    In Washington State, there is no speed limit when passing a vehicle going under the speed limit on a 2-lane road as long as the pass is done safely and only on the broken yellow line. It is also illegal to have at least 5 vehicles backed up and MUST pull over to let the traffic pass.

      It's illegal to have 5 vehicles backed up?? That's awesome. I hate having to over take 2 cars at once on a broken yellow line since the 2nd car refuses to pass and the first car driving like an idiot and brake checking below the speed limit.

    No one actually follow that passing rule with speed. People will always go 10-20 km/t faster then the speed limit.

    If anyone ever speeds up when I'm passing them in a broken yellow line, I'm gonna drive them off the road because I'm not letting someone kill me because they were driving too slow or constantly changing speeds.

    Wait, I am confused.
    Wouldn't changing to the farthest-left lane on a multi-lane street, to bypass a slow vehicle, also be called 'passing' ?
    DMV manual says that the left lane, commonly called 'lane 1,' is generally designated for passing: "To drive faster, pass, or turn left, use the left lane" (p. 45 in 2018 ed).
    But if you were referring to 'changing to the lane with opposing direction traffic,' then yes, I see why it is illegal.
    (although I'm not sure why someone would cross over the dividing island...)

    • @user-fn1vm4wp1w
      @user-fn1vm4wp1w 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Also not sure if 'paved' is equivalent to 'main-traveled road' (which is listed in p. 46 of the 2018 ed): "The edge of the main-traveled portion of the road may have a painted white line on the road's surface"
      Although it is also said to "[n]ever drive off the paved [ _or_ ] main-traveled portion of the road ... to pass" (p. 65 of the 2018 ed). I suppose that means the same.

    • @jeffatturbofish
      @jeffatturbofish 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      As he safely should do so. Passing while driving the speed limit is actually unsafe. It will place you too long in the other lane risking both yourself and the vehicles coming from the other direction. Best advice: look to see if there isn't another car coming from the other direction while making sure that the lanes display that it is safe, punch it, pass the other vehicle and then go back to the proper lane. Less time in the other lane, the better.

    • @elainenelson4332
      @elainenelson4332 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jeffatturbofish yep, I agree with everything you said. And perfect example about how it’s unsafe to pass going through speed limit on Monday I was riding with my uncle and this girl in front of us wasn’t keeping a consistent speed, she would be going 40 then speed up to 55 then slow down. He went to pass her while she was doing 40 and he was going 60 passing her and all the sudden when we were beside her she sped up to 65 so my uncle had to speed up to keep going by her and so then we were in the left lane for much longer. Wasn’t really a safe situation and of course her speeding up pissed off my uncle so he then proceeded to brake check her a little and drive slow

    approximately 2:15 you said that it's against the law to speed when passing.
    This is absolutely not true your instructions are great and very much appreciated but this one detail is not true. The term, the legal term is "safe and prudent"
    it is not safe or prudent to pass without significant speed. the law specifies to pass with significant speed. Passing a car has an inherent danger to it and the longer you're passing the longer that danger exist. Passing 50MPH traffic in a 55 Zone it is perfectly legal to go 70 during the extent of the pass and this is written into the law.
    You will find a description in your state law regarding passing speeds.
    it is illegal to pass with insufficient speed and I have been ticketed for this.
    In 1984 in Georgia passing a vehicle on a long stretch I was charged with passing without sufficient speed I was going approximately 55 in a 45 Zone and was charged with "passing without sufficient speed creating a dangerous situation"
    is how it was written on my ticket. I went to court and was schooled by the judge

      subzero9024 it is very very important that in your learning how to drive, that you do not listen to idiots on the internet.
      This is not the place to learn the rules of driving. if you would like to take my advice whatever advice I give you, go verify it!!! !!
      Do not trust me or anyone else. Whatever good healthy information you're givin, go verify it. If you want to learn how to drive properly then take driving lessons.
      I don't mean go down to your local Hertz driving class and take a how to get your drivers license lesson. I mean after you have your driver's license take further driving lesson.
      I have had my safe and cautious father inform me inappropriately how to drive. He is giving me very very unsafe advice such as try to get in one lane and stay there rather than teaching me how to drive for the conditions that exist at the moment. I have won bets with police officers regarding lane usage because they enforce the law they're not attorneys they do not know the law. The safest best advice that you could ever get for driving as always drive faster than traffic to your right always drive slower than traffic to your left and always signal for what you're going to do rather than signaling for what you've already started doing. And remember your turn signals indicate what you have already decided you're going to do, do not use a turn signal to ask permission. Don't tailgate and do not impede faster traffic. Drive on the right and do your passing to the left then return to the right. That's almost everything that you need to know about driving.

    • @rylencason4420
      @rylencason4420 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That is true. The posted speed limit is for the main travel on the road, but a good rule of thumb is that you should stick to 15 mph. maximum above the speed limit when passing. You don't want to go any faster than that, because you have less control of your vehicle and the road when you do that.

    • @pacovasda5955
      @pacovasda5955 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Rylen Cason that sounds reasonable. I mean you have to consider what the conditions are at the moment and if you have to go faster even much faster then your have to.
      but I think for the most part 15 is faster than needed in many many cases.
      As well you must consider what is the safest thing for the conditions. If traffic is going the speed limit, is there really that much reason to pass? unless you're on a very very very long road where people are not obeying the speed limit and traffic is piling up behind you creating a further different dangerous situation, then the speed limit might not be appropriate but for the most part the speed limit is appropriate and because of that when passing you shouldn't have to go too much past the speed limit when passing a "slower" vehicle because they should be going slower if they need to be passed.
      that should be the point. You should only be passing people that are going slower.
      so you shouldn't have to go too fast when you do pass.
      but limit that time in the dangerous oncoming lane.
      limit that time you spend in the dangerous oncoming lane.
      limit that time in the dangerous oncoming lane. Consider human nature that when you pass people tend to speed up rather than slow down or let you continue so be prepared appropriately to spend less time in the dangerous oncoming lane. And know hopefully you shouldn't have to go too fast to do it,
      just be prepared to if need be and that's usually done much better by building up speed before getting into the oncoming lane Because unless you have a supercar do as the safety classes suggest and build up your speed first or do not pass.

    • @rylencason4420
      @rylencason4420 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Okay. I see how there is not much of a reason to pass when vehicles are going at or above the speed limit. I probably should have said the person who you are trying to pass. On interstate highways in Texas, people usually go in between 75- 90 mph. when passing in the left lane, which is similar to this, but putting more thought into it.

    • @mattmurphy8942
      @mattmurphy8942 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This is true if you find yourself in a dangerous situation and the only way of maintaining safety is to speed. Either way it’s still illegal, you should only pass if it can be done safely.
      Edit: I guess this is only the law in some states. In my state it’s illegal.
      Hope I don’t get woooshed. Lol

    There is no law anywhere to my knowledge that states you cannot pass another vehicle on a multi lane road. It is more safe to pass on a multi lane road than a two lane road. Because of oncoming. You obviously do not know the laws of the road. There’s a difference in what you shouldn’t do and what’s legal. Driving on a gravel shoulder is no more illegal than driving on a paved one. I don’t even think it’s legal to pass on the right like you shown if you have to go on the shoulder paved or not...
    Please refrain from miseducating new drivers.

    • @Tylnorton
      @Tylnorton 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Passing on a multi lane road is very legal. Most of the time the left lane is designed for passing. And if it's not legal, it's not gonna be illegal since there are too many slow drivers.
