- I BROKE ALL THE RULES AND PLASTERED A WALL WITH THIS BUDGET TROWEL
I got the cheapest trowel on amazon and wanted to see if i could do a nice job.
i gave myself one day to wear the trowel in.
i wanted to see a DIY enthusiasts first hand perspective on weather plastering to a good standard would even be possible
what do you think happens?
Let me know if you like this video 😊👍
I did ❤. Funnily enough I’ve just bought a marshalltown 4 inch width made of spring stainless steel finishing trowel. Not heard of spring steel before (it’s the steel they use to make springs in shock absorbers). I’d love to know what you think of them.
Lovely trowel mate
Mate this is where all these flexi trowels are going wrong it's not so much the blade it's the handle that needs to flex 😂😂😂😂 wasn't expecting that though lol great video 💯👌
The thing is with a towel like that you buy it to do one diy job then it gets thrown its ok but will not last 👍
Maybe next time make a mock stud wall and board it then test it 😂
Very enlightening, have never realised a trowel needed a sharp cutting edge. Many thanks, Paul
Its so relaxing watching and listening to Kirk in these videos. Plus he is always positive and in good humour.
You'd get a better finish with an old piece of stick than I could with the best trowel in the world. My Dad used to say "a poor workman blames his tools". Great to watch a skilled tradesman at work and enjoy your videos - thank you!
Thanks mate, lovely comment
You've just backed up what I've always said. It's not the tools it's the hands that's using them 😂 Nice job Kirk.
After watching a few plastering videos I was starting a DIY project. I went out and bought the best I could afford - a marshalltown 16” thinking this would get me great results. Long story short it was too big for my weak arms and I sold it 2 years later for more than I paid 😂
I have a 13” OX now which is better for me
Good video. But as a tip to all you budding skimmers out there. I had my first Reno to do, had a m8 who is a plasterer help me for 4 ceilings and take me thru the motions. I bought an Ox pro 16in trowel and an 18" ox pro flex. a plastic speedskim and stainless speedskim. Had a different m8, who is a very good plasterer come round and he looked at the 20+ walls i did and said i saved myself at least 10k and job was comparable to a 'decent' plasterer. The tools were like 300. Get good tools
Love watching your videos.. thank you for sharing all the info !! Much appreciated
Great video. You can see how much knowledge you have when you explain things even I can understand, your passion for the art shows! Thanks again
Great video Kirk. Job well done.
Great vid again Kirk, loving the music. I’ve never been so “on edge” keep em coming mate you’re a legend
Thing is, regardless if the trowel is cheap or expensive, it is how experienced someone is. You can give an expensive trowel to and amateur or someone who lacks skill, and give a cheap one to someone who has passion and talent, and the results will speak for themselves.
Remember, expensive trowels weren't around when they built some of the most sophisticated buildings thousands of years ago, so all this branded stuff is basically marketing. Sure we have evolved with gimmicks and tools but the fact remains, if someone has the capacity and desire to do a good job then they'll do it with a butter knife if they had to.
Great video, i really enjoyed that. I'm not a plasterer but i used to work for my dad who's is a general builder who does a lot of plastering.
That’s Kirk’s Xmas present sorted 👍😊
😂. Good video. Next video….. left handed day… every thing is done left handed 🙃
Great idea mate 👍
Just a tip for you. Many people will go straight to the description looking for a link to that trowel, and you can put an Amazon affiliate link in the which will give you a little money for every time someone buys the trowel from your link.
That's what most guys showing products are doing, and people just expect it
Love the edits 😂😂😂 videos are always quality and thought out 👏👏👏🤝
Your vids are great mate!
Kirk, your definitely someone I could go to the pub with and have a pint
Hi Kirk, hope all is well and good mate I’ll get that from useing a marshal town,,,,,,,,, very good video keep them comeing buddy as helps me get through my treatment watching them, thanks again Kirk. Woody
Hope they are going easy on you mate. Stay strong pal 👊👌
youre class mate keep it up i want to learn to plaster starting in mine
Brilliant video mate
I'd like to see another video like this but if you can, don't wear it in. For some people who want to try plastering they may have to use it as it comes. Definitely not at a customers house but maybe build a false wall and put on some boards in the shed? Even if it's difficult to get a good finish it would be interesting to watch! 👍
Great video👍🏻 I hope you’ve left an honest review on Amazon and a link to this video 😂
Awesome vid, you should do an OX vs Marshalltown comparison
Great fun!
It's a great trowel that .
For scraping floors 😂😂
looks ok,a good tradesman will be able to use it ,a bit like the original ragni lol ,nice one kirk, please give it another try out ...skim a 10m2 ceiling mate.
Nice one 👍
I've no idea what your doing 😅 but find it quite relaxing 👍
Well done Kirk; I reckon the coke and a flap disc cost as much as the trowel, its all Good fun
I used an 11” £5 wickes trowel for years and years , ,
Marshal towns permashapes were a new concept then, ragni, tyzac whatever you got , they all needed bedding in , I only changed to mt when bonding and then hardwall came up more and they eat in to them carbons like mad if you leave it set and got sick of washing the saviour wd40 off . I got some Nela’s nowadays they are good nicer grip then Refina’s . Agreed this with modern ones a super flex or so a newbie can make a good go at from the offset if they can manage to get it on the wall, I used to 1200 mine every weekend I do not miss those days 😂😂
Trowels with thinner steal are good for skimming like this cheap one. Ragni trowels have thinner steal and they polish up skim brilliantly. I use MT but worked with an old plasterer about 12 years ago who only used Ragni for skimming.
Feel like it’s been a while. Great content as always 👍🏽👌🏽
8 days. I know mate, I'm trying to make the videos more interesting but it just takes me longer. I might start taking a day off in the week just to do the editing
I get it. Makes sense. Looking forward to the next!
I liked it but why wouldnt you have taken ol trusty trowel along for Justin….Justin case!
I bought two Marshall town qlt from toolstation a few weeks ago mate and sharpend them up with a stone. There mint now an only cost £13 and £15. Bargain. Great vids mate
Ha ha ha what a video Kirk has found he's forever trowel he will never pick up a marshall town again. Funny enough you got a decent finish though but I think it was the bloke behind the trowel more than the trowel itself. 😂
Ha, cheers Jimmy. Its going on the wall in the workshop office tomorrow
Yeah you have to keep it. It does look nice with the colour
Just a silly question why are do all mid range and above trowels not have a standard sharpness added as std
Hilarious..🤣🤣..brilliant, loved it 🙌
Speaks for itself, it’s only as good as the person using it..!! I was actually thinking you had been abducted 🤣🤣..good see you back. And not forgot about computer build..will be seeing him weekend. 👍🏻😁
Thank you my mate
When I was on the tools , in order of preference, Disston , Tyzak then Marshalltown, use it as your second trowel and use on sand and cement, until broken in.
And they used to come in their own box 😂
I've got a cheap and nasty trowel much like that one. The handle snapped eventually. My plastering is bad (much like the wobbly job you were covering up) but nice to hear that I can at least partly blame the tools. It would have been good to have a bit more detail on the mechanics of the edge bevelling and what it is about a better trowel that makes it work better.
Love this video matey . just wanted to no why u was feathering it in 6” from floor.? can get amazing finishes with a flooring trowel tilers trowel even a bricklayer trowel with a spot welded bar across to handle . All flex plastics speeds ect have there place to pull the pennys in faster . but let’s see who can make the flattest wall using anything but ya everyday plastering trowels . would be a good Competition to see wot u can make work and make a flat wall using anything but our daily Weapons would be a good show love the work fella keep it up god bless
Nice one Kirk but you've just broke the old saying "a work man is only as good as his tools" your skill & experience just blew that saying out of the water 🤣🤣
I had this tool. The handle snapped off mid use 😂. I was using it to level off a concrete foundation, applying next to no force.
Old trowls are the best..they curl and form to youre hand
Try a nela trowel im a drywall taper and do some plaster repairs just small ones tho i cant go back to Marshalltown after using the Nela Trowel.
My first attempt plastering was with a B&Q £10 trowel, managed to get the plaster on the wall ok but couldnt do any kind of presentable finish. Spoke to a plasterer about it and he said he wouldnt even use it to clean his tools.
How's it going kirk mate, can I skim onto ceramic tiles or will I need to put on a skim of hardwall with pva first, thanks mate, LEGEND 🤓👍
Test a chickens foot next!
@onthetrowel - You've probably just caused Amazon to sell out of this trowel 🤣🤣🤣
I’m a slater to trade so learned how to use hawk n trowel doing rough casting I’ve worked with plasterer’s done a bit plastering always use the marshalltown for plastering with speed skim and big flex trowel I can plaster and leave a good job but compared to a plasterer I’m a amateur done plastering maybe once a year 😂
1 my old tradesman when was a 2nd year apprentice was a plasterer old guy would come in at 8 in the morning drunk carrying bag a cans I’d get him weed at lunchtime old guy could hardly speak and could leave a good job with 1 they cheap trowels
Hi Kirk, Did you ever think about designing your own plastering trowels, handles etc.....
I'd love to but I don't know who to speak to about it
Do you do anything with your normal trowels when you first get them?
A good tradesman never blames his tools, although that trowel is crap after 40 years of plastering I could do a good jpb with that trowel
Before I've watched, if anyone can you can Kirk.
Now to watch.
I've used one of these and it is so uncomfortable to hold, did it wreck the skin on any of your fingers?
Regal Barnes one of the best trowels I have ever used ,to me way better and marshal town and a lot cheaper
Have that exact trowel, I use it for external beading. That's about all it's good for 🤣
It has to be ok for small diy jobs. The one I got from Lidl is even cheaper than yours. Add the price of a bottle of coke and a sheet of sandpaper and I’m quids in.
Isn't sharpening the edges up going against the title of the video? Shouldn't you have used it straight from the box for the benefit of the experiment ? 😂
I agree should of used it as he bought it
Should have searched amazon before spending 75 quid on my knew trowel
Plasterer here this is absolute bollocks .bad tradesman and all that
What are you struggling with pal?
Dabbing trowels only them 😂
👍
Great vid. Enjoyed it. Are you gonna raffle it off lol! Btw what should you look for in a Darby. I bought a magnusson one from screwfix and the edge is blunt not like a trowel at all. Is this normal? Cheers Kirk.
Yes mate that's fine, darby is just for straightening the plaster not finishing it. 👌
@@Onthetrowel oh gr8 cheers Kirk M8 thanks for getting back to me. Your a legend.
Really should be wearing eye protection when grinding metal.
I understand the difference between a trowl that has been used for 20+ years and a new one. I have my own trowl, but still my dads feels more comfortable, simply because it's been used more, but i know that if i dont use my trowl more than it. defeats my point of having my own trowl.
the point is, you each have your own way of working thing out, if you don't realize that y
This bloke could plaster with a spoon and still get it flat.
Bad workmen blame their tools.
Good video Kirk. Why didn’t you go all the way down to the bottom and instead chose to blend?
Just wanted to see if it would be possible to blend in with it as I usually struggle with a brand new trowel
@@Onthetrowel yeh I know now. I ended up watching the video to the end.
You have probably answered this question a million times, but for a diy inexperienced plaster what trowel would you recommend? Keep looking at a MT 13inch but not sure it’s overkill for me.
Go 14 inch MT stainless
Nice question lil buddy and good answer skills from the uploader!
kirk what's best trowel to use s.steal or carbon u seem to like the carbon ones
Either, I will use both, I just swap it up to keep it interesting
Bouncy handle is for anti shock lol
What part of Merseyside you from mate, had a teacher sounded exactly like you many years back proper spitting image 👍🏻
Ellesmere port mate
@@Onthetrowelweirdly my old man grew up in Ellesmere Port and sounds nothing like you 😂 keep up the great work 👍🏻 edit: just realised it’s also in Cheshire 🤦🏻♂️
I don't understand why you would blend in 6 inches from the bottom of the wall?
To test my skill
It got rave reviews, 4.4 stars out of 5. Who needs a Marshalltown?!
You gonna be using that from now on then mate?😂😂 Great vid👍
Hey up Eric. It's my new go to trowel for big jobs 🤣🤣
Cheers mate.
An thanks for the messages the other day pal.
Life can get hectic and its nice sometimes when someone takes the time to check in with you. Appreciate you man 🙏👍👍
@@Onthetrowel 😂😂
@@Onthetrowel anytime mate 👍
What do they say about blaming the tools? 😁 If you are struggling with it, anyone else has got no chance
Your biggest mistake was 'trying' to Break The Trowel IN! .... It's why already 'Broken In' New Marshaltown's are a Con. .... There's nothing wrong with a new trowel if the bend in the blade is the right way - As You Said - Better still 'No Bend' - But forcing a trowel to be broken in is a waste of time - You'd STILL have gotten a decent finish if you hadn't gone through all that rigmarole ... Made a good video though 👍🤠
New dabber
Whats point of blending in 10 inch from floor?
To see if it's possible, did you understand what the video was about mate?
Hi Kirk, great channel. You know the UK imports about 60 Billion quids worth of goods from China each year, the country has huge potential which is good and bad.
Do u polish up your plaster with flexi trowels or lay on and polish with ya Marshall Town that's for any plasterers who read this thank u
No mate I won't use flexi trowels.
I did a video on them mate
Only ever use flexi trowel on your last pass as this will glide over all your nice straight even wall/ceiling giving it a nice polish effect like glass anything other than your last pass will cause you problems wen painted
Tbh I don’t even care about plastering but you make it interesting and your dry humour makes it enjoyable. Natural behind the camera ✌🏻
impressive skill, but machine-type walls are a bit soul-less. how about bagging for a more interesting texture?
Can buy a Marshalltown £25 Vauxhall Market…..Nine Elms Wandsworth Rd’ London every tool in the building trade every Sunday..
i would of binned it after first use and sacked video off 😂
Why don't manufacturers "pre-wear in" trowels?
No idea
😁@@Onthetrowel
The coke and vinegar!! What was all that about and why didn’t you explain at length easily the most interesting part of the video!
It just turns the steel black (patina) to stop rust forming.
It's not really necessary but thought it would make the video abit more interesting
@@Onthetrowel it makes it much more interesting what is the origin of this black magic?
@@hemtet5500 I spoke to our future AI overlords (chatgpt) and asked about this, apparently the idea is to induce a controlled form of corrosion on the metal in order to prevent further uncontrolled corrosion. The mix of coke and vinegar happens to be acidic and can be used for this purpose, according to the AI various acids can be used to make different looking patinas such as mustard, potato or lemon juice. Seemingly as far back as the bronze age people have noticed patinas and the Romans are known to have artificially induced this process on their statues to protect them.
Fantastic, thanks for typing all that out mate
Ye should of used a shovel
Ice scrapper
I could shave with my 20 year old Marshalltown.
Only one s in DECISION, other than a good video , if not slightly too long .
Noted sir. It's hard trying to get the right length but this is what I need, honest feedback. It's the only way I can get better
I did plastering for 20 years and always used marshall Town. My very first trowell was a cheap one from B&Q and my mentor threw it out a window and gave me marshall town trowell 😂😂😂😂 then said if you want to go get a paper round go get that peice of crap out there, but if wanna sucide and be a decent spread at least buy the right gear 😂😂😂😂
so saying its terrible... why? why does it do or not do that your 70 quid one does different? to explain to us newbies
Why didn't you skim to the bottom of the wall surely it would be easier than blending it in
That was the point mate, I really wanted to see if I could get the trowel to perform
U moving so fast the video fogged up 😊
If Coke does that to metal think what it does to your guts 🤢
Your gut is full of acid stronger than coke 🆗
So wouldn't you just go bk to youre van and finish it with a better trowel
reckon if you never ruined the trowel with power tools it would have lasted years and earned you a fortune £££££
are you drunk?
