It was a thrill to go to Skegness in the 1960s for a holiday, so clean and vibrant, so much to do and see, loved the fireworks on the boating lake, mega dump now.

@@funfactsforeverUKthere most certainly has been development but there is a long way to go. I was in town on Saturday and had a walk down chip pan alley and that was a depressing experience. Lumley Road hasn’t changed much looking at these pictures. Hopefully millers group get on with the extension of the pier something that’s been in the pipeline for years. We also need some development with the lights on the front. We have them shining every September to January (sometimes feb depending on when the council takes them down) and nobody see’s them as they don’t advertise them and there up when nobody comes down. Seems pointless. We need to enhance the lights and make it an event like Blackpool. Skeg has so much potential.

One time, when I was 10, I was in a pool on the beach and stood on the end of around a foot of barbed wire that went into the bottom of my heel and out through the back. Luckily, my dad was an ambulance man so he managed to remove the wire and strap up my foot with gauze and bandages. The car park was flooded that day so Dad had parked on the road. Almost all of the country is the same, everything gone down hill from our towns and cities to the size of chocolate bars and the constant bleating its for your safety. The people have lost pride in their appearance and none of this is by chance. If you have little pride in yourself and expect less then you are more maleble. I was there as a boy in Skeggy and it was a nice place to be, its scandalous what they have let Britain become.

Skegness has record visitor economy. Seaside tourism, in general, is bigger than ever but Skegness is one of the resort's notable for its success in the sector.
I also can't agree with you when you say people have lost pride in their appearance: the complete opposite has happened. How do you explain all the surgical procedures women have and the hair extensions and girls being so skinny now and men practically living in gyms, fixated with their bodies and wanting to be bigger?

In what way did rot set in after the '90s? It has record tourism industry and old things have been preserved. Remaining a classic resort with longer-standing attractions, complemented by new ones, and not having undergone redevelopments is behind Skegness's success.

@@TransportNostalgia You have a point about the pier frontage - but the pavilion that replaced it, back in 1971, looks fine.
The North Parade hasn't changed much. The Arnold Palmer Putting Courses are going strong - they were lost in a lot of resorts some time after Arnold Palmer's Leisure Division, in the UK, was closed and they either fell into the wrong hands of poor owners or, in the odd case, were victim of council redevelopment schemes. They hold more historical significance than is realised; people don't think.
The South Promenade, when you walk along that road, is the desolate part at the moment but it had Britain's first crazy golf, from 1927, until a few years ago. I think it's a shame the Lakeside Tearooms closed - and the model village.

There's some great shots here and the idea is fab. However what on earth was that music all about. Who had died. Skeggy is a fun, happy vibrant cheap and cheerful place to have a fantastic upbeat time. Why not a funky commentary. Sorry but I could only stand watching about 17 secs before I felt the need to go jump off the end of the pier, which wouldn't take me long to get there as bits have been chopped off over the years - fun fact to include?

I just thought that the actual footage was so good that if you could have put some "jaunty" style music on it with a bit of pithy commentary it could have been a really fab piece of work. perhaps even a little in the style of the old seaside postcards as it is the seaside and a bit more light hearted. I take on board some of your other comments about the town going downhill and not the same etc but that is the same pretty much everywhere but we all just have to make the best of it.
