    40 years and what's covered is still useful information. Sad that a lot of drivers refuse to follow these basic guidelines today.

    Thank you i've been driving for 3 years now already.. and I watched all these videos right before I started to drive in 2013 i was just 15 y.o (lol). thankfully I haven't gotten into accidents only minor like scratches.. I wanted to thank you for uploading this even though the video is old it is still very effective.. One of the best quotes i heard in these videos " luck is not enough wherever we go we must keep defensive driving formula in mind."

    This is far more engaging and informative than the Driver's Educational films they showed us in the mid 2000's here in Canada, and 1/3 the length!

    Extraordinary wisdom. It would be worthwhile airing a shortened version of this on television today because too many drivers in Australia are either ignorant or too lazy to follow these basic rules.

    5:50 - I think I saw one of those old-style "GO BACK" signs in Wollongong about 16 years ago (long after the current design came into play).

    Most scenes in this episode were filmed on what is now the Pacific Motorway in Woolloongabba, Brisbane. Even shows the Captain Cook Bridge in the wet weather scene.

    The worst drivers speed up when they see someone indicate to merge so that they can make it more difficult for the person to merge. When it comes to these people, it would actually be safer not to indicate at all when merging.

    The world's most popular freeway policing is the California Highway Patrol.
    Australia's freeway system resembles that of California's.

    Now we're getting into the more challenging driving. Up until now, we've been dealing with surface streets and slower roads. Now we're going faster, usually over 60mph (97 kilometres per hour). This should be interesting.

  • @AidanWinch

    It should be compulsory for everyone to watch videos like these before getting a license. I live in Auckland and no one seems to understand merging or highway etiquette.

    It's possible. :) I hope you find some more safety videos to post. Although these are Australian safety videos, the rules are the same as those here in the USA.

    3:18 these days tailgating this close can be deemed as furious driving and can attract criminal charges to the driver. Falls into a category of road rage.

    What better way to end the series than with Freeway Driving? Hopefully, though, there will be other safe driving videos to post. Although driving in Australia and driving in North America, particularly the USA and Canada, may seem different, because they drive on opposite sides of the road, they both require you to pay attention, to drive according to the speed limit, to not drive after drinking alcoholic beverages, and drive like your life depends on it.

    Obviously Australia hadn't yet switched to metric when this film was made, since the speed limit signs and the car speedometers are still using miles.
    Also obviously, the section of freeway where nearly all of this was filmed (with the Cornwall Street exit sign visible repeatedly) must not have been open yet - or they were able to close it for filming.

    • @saxongreen78
      @saxongreen78 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      1973 was the year we officially went Metric...took a while to roll out, though.

    • @gde1989

      The Freeway only opened in 1974, so it was most likely filmed before it was opened

    • @roydidlock1012
      @roydidlock1012 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This was the first section of what was then the South East Freeway opened in 1973 and it appears it was still unopened at time of filming.In the 45 years since,this section has been so heavily rebuilt with six lanes,noise barriers and the busway it is unrecognizable today
