I went to the local college for evening classes to learn how to plaster, 12 weeks, twice a week, 3 hours per session. First session was pretty much dedicated to taking mix off the spot board, onto the hand board, moving it around and off and onto the trowel. Session two was exactly what you’ve shown in this video. We used a similar mix with lime in for weeks, rendering the block walls, scraping it off onto a pile on the floor and starting again 😂 We then moved onto boarding, beading and skimming with multi-finish. I thoroughly enjoyed the whole process and can just about skim a wall 😉

Your continued passion to demonstrate simple and effective plastering concepts and tips to all abilities is fully appreciated and acknowledged!!!
    A) In this clip, you mentioned the ‘training’ mix can be applied and subsequently removed from plasterboard. Do you think there is a limit to the number of repeated applications to such boards ( unlike brick or masonry substrates that don’t degrade)?
    B) Presumably, the mix can likewise be used to train on ceilings too which are more challenging?
Many thanks again for promoting the craft and providing accessibility to everyone who wants to learn.

Colleges do use this but it's LSM, a mixture of lime and sand with the lime being the plasticiser. This is used for training for all levels. It never sets, just dries out. It's then knocked back off and put back in a roller pan mixer, water added and used again.
Great vid by the way, as always!

kirk, when i did my one day a week at the building college in south east London back in the 1980's the apprentice brickies used a mix of sand lime water and washing up liquid (think plasticiser was too pricey) as apprentice plasterers we had to scratch coat the wall in this mix before floating with sand and cement so that the wall could be scraped off after and be used by the next bloke,,,, the walls and mock up rooms got more complicated in design with bays, angles, columns etc as you progressed through the apprenticeship... i really looked forward to college days as it was a day off from being shouted at 🤣🤣

  • @rammedeartheu

An alternative mix is one part clay to 3 parts sand. The mix doesn't set, it has to dry which gives plenty of time to play around with it. The advantage of it is that when you have it mastered you are a clay plasterer, which has a lot of advantages over gypsum...

JUST PUT ENOUGH WATER TO HOLD TOGETHER
    BUT IT'S NOT MIXED
THEN ADD THE WASHING UP LIQUID
TO MIXTURE SO IT'S NICE AND SOFT I DO THE SAME WHEN MIXING MORTOR FOR FLAGGING AND BRICKS PLUS POINTING UP
AND GIVES PLENTY OF TIME TO DO IT
