cases like that story show you why - you don't love your insurance and your insurance doesn't give a toss about you.
    So glad that OP mercilessly tore them down, the world is better off with one less greedy company ruining people's lives. We'd be better off if all medical insurance companies went the way of the dodo and we just adapted to a universal healthcare system.

    Got travel insurance with ok rates (this was a condition of my visa in the US). Got sick, submitted a claim. The bill comes back 4 times higher. After 8 (!!!) months of back and forth with disgustingly rude customer service, after involving the Attorney General in my state, I finally got an answer of why: they had an addenda to their contract, which was AN ENTIRE CONTRACT BUT WITH DIFFERENT NUMBERS. Of course, they failed to mention the addenda when we were discussing the rates. How on Earth is this legal? In the end, I had to pay only two times the amount, not four, "as a courtesy".
    I lived in Russia for 20 years. The US insurance company called IMG Global is officially, by a huge margine, the worse organization I've ever had a displeasure of dealing with.
