Apart from the nostalgia factor from someone who played first edition the Badab War remains one of favourite bits of lore because it feels more real. No crazy aliens or warp stuff just good old human stupidity turning a legal dispute into a senseless war and a powerul asset into an enemy. In many ways its more grimdark then demons or monstrous demons beacuse its all so aviodable.
I'm still convinced The Astral Claws are an Ultramarines succsessor. Look at how they esentially governed their own mini-kingdom! Seems very Ultramarines too
In another comment thread, I made the observation that the Astral Claws are a dark reflection of the Ultramarines, with the pretenses of honor and propaganda stripped away. Prideful, glory-seeking, power-building, and possessed of utter surety in their beliefs and correctness.
Every other Badab War summary: "the planetary governor was right to complain about being bled on two ends, having to contain the threats of the Maelstrom without backup while having to produce a higher than average tithe, he just took it too far"; Arbiter Ian's summary: "Huron was an insatiable megalomaniac leading an entire army of megalomaniacs who would have tried to create their own Imperium either way and were itching for an excuse."
In some ways, Huron and his Astral Claws were the _archetypal_ vision of a Space Marine chapter, seen within the lens of the satire 40K is supposed to be. Prideful, glory-seeking, contemptuous of base humanity, and, as the Imperium experienced its glacial collapse over millennia, actively working outside of the structures of power (if not actively renegade). It's in the same spirit as that of Rogue Trader era depictions (minus the marines just being hypnotized psychopaths in fancier armor), where they were as often a rogue element in an empire that was coming apart at the seams. It's a sharp contrast to the Ultramarines, the archetypal vision of the Loyalist chapter that the Imperium _wants_ to be true. Astral Claws are their dark reflection, the pretense of nobility and propaganda stripped away. They are what every Loyalist chapter could become, as the forever wars drag on and the Imperium calcifies and disintegrates.
I think there should be a Badab War expansion for the Horus Heresy rules since it's all Marine vs Marine pre-Primaris stuff. Also I'm getting kinda bored with Horus Heresy so it'd be a refreshing change.
In the, Huron Blackheart: Master of the Maelstrom, book its eluded that the Astral Claws might be White Scar successors. I like them even better since reading that.
in my opinion, the court case within the Imperial system would have resolved itself much more quickly if Astral Claws emissaries did not insist on pronouncing it "probable claws."
My space marines are from the Astral knights, a canonical chapter with a black library story and a near identical paint scheme to the astral claws. I guess sliver and blue just gives astral vibes.
8:35 incidentally they're one of the easier Chaos warbands to paint since you get to skip half the trim. Also this the entirety of the Reborn's lore aside from the fact they use antique weapons.
It isn't surprising to see the Astral Claws to finally make their appearance, I'm just surprised that they were one of the last chapters featured in these videos
Damn High Lords, Guilliman giving administration power to his chapters (in Ultramar for now) because of the incompetence of the normal human oligarchs is a good decision.
I think Badab War is partly responsible for my love of the Horus Heresy; at it's core, it's space marines fighting space marines and therefore human-centric and much more interesting.
"listed as destroyed and showed up again 1800 years latter" possible one of the 3 "sons", or a combined force of all 3, being used to "resurrect" the chapter?
Making me wait even longer for my beloved Lamenters? I swear to the Golden Throne that our favorite Arbitor is trolling specifically me! (Note: I do not actually believe that.)
Not knowing much about the Badab war, I always thought it was an example of the Administratum/ bureaucracy failing the Imperium. After hearing this, it seems like Huron was consistently on the wrong. Having a philosophy similar to that of some traitors during the HH.
Imperium: Astartes stand down and prepare for judgement. Astartes: will you do to the same the the nobles right? Imperium: of course not we just executed them. Even in judgement the space marines get special treatment.
Can you do a video on successor chapters that have so little lore that they can be summed up in a couple of sentences? I find it fascinating that given how many chapters there are in lore that a lot of them fall through the cracks and are never elaborated upon beyond what they look like. Example of which is the Omega Marines
"Alright, Astral Claws, make sure the shipping lames are nice." "But. But War. War right there, I can just--" "No. Stay. Stay, and keep post, this is not a Crusade. Stay." Insert endless ambition from Hufgt, typical fuckery of the Imperial nobility, and a cadre of Not Iron Fists told to stay in place, and what you get is the blueprint fir the biggest band of Renegade Astartes this side of the Black Legion. Kinda wish the Red Corsairs got more opportunities to sort of flex their own individual identity, and not just be a richly backgrounded Miscellania of Chaos Marines for all real effect they have in the lore after Badab, but at least the Badab War proper is so well writtem.
After you wrap up these Badab chapters it would be great if you could do the chapters teased in Astartes II! Scythes of the Emperor, Sons of Medusa, Mortifactors, Angels Vermilion
And I blame them. They knew the Imperium. They understood that refusing the orders to stand down by the Inquisitor-legat, the direct representative of the High Lords, they were doomed to fight the Imperium.
One of the battle report channels has some idiot who has astral claws primaris, calls himself something like space marine steve, he commisioned them and didn't even know they were red corsairs, its so dumb.

Oh, this is gonna' be a spicy one.
Let the SPICE flow
Read 'spiky ones' first, but that's what they gonna be 😅
Those were my exact words right before clicking on the video😂😂
The small things I love in life: the fact every new video of my favourite 40k channel is out exactly when I get out of work
What I wouldn't give for a video like this about the Crimson Fists! Great vid as always Ian!

@@Bluecho4 Huh, I guess the Star Phantoms and Carcharadons are reflections of the true natures of the Dark Angels and Raven Guard; Being destroyers.
Both things can be true
We Lamenters haven’t forgotten them… *Shakes Powerfist
you lament their fall
Lamenters...sorry I don't recall them existing.
"Babe, put your clothes back on! An Arbitor Ian lore video just dropped!"
The Badab War is so awesome and 40k needs more stories like it.
Tragic story of the Imperium shooting itself in the foot in the worst way possible. Looking forward to this video.
Love this series

This, this right here is my favourite comment

Hell yeah! This the one I been waiting for!! Arbitor Ian, get your Superthanks set up, My Man!! We need to toss a coin to our Arbitor!
I enjoyed that breakdown but I think you're missing the video cards linking to your related videos, for example at 26:08
Hope he sees this before too many days go by. HEY! 👋 IAN
Another insightful and well thought-out lore video! Proud to be a supporter.
lets go charnel guard mentioned
I really love this video. Thank you for giving me a good summary of my chapter. Either way both my chapter and the high lords were in the wrong.
The high lords didn't fall to Chaos
Fuck yeah, best series on this channel, love the badab stuff
By the blessing of the Emperor. Two Chapters in two consecutive days!!!! We are blessed!!
8:35 incidentally they're one of the easier Chaos warbands to paint since you get to skip half the trim. Also this the entirety of the Reborn's lore aside from the fact they use antique weapons.
Love the art of him with that huge chain gun
13:10 astral claws traits sounds a lot like lunar wolves
Everytime you drop a new vid I watch it instantly 😂 great stuff my man, keep up the amazing work!
It isn't surprising to see the Astral Claws to finally make their appearance, I'm just surprised that they were one of the last chapters featured in these videos
Gotta save "the best" for last, right? Or at least the headliners.
@@Bluecho4 Yup, though I'm just happy to learn more about them, especially from the best 40k loreguy around

Badab-Badab *too-too-doo-doo-do*
Badab-Badab *too-too-doo-do-do*
I'm guessing this is to the tune of Mahna Mahna from the muppets?
Great detail. Excellent work.
I love these chapter breakdowns.
Minotaurs were mentioned! Yay!
Very cool video, i like the Astral Claws very much!
"listed as destroyed and showed up again 1800 years latter" possible one of the 3 "sons", or a combined force of all 3, being used to "resurrect" the chapter?
Don’t know much about the charnel guard but damn is that name cool
Making me wait even longer for my beloved Lamenters? I swear to the Golden Throne that our favorite Arbitor is trolling specifically me!

Quietly waiting for the Lamenter's Chapter origins and lore. Should be soon based on all the love the Badab War chapters are getting ^^

17:10 that was dangerously close to spreading the "don't need to be just 1000 when on crusade" BT fanon BS.

Anytime he talks about a chapter, it ALWAYS ends well...edit:oof
I have simple tastes. I see anything related to the Badab war and I click.
Please consider covering the angels encarmine
I think they have been reformed as a Primaris chapter nowadays? Great video, as always, thanks!
Ah yes. My second favorite Badab War chapter. Star Phantoms are my favorite.
That level of hubris and pride sound rather Slaaneshi to me!
After you wrap up these Badab chapters it would be great if you could do the chapters teased in Astartes II! Scythes of the Emperor, Sons of Medusa, Mortifactors, Angels Vermilion
He's done Sons of Medusa already!
Love the vid as always, but Novamarines when Ian!
Yoooo Stormwind colors AND lion crest? Tight.
For the Alliance!
My boys!
Blood ravens like to take stuff that isn’t theirs and astral claws hate paying taxes.
The Astral Claws color scheme is fantastic, and the Tyrant of Badab heraldry is incredible. Shame they are renegade :/
I blame the high Lords on everything that happened to the astral claws and many other chapters that fell to chaos or rogue because of them.
And I blame them. They knew the Imperium. They understood that refusing the orders to stand down by the Inquisitor-legat, the direct representative of the High Lords, they were doomed to fight the Imperium.
Just want to ask if there's any information about the human auxiliaries of Astral Claws/Red Corsairs, and where can I find them?
comment for the comment god!
'This has become politically a bit more of a challenging job!'
brilliant delivery 🤣🤣😂😂🤣🤣
Ah... Some of Fulgrim's kids.
Nice
we bark for badab!
I’m really interested in these videos but I need to know: do they contain spoilers for any of the books?
Pdf force? Planetary defense force force. Ian...
I endorse this heresy.
I'm doing my part to please Algo
MFW I don't want to pay taxes
🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
Huron was innocent

no taxation without representation
The MOST loyal Marines who did NOTHING wrong.
Heron did nothing wrong?
Huron did nothing wrong
