    JEFFREY LIN VLOG: December 30, 2019
    DECADE REWIND: 10 years ago, I had just stepped back from the brink of my skin leaking, rotting, and infections overwhelming every part of my body, inside and out. After 25 years of my eczema, allergies, and asthma getting worse, I finally found doctors at the University of Utah who had a clue what my problems were (but no clear idea how to treat my conditions). Their medications stabilized me and helped me improve a smidge, but these weren't long term solutions. So began these 10 years of using myself as a guinea pig, testing new treatments and off-label use of medications. Here are highlights from every year between 2008-2019, showing the ups and downs of my journey to heal, culminating in someone resembling a human being and getting a hint what a "normal" life might be like.

    Hello Jeffrey. I just want to tell you how much this video touched me. I suffer with the exact same conditions as you, and with the same severity. I just never got infected to the point where my internal organs were compromised. There were times where I couldn't open my eyes, mouth, and couldn't move for days. I would basically starve in bed and wake up and not be able to speak and see nothing. I thought about taking my own life many times. I tried to find eczema related content but everyone seemed to not have it as bad as me. I felt alone. I wish we could have been friends by the time we were suffering the most, I'm sure it would've been lovely to feel understood. Anyway, I'm glad I never gave up, because I'm now two months in dupixent and it's working :) I'm only seventeen, and seeing that you were at that level of extreme eczema when you were 25 and beyond makes me very proud of how you handled it. I felt I couldn't take one more year as I was at the time. Also seeing someone who had to deal with it, while working and living an adult life, it's really worth to cherish.
    Plusss the fact that you were able to record and photograph yourself while at your worst stage, it's something I can't do. I can't see any image of me like that it triggers something in me. Hence why I was not able to watch your video till the end, I'm sorry.
    These conditions are so mentally, physically and emotionally draining.
    I'm proud of you, of me, and of every eczema warrior out there. We are all so brave.
    Never lose hope :)

      Hey Aurora! It’s so great to get this comment from you and to hear you’re doing better! Yes it’s rare to meet someone who’s gone through the same thing. I do wish I had taken more photos but as you mentioned, when you’re suffering so much, hands raw, eyes stuck shut with gunk, taking photos isn’t the first thing you think of doing. You’re just hanging on second by second. And it’d also why I don’t post many videos...it’s emotionally hard to relive it. I’ve lost so much of my life to this disease I want to use any moment I’m feeling ok to do other things. Hope you get to take advantage of feeling better and go do the things you’ve always wanted to do. Keep me posted on your progress! You can hit me up on Facebook or Insta anytime. Aurora God bless you! I don't understand why ppl like us don't immediately qualify for disability. Being anaphylaxis to everything im told i cant travel, i can't go "under" for surgeries because my breathing. Eczema so severe the rapid weight loss was scary. Forgetting my surroundings and how to speak has all been difficult. Even becoming paraplegic without any answers to why. My body rejected itself. Seeing this video is so inspiring. @ 20:20 when he was in the pool, i cried, water is painful for me too even crying hurts lol I will be starting dupixent nxt wk & i am nervous aint gonna lie lol but glad your skin is improving!! If you being 17 can do take it like a champ then i need to stop being a big ol baby and take it like a champ too aha.. Aurora keep being the sweet individual you are. & you're right we are all so brave!!! 💛

    • @JeffreyLin
      @JeffreyLin  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I believe you can apply for disability now if you have a good doctor to help you, but when I was growing up, these symptoms weren’t recognized as a disability. So, I worked for myself and because of that, it makes it harder to qualify for disability. It’s easier to get disability if you don’t have prior work experience. Also, disability won’t give me enough money to survive, so I just had to work for myself.

      Aurora!! I am so happy to know that Dupilumab is working for you. It is specially hard to go through this when you are young. I developed this problem when I was 19. I remember going to my University classes with bandages on my neck and arms because of the griefs and the leaking. I am 24 now and I am still struggling with it. After all this years it seems that finally I will be getting the Dupilumab. I am looking forward to it. It makes me so happy to see that really works and gives you your life back.
      You are a warrior Aurora!!!

      @@lex3711 please, believe me, you're taking it like a champ as well. Anyone who deals with stuff like this, is going to go through some crybaby times. But it doesn't take any of your strength as a warrior. It took me a long time to understand this, and I still struggle to remind myself. But no fully healthy person is able to understand what we go through. For example, I obviously struggle a lot in school, because of not being able to show up very consistently, and struggle to find energy and motivation to do my work, due to the psychological toll that it takes on me. I'm always tired. Then I feel awful and a failure because I look at my colleagues and at how much they achieve... But I have to remind myself that I'm different , coming from a point of disadvantage, where I have to work hard as heck to get to the bare minimum. I'm going to repeat my senior year because of how much I struggled this year, and of course, the pandemic didn't help. On that note, how's everyone doing, dealing with the global pandemic?
      But yeah all of this to say, never belittle yourself, because what you go through is indeed very hard!! And you are a hero just by being alive right now :)
      Also about the water thing, yikes I reallyy relate to that, remember screaming in pain just while taking a shower....
      Let me know how is dupilumad working out for you!!

    This video made me cry. I am overwhelmed at how strong and brave you have been. You have not allowed anything to hold you back from seeing and experiencing the world. You continued to fight and search for cures, all the while having allowed yourself to explore our world. You have a wonderful spirit and look so strong and happy. I am inspired to keep fighting for my health. I am also inspired to travel and not allow my conditions to hold me back. Summer months are hard for me, ive been wearing long sleeve and long pants in 90 degree weather for years because of shame and fear of ppls reaction. Thank you again for helping

      Thanks for commenting! This made my day. Things do hold me back. I still spend most of my days laying down, fatigued, cramps, nausea, allergic reactions. But as soon as I get a tiny bit better, I take advantage and try to do stuff...even though I end up returning home 70% of the time before I even reach my destination. I don’t travel for fun...I found I do better in Europe so during the summer when the west coast has fires, escaping to Europe is for health reasons so I don’t get worse from fires. But it’s still empowering to know I can do these things.

      Hey man, thanks for the support and glad you’re feeling a bit better. I’ve been on Dupixent for almost 3 years and still continue to get improvements. It’s usually seen as a fast-acting medication but it also has long term benefits of fixing your immune. If you can, stick with it. I’m starting on dupixent soon, just waiting on insurance to clear me. I can’t wait for some relief. The itching for eczema is unbearable at this point for me. I have so much inflammation from scratching on my face and arms. If dupixent can just alleviate the itching, I’ll be so happy.

    I am so very very thankful for this medication! I didn’t get atopic dermatitis/eczema till I was about 27 and I suffered so much to the point of having to leave work, depression, anxiety and wanting to commit suicide. It was a dark dark dark time of my life. And now since using dupixent since the beginning of October 2020 I feel like a completely new person. My insurance is still denying the medication though.... saying it’s not medically necessary. And we all who are going through this can tell you how medically necessary it is! Our quality of life is necessary. Just like so many others with medical problems that need the use of prescription medication.

    On dupixent since October (2020) and it has been life changing it was a fight until literally this month(January 2021). Insurance said it wasn’t necessary. I was forced by my work(in a caring way) to get on disability for three months and I was suicidal for months before that because I couldn’t sleep, I was always in pain etc etc etc and yeah... dupixent changed my life. I had people tell me after I came back to work that they didn’t realize how bad it was and seeing the difference on my skin and personality that they would have killed them self if in my same position. Literally multiple people. I still am not clear and somedays are worse than others but never the way it was before.

      Hey Ash! This comment made my day! I know how you feel...I don't think I've ever had a full night's sleep or knew what sleeping was until my dupixent did it's job. hard to have a personality when you're fighting to stay alive everyday. Even though you're not clear, take every improvement as a chance to celebrate. I've continued to see improvements even over 3-years after starting Dupixent so be patient. Keep me posted on how you do in a few months.

      Hey man! Great to hear from you. Sorry to hear you’re also fighting a tough condition. Methotrexate works for a lot of people. It didn’t work for me but could work for you. With all of these meds, you just have to test it on yourself and see. The trick is to test it minimally so u can see if it’s working or not but not so much that it would set you back a lot if you have bad side effects. And yes, there’s lots of amazing new treatments for skin conditions coming out in the next 5 years, so just hold on for a bit longer!

When I watched your video my son's condition was not worst as you. Its been three weeks when his doctor prescribed him an immuno suppressant the Methotrexate hope this drug will improve his condition to minimize the allergic rhinitis and eczema attack. I think it was mold and humidity that's caused it this time which I cleaned and now I bought a dehumidifier so my apartment is great now. But I still have eczema and it has made me so depressed I thought I was done with the generalized eczema :(.

    Have you tried eating a hyaluronic acid supplement daily? It REALLY helps the skin with retaining moisture and even makes fine lines and wrinkles fade away. Very popular in Japan, most studies are done there. Japanese potatoes are filled with hyaluronic acid and apparently it's one of the reasons why Asian people have better skin genetics.
    I used hyaluronic acid and then I also have an oatmeal moisturizer that I have to apply like 10 times to create a layer.
    My eczema was so bad at one time I couldn't even really move my fingers or work on my jewellery business. I've managed to help it calm down without steroids tho :).
    ORMUS minerals are a big lifesaver to. I'd really recommend anyone with skin issues to try it.

      Sorry man. If you watched the video, you’ll see I tried several immunosuppressants and Cyclosporine was the one that worked best for me, but other people have done better with the other immunosuppresants I mentioned (Cellcept, Methotrexate, Imuran). Cyclosporine does make me fatigued, depressed, and weaker immune, so I try to use a very low dose for my weight. Hey Tom, a big part of how messed up I was from 2005-2009 was due to steroids but I wouldn’t say it’s steroid withdrawal because I never used much steroids at all, only occasionally. But occasionally was enough to damage my skin so it couldn’t heal and was super thin. That’s what u see at the beginning of this video. Stopping steroids will definitely help your skin to grow back, but if you have severe eczema, you’ll probably need some other medication to help. Because if your skin is too damaged, it might not be able to handle the “withdrawal” flareup stage before it gets better. Either way, u definitely should get off steroids.

    Hey how are you. You have so many videos I don't know where to begin watching. I have this week just been advised ill be starting Imuran and am little nervous especially with COViD situation and my immune system being compromised. Its being used for my eczema which is completely out of control and has been for long time. I suffer from PTSD so the uncertainty doesn't help things. Any advice would be great including life style changes etc.

    • @JeffreyLin
      @JeffreyLin  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Joey, sorry to hear about needing imuran. I’ve tried that before and have some videos about my experience. For any of these immunosuppresant medications, I suggest taking the lowest dose possible (even if you have some eczema flareup, I prefer to take less medication instead of too much). This should prevent your immune system from being too compromised. As for covid, as long as you wear a mask, wash your hands before touching your face, you should be fine.
      As for PTSD, the way I deal with it is have small projects or goals I can work toward. I’ve started businesses, learned videography, learned investing, and now learning how to fly a plane with iPad simulators. Just little things where u can make progress and feel good and to take your attention away from the health issues.

    • @JeffreyLin
      @JeffreyLin  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      My food allergies are much better when I’m in Europe, but I haven’t overcome any food, environmental, or chemical allergies. So, you might’ve developed allergies because your immune changed, or you might’ve developed allergies because the environment or food supply has changed. Other than trying allergy shots, there aren’t many medications that can “reset” your immune so you don’t have allergies. However, I’m a bit different because I was born with my allergies, I didn’t develop them like you.

    I have eczema, food allergies, and chronic hives. I just read an article that tacrolimus (same drug class) has less harsh side effects than cyclosporine.
    Also, what is cromolyn? Is it an oral medication? What does it treat? I'm trying to get my symptoms under control and I've tried all the standard treatments.
    Do you suffer from any autoimmune conditions, by the way? Any other conditions besides the eczema, food allergies, and asthma? Interesting that I found your videos. I'm going through similar problems and it's really hard to not be able to live a normal life.

    • @JeffreyLin
      @JeffreyLin  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey KB! Thanks for reaching out. Tacrolimus is more commonly known as Protopic. It’s a non-steroid ointment for eczema that suppresses the skin’s immune reactions so there’s less inflammation. Cyclosporine is usually a oral pill that suppressed the whole body’s immune (though theres also cyclosprine eyedrops). If tacrolimus works for you, that’s definitely better than cyclosprine because cyclosprine causes damage throughout the body and is toxic to liver and kidneys and weakens your overall immune so you’re more at risk from viruses and germs. Tacrolimus isn’t strong enough to be effective for me so I have to use cyclosprine.
      Cromolyn is a mast-cell stabilizer, so your mast-cells won’t release so much histamines when you have a reaction.
      I don’t suffer from autoimmune conditions. My condition is an overactive immune that reacts to everything in the world, not to myself

      Unfortunately Famotidine is the only H2 antihistamine. You can try just going with other H1 antihistamines like Zyrtec and Allegra or some combination of that. Or ask your doctor about Cromolyn, a mast-cell stabilizer. Mast cells are what releases the histamines.

    19:50 Can you explain more about steroids and why people should avoid them? My derm prescribed triamcinolone acetonide ointment for a bad patch of eczema and I was hesitant. I had previously used triamcinolone acetonide cream for vulvar vestibulitis syndrome and used it sparingly as it causes thinning of tissue; topical estradiol keeps the condition in remission for the most part (but insurance won't pay for it for some stupid reason). So when my derm prescribed the triamcinolone for eczema I was unsure but since I like her and trust her I went a long with it (also it was really bad & I needed to do something). It helped a lot initially, but now a few weeks later it is barely under control and now I don't know what to do. Also, are there specialist dermatologists for eczema? Who would prescribe something like Dupixent, an immunologist or a derm?
    PS - It's really great to see the progress you've made and that trip to the Mediterranean looked wonderful.

      As you said, steroids not only thins the skin, making it harder and harder to heal. The skin’s immune is also weakened so the skin becomes more unstable. Steroids are ok for temporary fixes or emergencies, but the skin becomes weaker the longer you use it. I still use triamcinolone occasionally when I have a flareup from allergic reactions, but those are becoming rarer. There are alternatives like Protopic that isn’t a steroid. Here’s all the other medications I’m using (so I don’t have to use much steroids): th-cam.com/video/txNbJdROVuk/w-d-xo.html

    I believe I have what you have-severe allergies, severely allergic to every food tested, all Outdoor allergens, severe asthma and excema. The. Only thing that has kept me alive and breathing so far is prednisone which of course is slowly killing me. I just started Dupixent and suddenly developed joint pain. Not sure I can handle it. :(

    • @JeffreyLin
      @JeffreyLin  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, prednisone destroyed my skin and other parts of my body, but i need it in breathing emergencies. I don't know your case, but I suspect the joint pain could be from reducing or getting off of prednisone or Dupixent fixing the damage caused by prednisone. Just as people who use steroids on the skin would get topical steroid withdraw (TSW) after stopping steroids, my joints would flare for several years after I stopped prednisone and steroids. So you have to figure out if the joint pain is because of Prednisone or Dupixent. I would try to stick with Dupixent, but again, Dupixent is mainly for eczema and somewhat effective for Asthma. Xolair is better for asthma and allergies.

      Around 70%-80% of the immune system is in the gut.
      The gut microbiome regulates so much of the immune system.
      While allopathic medicine is sometimes great,
      at times, its approach is to suppress symptoms, instead of finding root causes, then treating root causes-
      medicinal cream for psoriasis (less effective/not effective)
      vs discovering wheat protein reaction, eliminating, then true resolution.
      Heavy duty medicines to suppress immune system,
      major side-effects,
      vs correcting gut microbiome.
      The latter- dramatically less expensive, especially over time,
      few if any side effects, true healing and resolution, that can be long-term- it won’t stop working like many medicines.
      If you haven’t already,
      try **Functional Medicine**.

    Would you say you were poisoned by glucocorticoid (GC) medications? I also had asthma and eczema for nearly 20 years. I used GC inhalers and ointments. I've been in withdrawal since August 2017. Best decision of my life. I'm on a few online forums about steroid withdrawal. My recovery has been fast compared to others, especially since some other people have used steroids much shorter in duration compared to me. The main thing I do is water fasting for 1-5 days. GCs suppress and confuses your immune system and water fasting makes it more efficient again. Your immune system is basically nuking everything it sees as foreign. Water fasting forces your body to be more efficient with immune resources. Look into it. I wished I knew about water fasting during my first few months of withdrawal.

    • @JeffreyLin
      @JeffreyLin  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Jim, I was born with my condition, so it is not because of GC medications. I’m also severely allergic to everything on the planet, and that isn’t related to GC. Even though I use some GC ointments and steroids, I use a minimal amount, and I didn’t use any medications from age 9-22. But yes, I know a lot of people who have improved from doing GC withdrawal because their initial cause is from GC damage. My cause isn’t GC damage so my condition is different.

It is like a pendulum, you push it down, it will come back with equal or more force up against you. Your immune system is designed to over-react, that's why we're all still alive.
