The melon prop is funny to me because not only is this the only proper food item in HL2, but you can also just go through a burnt down and destroyed apartment only to find two melons on the kitchen counter looking like they were bought the day before
"Razborka!" was one me and my friends would play a lot inbetween our TTT sessions. It was basically just a simple deathmatch gamemode packed full with STALKER memes but oh my god we had fun with that one. I think that's one of those things that I'll always miss the most about the golden age of Source modding: all those simple but fun little things that were active for a short while, but were simply good multiplayer fun and generated tons of memories.
Appreciate the shout-out for ZM:R, work has been slow but we're working to finish our B7 build which will be the first release on Steam. Let's just say we have a lot cooking with this update.
Morbus is a good one. Like a weird cross between ttt and the Thing. It got some attention on youtube a long time ago and I was lucky enough to play it during that time, but it died out and I almost never see any servers up. Sad cuz its actually really fun.
The one I LOVED back before was Devinity 2, It's INSANE how detailed that gamemode was and how it genuinely is just a full on game conversion. Sadly the server running the gamemode hasn't been on since like 2016 or earlier
I worked a bit on Devinity, I'm the Sunrise: outer edge guy, the most popular of the sunrise servers Here's some pre-alpha footage when we were testing stuff: th-cam.com/video/iA44dc8mLP0/w-d-xo.html
Zombie master was so much fun. I actually remember also playing a standalone source mod (not sure if it was actually the same name) when Garry's mod was still in infancy.
I haven't played Gmod since about 2016 😬 A few game modes and HL2 mods eventually became stand alone games.... There is quite a large number of custom modes you can go through. It's a very social game, most require a lot of team work or peer to peer communication... Assuming of course you're not just in sandbox lol
There’s an old GMOD gamemode that I’m sad I never got to play during it’s prime called “Breach”. It looked pretty fun, it was basically a round-based multiplayer adaptation of SCP Containment Breach, with players taking on different roles like Class-D, Scientists, Guards, etc etc. The gamemode kinda died when a man named Hubert Moszka created SCP Secret Laboratory, which was basically his successful attempt at porting gmod breach to the Unity engine as its own seperate game. Secret Lab is awesome on its own, but gmod breach looked pretty fun too and I’m sad I never got to experience what that was like. There’s some servers still hosting the breach gamemode, but they’re all Chinese and Russian, and have some weird mods added into them that kinda clutter the experience.
All of the gamemodes you brought up look like ones that I'd play with a small group of maybe 4-5 friends compared to gamemodes like Zombie Survival, TTT, or DarkRP. All of which work best on large population servers. I can't imagine a 15 player zombie master, fat kid, trash compactor, or melon bomber game going well, but maybe that's just my own perspective.
Thank you for introducing zombie master to me. It is a genuinely genius inventive idea, and I am surprised that it hasn’t been made into its own standalone game yet.
Pirate Ship Wars was a fun one back in the day, you got a pirate ship/fort and shot cannons and muskets. When a ship sustained enough damage (you could knock out the hull and sails) it would sink. Also, Morbus (ttt with aliens) and zombie survival were fun as well.
Wow what a find for video! I learnt a lot as a programmer (and learned hammer) trying and failing to work on the Zombie Master mod, which was already mostly dead by time I came around. I was definitely not up to snuff back then talent wise to do anything with it so almost glad it didn't go anywhere, honestly. Had no idea there was a gmod version!
i remember an old gamemode where you had races and upgraded your car all the time to get better placements and the maps of it were creative af. don't remember the gamemode name anymore tho. also GunGaym was my fav version of gungame with halo maps, more movespeed and unique weapons. and the finish of the dildo launcher was always a joy
I still remember a VS Boss mode where there was actual weapon unlocks that were unique it was really fun! Unfortunately I don't remember the name or server of that particular Gamemode.
i just found your videos and i love the coverage of these half life and gmod related topics. i miss the old times and these videos always give me a huge nostalgia kick
I played one called Mario Boxes (I think it was called) loooong ago. It was a sidescroller where you were a box trying to kill other boxes and capture their flag. Most maps were based on old NES games and you could find all kinds of weapons and tools (like a grapple) in the maps.
when you said at the start "name 3 gmod modes" i instantly thought of desert bus, star wars rp and nazi rp probably the only reason i said desert bus was the conversation i had with a friend about it a few minutes earlier
The gmod server browser is plagued by darkrp ripoffs these days. I remember all the creative and simplistic gamemodes that were lively back in the day.
u know there used to be this great tabletop RPG called All Flesh Must Be Eaten and instead of a "dungeon master" you have, yeah, a "zombie master" fun fax, fun game Zombie Master definitely started life as some attempt to bring that kind of gameplay onto the PC, it's cool you brought it up it did tickle my remembering bone
I remember fishing on the hl2dm puzzle maps ages ago and tried the fish gamemode in gmod and it felt like a spiritual successor but idk which came first
The man garry himself actually joined trash compactor back a few years ago, he answered some questions and thanked people for playing gmod and left after like 20 minutes
A really cool, and pretty much unknown gamemode i used to play is smash, hosted by moronyard. It's like trash compactor, except all players are on top of physics platforms and have to avoid giant rocks falling from the sky, which destroy the ground you're on. Last player alive wins. Super underrated.
If you do a follow up video, my favourite niche gamemode is Slave of Gmod. From memory, I think it was created for the same contest as Melonbomber. It's a recreation of Hotline Miami in gmod, except multiplayer.
Also I played Melonbomber (and actually hosted a server for it). I don't think the topdown perspective dates it, it's actually newer than TTT, DarkRP, and Prophunt. It's a lot newer than Zombie Master. It might even be newer than Murder but don't quote me on that. The top down perspective was done for gameplay reasons, not technical ones. It's a Bomberman clone, after all. Other game modes I remember fondly: Pirate Ship Wars. This game mode was a janky messy. You'd be lucky to play a full round without the server crashing, since this game mode pushed the physics system to its limits. It was pretty fun though. I liked the map with the waterfall at the start, since most rounds you'd die on the waterfall and never even get to fight the other team. Hilarious. I was also always interested in GarryWare, a WarioWare-style game mode. But I had a lot of trouble getting it to run in the post-Fretta era.
I played a game called Bomberamn Jetters on the GameCube when I was a kid, and it had a multiplayer mode that was essentially exactly like this 7:33 Safe to say that they guy that made Melon Bomber just played Bomberman and copied it, which isn't a horrible thing since this is GMod
There was also that gamemode where 2 teams attach props to their boats at the beginning of the round to make them more durable, and when the timer goes off, they shoot each other/the bases. They either go down by getting shot or by drowning
It's really a shame that DarkRP and TTT kind of ate everything. I remember playing Sledbuild/Boat Build Battles a lot. There was also a server that occasionally ran what was essentially entirely working Half Life 2 Deathmatch ported to gmod. Great fun.
there's a cool gamemode that i don't see many people talking about called horde, it's not super underplayed but it doesn't seem to be anywhere near as popular as some of the main gamemodes. it's a lot like killing floor, but in gmod!
my favorite used to be Slope, you'd run up a hill like in Fall Guys with stuff rolling down the hill to kill you but the plugins don't exist anymore so playing the gamemode is basically impossible now
The homogenization of Garry's mod game modes is the biggest crime in the world. I remember my favorite mini game server turned into a TTT server because people would join and only vote for TTT. Me and a lot of the early community on that server felt terrible because we were basically forced out.
I've played a bunch of Zombie Master lately via the Garry's Mod version so it's been wonderful to see it mentioned here. I have to agree with the difficulty people have getting into the gamemode I've put up video montages of ZM to show people the level of chaos you can spin up when playing as ZM. I'm just frustrated there's never been an asymmetrical game in the style of Zombie Master.
I'm going to sound crazy but I still don't think that woodland has ever looked better than in Source. There is something about those trees that feels like late autumn; sunsetting; wearing flannel.
i think the problem is the browser itself. before you can view servers, you have to select a gamemode, and popular gamemodes are always at the top. the oldschool browser forced you to view everything at once, so as not to prefer any server over the other beyond your filters. this allows new or unpopular gamemodes to get more exposure.
I spent like most of one summer during middle school primarily playing melon bomber with a friend and we had a lot of fun playing it, came across some pretty cool people too. what cut it short of us was they banned my friend because his name was in cyrillic claiming it was either a slur or offensive text, which it wasn't, I tried to get him unbanned but they ended up banning me too.
Nearly unheard of but fun game mode, Tactical Tool Game, like a tower defense up to 3v3 where one team places structures and various object to inhibit the other team from reaching a capture point, etc. pretty fun stuff of course it’s hard to summarize in one comment.
I remember my favorite gamemodes were space build, slope, and deathrun. Though ttt will always have a special place the amount of times I would actually get to play the game made it frustrating. I would get rdmed within 5 seconds of the round regardless of the role most if the time.
Me and my friends have always coveted an otherwise dead gamemode called dropzone which is a fighting game type mode with a ridiculously large amount of mechanics and abilities. I’d highly recommend it to anyone with a group of friends to play it with
i loved this gamemode where you used the minecraft block tool to build a fort in like 1-5 minutes with a team, and then after that you would just shoot the crap out of the other team until the other was dead cause their fort was destroyed
Gmod was my all time favorite, so many summers of me and my friends hovering over my dad computer taking turns on TTT then getting upset and rdming on my computer because they were mad at me IRL. Nothing worse then getting banned for something you didn’t do
Zombie master was the best, I never knew it had a gmod version though. Some people are still working on the source mod. I'd love to see that game get a resurgence
You didn’t even mention the best one of them all called Extreme Football Throwdown all I can describe it as pure chaos and destruction mixed with some kind of sports mini game
When commercial GMOD first came out, I used to love Melon Race. Every player is a melon and has to race against every other melon through an obstacle laden race track. The twist being that you have the health of a regular melon prop - and when your melon breaks you're out.
There was a somewhat obscure mod called Bug Boys. I'm not gonna go into detail but basically two teams of germs want to destory each others HQ's. You needed a lot of friends to play this one as teams had like 4-6 players at least.
My old fav gamemode was basewars, you'd load in to a big city map, find a building, build a base and start printing money/mining ores to sell for $$$. BUT the main goal was raiding, using the money you farmed to buy guns and armor to break into other peoples bases and destroy their farms for instant fat stacks. Was good fun.
There was once a GmodParty server that got lost in time. it had this super fun TF2 Tower Defense mode where two opposing teams had identical paths. you would place TF2 characters as towers that did different things and try to optimize their placement, money management, and level ups. EX: Spy did more damage to enemies facing away, sniper did long shots, soldier did spalsh, pyro did burn over time, etc. maaaaaan idk if anyone remembers this but it was the EARLY days of Gmod for sure.
One of my favorite dead gamemodes is Homicide. Its like normal gmod murder conceptually but it does things uniquely by letting the murderer use different weapons, letting people grab bats/knives, and random things spawning around the map.
There's one gamemode I used to play with my friends a lot called Base Wars. Basically, you got like 15 minutes to collect supplies and build a base, and then you went to war. My buddies and I would usually do 3v2 or specifically have rounds where it was one team on Offense and the other on Defense. I think the gamemode's still on the workshop.
my favorite dead garysmod game mode was Morbus. it was a infection like game where you had survivors that could not tell who was Ailen imposter. the upside was that anyone who was killed by an infected would respawn as a cannon fodder infected. to prevent camping the survivors would invidually get objectives that they would have to complete if the survivor did not complete the obective in the time limit they would gradually lose health until they ether die, or complet the objective. also survivors where limited by proximity chat.
This was my favorite game for like 10+ years I have legitimately a good couple thousand hours on that game. I wish creators back in the day collaborated on projects like they do now a days. The game was fantastic looking and playing by time I was done with it, had 4K visuals realistic guns ect. Miss playing it with all my buddys but that source engine is so fucking old it’s not worth putting time into it no more.
Oh lord this is gonna hit some people who see this but I remember around 2012-2013 Garry’s Mod had this huge MMO gamemode people were trying to get it to work. I just can’t ever remember what it was exactly called
One of my favorite modes from back in the day was Flood, you had to build a raft and then after the level had flooded, distroy other player's rafts to earn more money to buy more props for your raft next round.

Here's some pre-alpha footage when we were testing stuff: th-cam.com/video/iA44dc8mLP0/w-d-xo.html
0:28 "Cool interesting game modes!" On Screen: Werwolf Nazi Germany Berlin RP
Dude I fucking love your intro's man. Your music choice is ON POINT and the visuals are super aesthatic too.
Big *[AS]* vibes.
whats the intro track called
@@WOGBOY It's Tribute by Moodymann
@@ruig finally thankyou 😘
All of the gamemodes you brought up look like ones that I'd play with a small group of maybe 4-5 friends compared to gamemodes like Zombie Survival, TTT, or DarkRP. All of which work best on large population servers. I can't imagine a 15 player zombie master, fat kid, trash compactor, or melon bomber game going well, but maybe that's just my own perspective.
Thank you for introducing zombie master to me. It is a genuinely genius inventive idea, and I am surprised that it hasn’t been made into its own standalone game yet.
Did you played reborn or Gmod?
@@ryko1478I’ve played gmod, no idea what reborn is. U have never played zombie master if that’s what you mean
Slaves of Gmod is one of my personal favorites, it’s just Hotline Miami in Gmod
An old mode I used to love was Climb, never really saw a lot of servers have it asides from Sassilisation.
I remember one where you had to weld parts together and they all had health, at which point they would battle and the first one to break lost.
just found your channel and im having the time of my life, this is a source engine gold mine, im loving it.
Had no idea there was a gmod version!
so you're telling me Citadel, Valve's next title, is literally an advanced version of Zombie Master?
Flood, extreme football throwdown, elevator source, ZombieRP. We're all great, wish they were still played!
i remember an old gamemode where you had races and upgraded your car all the time to get better placements and the maps of it were creative af. don't remember the gamemode name anymore tho. also GunGaym was my fav version of gungame with halo maps, more movespeed and unique weapons. and the finish of the dildo launcher was always a joy
I still remember a VS Boss mode where there was actual weapon unlocks that were unique it was really fun! Unfortunately I don't remember the name or server of that particular Gamemode.
Player VS Boss, still exists and occasionally has a full lobby.
Player Vs Boss extreme is still active
i just found your videos and i love the coverage of these half life and gmod related topics. i miss the old times and these videos always give me a huge nostalgia kick
I played one called Mario Boxes (I think it was called) loooong ago. It was a sidescroller where you were a box trying to kill other boxes and capture their flag. Most maps were based on old NES games and you could find all kinds of weapons and tools (like a grapple) in the maps.
Oh man, I loved that one. That and fortwars were the best.
when you said at the start "name 3 gmod modes" i instantly thought of desert bus, star wars rp and nazi rp
probably the only reason i said desert bus was the conversation i had with a friend about it a few minutes earlier
The gmod server browser is plagued by darkrp ripoffs these days. I remember all the creative and simplistic gamemodes that were lively back in the day.
You I wasn’t sure if I would recognize any of these but the thumbnail with sips for melon bomber got me I remember those old YOGS videos
Ratlobber you have slowly become a new youtuber I look forward to watching! Good shit all around!
Hope you’re having yourself a good day so far man , love your content and looking forward to seeing more!
u know there used to be this great tabletop RPG called All Flesh Must Be Eaten and instead of a "dungeon master" you have, yeah, a "zombie master"
fun fax, fun game
Zombie Master definitely started life as some attempt to bring that kind of gameplay onto the PC, it's cool you brought it up
it did tickle my remembering bone
I remember fishing on the hl2dm puzzle maps ages ago and tried the fish gamemode in gmod and it felt like a spiritual successor but idk which came first
The man garry himself actually joined trash compactor back a few years ago, he answered some questions and thanked people for playing gmod and left after like 20 minutes
A really cool, and pretty much unknown gamemode i used to play is smash, hosted by moronyard. It's like trash compactor, except all players are on top of physics platforms and have to avoid giant rocks falling from the sky, which destroy the ground you're on. Last player alive wins. Super underrated.
my lawyers will be in touch
chair guy video coming soon
Other game modes I remember fondly:
Pirate Ship Wars.
I love the choice of music your using with the gameplay footage. It really fits in the mood of the video 👍🏾
I played a game called Bomberamn Jetters on the GameCube when I was a kid, and it had a multiplayer mode that was essentially exactly like this 7:33
Safe to say that they guy that made Melon Bomber just played Bomberman and copied it, which isn't a horrible thing since this is GMod
There was a great Stargate community, I only visited their server 2 or 3 times but it was just great!
I ran a server that had a now dead insurgency like game mode called Ground Control. Those were great days…
I have to agree with the difficulty people have getting into the gamemode I've put up video montages of ZM to show people the level of chaos you can spin up
when playing as ZM.
I'm just frustrated there's never been an asymmetrical game in the style of Zombie Master.
I know I'm late here, but check out the Evil Dead game! It might be exactly what you're looking for.
Just found your channel, love you content so far man!
honestly my list of gamemodes wouldve been Melon Race and LIDAR scanner (which is technically a gamemode)
Nearly unheard of but fun game mode, Tactical Tool Game, like a tower defense up to 3v3 where one team places structures and various object to inhibit the other team from reaching a capture point, etc. pretty fun stuff of course it’s hard to summarize in one comment.
ratlobber videos are art. what do we call them? rattype videos? lobtype? the complete aesthetic is so refreshing and new
I remember my favorite gamemodes were space build, slope, and deathrun.
Same. The description of the zombie master is definitely accurate.
You didn’t even mention the best one of them all called Extreme Football Throwdown all I can describe it as pure chaos and destruction mixed with some kind of sports mini game
ill always miss ultimate chimera hunt. Legendary gamemode
When commercial GMOD first came out, I used to love Melon Race. Every player is a melon and has to race against every other melon through an obstacle laden race track. The twist being that you have the health of a regular melon prop - and when your melon breaks you're out.
Your content is good and im glad the yt algorithm gods allowed one of your videos to pop up in my reccomended
"scared of a bunch of water, then get out the rain, order a rapper for lunch, and spit out the chain"
Me and the boys playing AuschwitzRP
There was once a GmodParty server that got lost in time. it had this super fun TF2 Tower Defense mode where two opposing teams had identical paths. you would place TF2 characters as towers that did different things and try to optimize their placement, money management, and level ups. EX: Spy did more damage to enemies facing away, sniper did long shots, soldier did spalsh, pyro did burn over time, etc. maaaaaan idk if anyone remembers this but it was the EARLY days of Gmod for sure.
morbus was one of the most enjoyable, intense game modes on gmod, surprised it wasn't on the list
I love that Melonbomber squishes the map after a while. Makes it so bloody frightening as it goes on.
Knew fat kid would come up with this. Bunch of good memories on it over the years, happy to see it gets a spike in popularity every once in a while
Oh lord this is gonna hit some people who see this but I remember around 2012-2013 Garry’s Mod had this huge MMO gamemode people were trying to get it to work. I just can’t ever remember what it was exactly called
