  • One of the most dangerous manouvers on the road is overtaking. The often high speeds involved and the potential of facing on coming traffic means this procedure needs to be done with extreme caution. This film show you how as well as tips on how to behave when being overtaken by others. Made by Film Australia 1973. Directed by Peter Johnson.

      Great films.
      I recognise so much of the areas filmed, even Carlotta Street, Gordon in one as it closes, from 50 or more years ago.
      Please let me know the very first one and how many series, and how many in total so I can watch them all.
      Cheers..

    One point I'd add, is how I overtake on country highways. NEVER get right up behind the slower car, waiting for the chance to pass them. Sit well back, as it gives you a much further view of the oncoming traffic lane. That also allows you to, when the road ahead is clear, accelerate behind the other car, before pulling out, you spend less time on the wrong side of the road, trying to get your speed up.

    Great stuff, some drivers out there seem to treat our roads like race tracks, every day we seem to have some drivers that behave like lunatics here in Broken Hill. Our roads are for everyone to drive on but some drivers know just about nothing. I’ll never understand some other drivers sometimes.

    When overtaking, drop down to third to get the revs up and floor it. Skilful overtaking means spending as little time in the oncoming lane as possible.

    Great video for summer driving. In icy winter road conditions the techniques must be different. If a car swerved into oncoming in front of you he is probably headed off the road into the ditch so best head into the oncoming lane yourself to avoid him

    Good points to be aware of. I've tried overtaking other cars. It's not easy, and can be very dangerous. If no one else is in the oncoming lane and it's safe to pass, I make sure the driver knows that I'm planning to pass.

    Everyone gets taught this in their driving lessons and it's told in the highway code. Unfortunately, it all goes out the widow when they pass.
    Common sense.

    • @brianocampo7981
      @brianocampo7981 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not in Australia. We don't have the equivalent of the Highway Code much of which is sensible defensive driving advice. We only have state codes full of MUST and MUST NOT statements.

    I live in a country where weaving and hogging the overtake lane (whilst driving much slower than traffic) is common practise (the police nearly as much as anyone)... I let the weavers past, but am often forced to do it myself as the safest option. If I just sit behind the hogger and hope they move (unlikely as people don't have much concept of overtake lane!) I'll effectively be hogging myself, but if I back off, and continue driving slowly in the normal lane I'm making it even more dangerous since the hogger is even more unlikely to register that I don't want to overtake them blind, and other overtaking vehicles will weave infront of me, AND overtake the hogger blindly! I'm also reluctant to flash the hogger (keep it out of the gutter), for fears of spooking them (read very distracted drivers), quite apart from it being illegal! Gotta adapt I guess :p

    Checking the blind spot that way while maneuvering is the most dangerous step which should be skipped, taking your concentration away from the road may put you in a risky situation.

    Irresponsible overtaking is the cause of most fatalities on the roads ..people seem to forget that they are driving a lethal weapon.if you are overtaking you are on the wrong side of the road and are completely in the wrong in the event of an accident

      jason ichigo Or just in general fat lazy slobs. Lots of new young drivers are also just opting for auto because it's easier, probably so they can play on their phones while they drive... Not looking like a very good future for manuals if the newer generations don't like them they will be eradicated.

    Not to mention common sense. If you can't see the car ahead of the car in front of you, don't try to overtake him. Look ahead of the driver if you can, and wait until it's safe to manoeuvre.

    Any driver who doesn't use convex mirrors has little interest in road safety.

  • @stel1000
    @stel1000 ปีที่แล้ว

    2:11 I don’t think it was the fault of the driver that was on his lane going straight . It was most surely the fault of the overtaker and it is like that usually because they want to go over the speed limit and that’s why they overtake , and they even do it with double line between the lanes. So when i am the driver going on my lane I also speed up and block the overtake. Is that unsafe? Yes. But I won’t let others break the law and slow me down cause they wanna be the first ones to reach the next red light.

    • @Kain987
      @Kain987 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@tivet4 when preparing to overtake, it's safer to start accelerating before actually leaving your lane. The more speed you're carrying when leaving your lane, the faster you can return to it.
      Leaving your lane at the same speed as the vehicle in front maximizes the time spent staring down oncoming traffic. If the jackass you're overtaking is accelerating as well... It's a recipe for disaster.
