I was never a "High Speed" soldier. But I think cheap, Gen 0 and Gen 1 NVD might be okay for defending some fixed, permanent position, especially if it's all you can afford.
You could surround the place with IR floodlighting pointed outward. Assuming that an aggressor already knows you're there.
I don't know about any commercially made units already, but I plan to experiment with some homemade motion-detection lights with IR lamps, positioned on likely avenues of approach. I would think those would catch a defender's attention at night, observing through even cheap NVDs.
An easy way too would be to put up trail cameras with built-in IR flash, but an observer would be more likely to not notice the flash, compared to something that stays lit longer.
At any rate, someone sneaking up on you with NVDs would think they've been busted and lost their element of surprise.

luckily we have pvs 69s now which we did at the time this video was uploaded to, but they were very unknown and they still pretty are. but if you build them yourself, you can get three digital zero latency and I guess they’re not G3 but they’re not G2 plus because they work all the way until about half moon and if you’re in like a very forest woods then they probably wouldn’t work too well but if you have full moon then you’re gonna probably be fine quarter moon in dead forest you probably be pretty rough but half moon at dead forest you’ll be fine. Guys make housings for them and they’ve came out with so many ideas for O-rings and stuff, and you can get yourself a pair for about 600 for a bridge set. About 300 for a monocular and they did come out with a file for it but you have to have a 3-D printer or know someone he sells the housing for the bridge set up but it’s 200 other people sell it but you should help him out since he came out with us and pretty much helped everyone get pretty much g3 nvg for cheap. few hours of work

ive got one and honestly the performance is god awful. i can see better with my eyes most of the time than with these with no IR. used them on a full moon night and the image is just a fuzzy mess since the sensor on the Night Eagle 3 v2 camera isnt very good. not much data it can pick up without an IR light.
that said, with an IR light it work very well. i got a cheap 20 dollar IR light on amazon and stuck it to my helmet and works amazing.
Something like the NVG30 form BINOCK you can get for 350 or get scammed by Goodnightgear and pay 500. These have a very good sensor in them that can actually get some good image data at low light conditions. But i think they do have a little more latency than the pvs 69.

It's worth pointing out to your audience that there are technically two types of infrared goggles...
IR illuminated goggles that emit infrared like the cheap Chinese scope in this video, these are vastly inferior to ambient light NV. But then there are...
Thermal infrared goggles that emit nothing, require zero lighting, detect people behind cover, and are vastly superior to ambient NV in every way. And if your ambient goggles give off even the tiniest smidgeon of heat it will be the person wearing TI goggles that spot you from a mile away, along with the rest of your body through whatever light covering you're hiding behind.

    • @Tattlebot
      @Tattlebot 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

Different roles. Reflective NVGs are fast and equal to the eye in resolution. Emissive IR sensors have major limitations. Things have changed, yes; the LWIR camera will usually detect a target at 500m. With a magnifying optic the NVG will afterward able to identify what it is. You also can't move over terrain or drive with LWIR. There are other options for static observation. Motion extraction with a powerful multistage image intensifier digital scope can provide unbelievable results.

Theyre probably sitting there right now like: "teehee the first TRICK is to find me TEEHEE" yeah we know..Parents basement...YAWN, What I will say about the 33China unit on a cursory glance is it seems to do a pretty decent job of ambient light pickup without the IR like a sionyx but the eye relief is a bit far out there and the screen is microscopic. But on a cursory glance im impressed by that sensors ability to pick up on ambient light. Considering REAL use case is probably more trying to navigate a car trail or boat at night rather than being super sneaky in absolute darkness in your moms basements. Im seeing alot more hikers with flashlights than these sneeki breekis. But I guess theyre just WAY too good for me..PFFFF. You cant even give these guys trash. they just spent 8k on a REAL unit. I pulled the trigger on a cheap snap-on IR hunting scope but have been wondering about the IR monoculars that look like binoculars. On most those, the IR light is over the left eye and the camera is in front of the right eye, so it might line up pretty good with the scope when doing a cheek weld if you could mannage to strap that to your face somehow.

@wick actual I used the Starlite scope when I was in the service about 50 yrs ago,the quality was pretty poor ,but you could see movement out to 500 meters or so but the clarity was to poor to make out friendly or not,we had to call command before calling in fire from the Navy,we were near the south China sea ,but it was a free fire zone and it was my discretion to light them up or not,the US Navy were very accurate with those 16 inch guns that got my small team a lot of confirmed kills. But that was a long time ago.

@@wctyre49 I believe a starlight scope was a Generation 1 device and those absolutely still have usability today. The market for them shrunk massively in the past few years but it's still possible to obtain the technology here in America but a lot of the devices contain intensifier tubes from Russia such as the EP-33.
Even though I haven't used the original or military spec devices I can say that what you are saying is very close to what I experience. Generation 1 is around 10-30% better than your own eyes at darkness perception but the weakness is in the fact that even though you can detect silhouettes and movement easier than your own eyesight, there is a lack of clarity to the point where it's not a good identification device because of the muddiness of the final visual. This can be greatly changed based on your optical magnification. An example is that my set of 1x Goggles cannot identify people beyond 40 yards although I can easily make out the movement and the silhouette at almost double at that distance. The 2x monocular I own can identify out a little farther at around 50-60 yards but you lose the wider field of view of the 1x device. Also these numbers are given under quite poor conditions such as when you are in heavy overcast with little to no moon and in an open area with little foliage.
I don't know if you ever used these devices on land but I found the biggest failure of Gen 1 devices is heavy foliage woods. Even when the moon is 50% or greater the heavily wooded environments can often force you to use active IR in order to navigate because passive use won't allow you to even make out shapes/silhouettes well beyond even 10-20 yards. Essentially your own eye's natural night vision actually can beat the device's performance in the woods without active IR.
I still enjoy the technology a lot because they are vastly cheaper within $130-$700 and the life span has about doubled from starlight scopes. I believe the original mean time to failure/MTTF was around 500 hours. With the Gen1+ tubes that has been pushed to 1000-1500 hours so you get more for your money than before.
