- I saw a preview of Samskara while I was at Madras and I was deeply impressed by" its implications, not only as a work of art, but what seems to me to be a complete breakaway from the safe, conventional forms of Indian film-making. This is a film that will be seriously considered by all committed film-makers throughout the world and will be acknowledged as representing the best in Indian cinema.
Samskara is a courageous film. It takes for its theme the concept of the brahmin elite and it dares to question it. But in doing so, it is careful never to demolish. Men, like great ideas, have weaknesses and it is the acknowledgement of man's fallibility that endows him with dignity and compassion. The brahmin concept is only the spring-board of the film. From it emerges a theme of utter universality, that of a man who comes to question his own motives, his own piety. It is the story of man's self-doubt and a nagging sense of responsibility. Samskara is a film that reaches out, that goes beyond the confines of its own particular theme, and its sensitive treatment forces an universal application.
With all this, it is difficult to understand why the film was banned. By Western standards, there is nothing in the film that would possibly give offense; and if, by Indian standards, its ethics are questionable, then this is indeed a very sad reflection on Indian standards of morality. I can make no direct comparison in the English scene. The nearest similarity, I suppose, is our treatment of Churchill both in literature and film. It was only when the film-makers and the writers gently suggested that our idol had feet of clay that Churchill achieved that extra dimension of humanity.
If anything can give dignity to the Indian way of life and thought it is a film like Samskara. It is a film of which India should be very proud. It is without doubt a festival film and, as such, would contribute greatly to India's status in the film-making industry. India cannot afford to censor such a film. The backlash from the rest of the world, apart from its people, could be painful and humiliating. The Board of Censors, in passing such a film, would show the same quality of courage and imagination that the film makers have shown in making it.

I'm a student of English literature... Samskara is best novel...now it comes to me that it is too a superb film..... Outstanding acting of Girish Karnard who played the role of Swami's father in R K Narayan's Malgudi Days.....I have read his two novels Hayavadana and Tughlaq.... great author as well as great actor

యూ ఆర్ అనంతమూర్తి గారు బ్రాహ్మణ వ్యతిరేకి అయినా, ఆయన పుట్టుక బ్రాహ్మణ కుటుంబంలోనే జరిగింది కాబట్టి సంస్కార నవలని అంత సమర్థవంతంగా రాయగలిగారు. నిస్సందేహంగా నవలకు ఏ మాత్రం తీసిపోని చిత్రం ఇది.
Snehalatha Reddy , Chandri of this movie was the first victim of emergency of Indira gandhi. A social activist too, a Lohiyait, Smt Reddy was arrested under Baroda dynamite case , and imprisoned with out charges for 8 months in jail ,tortured, for her association with George Fernandez , finally released when she was dying . She died on jan 24th 1977. Wiki pedia has a detailed ac of that famous episode.
It's a shame not many know about this gem here in Karnataka.

One of the best movies of Indian cinema! Great acting by Girish Karnad & others. Direction by Shri Pattabhirama Reddy is superb! By the way, if the Kannada movie, "Shrungara Masa" by the same director is there, please do upload. There is one superb song in that movie ("Banthido Shrungara Maasa ..." by Vani Jayaram and I want to watch the video song for that. Hence, the request :-)) Appreciate it. Thanks!

it is a powerful movie. but i think the ethics of how it was made is questionable. there was a lot of misleading and misdirection involved in making this. in contrast, the book is more thought provocative and more nuance.
I didn't understand what was misleading and misdirection? I feel the film Is self realisation that you don't need a religion/cast/customs to be a human. More you are religious more you are inhumane in behaviour.

Well that was one view of the society. I acknowledge the incidents depicted in the movie might not be fictitious !!! Humans are born with weakness and lapses. So that was it. We look back, analise, review criticise; with conscience we align and correct ourselves as we respect and bow down to our religion.
If the movie was a plain story of a religious brahmin community with authentic incidents that could have been a documentary.

it is a movie made by a eco system which hate Brahminism in particular and Hinduism in general. I being a brahmin have never seen in the society/community this kind of bad practices by any single person/that too a community leader (the main character of this story acted by Giresh Karnad) .. from where URA got this imagination of hypothetically hypothetical story .
The ecosystem was so beautifully established for past several decades that Brahmins are the people who liked this and awarded this more than anybody else!

Maybe unfortunately ur ananthmurthy had some psycho issues developed from his childhood and ended up writing only prejudiced, society breaking stories like this...
