What I think is most likely for their origin is they and the Ashen Claws are both from the exiled Dust Clad, but after the Heresy they split apart with those still loyal becoming the Carcharodons, and those not loyal became the renegade Ashen Claws. Hence why they seem to work together as they have a shared kinship in their (perhaps forgotten) origin. And would explain why two different groups of marine seem to have the same specific roots.
Yeah, there's no record of how many nomad predation fleets were sent out. We know Arkhas Fal left on one. We know the Ashen Claws were another. We know the Deliverers left later on. Could have been any or none of those fleets
I think the two chapters are different groups of Exiles, the Ashen Claw were exiled pre-Heresy, whereas there were chapters exiled following Istvaan that included red-armored terminators called Deliverers, one chapter of them being the Pale Nomads. Parallel but still distinct entities at the time of exile

Honestly, "Space Maori that stalk the void between galaxies" is such a fascinating concept and it's a shame they're rarely explored. They're a lot more interesting than the dime-a-dozen space marine chapters because they don't have this "false nobility" of the Blood Angels, Dark Angels, or Ultramarines. They're weapons, not even really human anymore in either sense of the word. The Astartes are at their most interesting when they're monstrous enforcers of a dead and bloated and rotting empire long past its expiration date, a regime that sees human lives as little more than resources to be exploited. The Imperium and its astartes should be horrifying, the end result of a self-destructive fascist state, where humanity itself is vestigial.
I just read Red Tithe and Outer Dark. Have been waiting for this video :D. The settings really let them shine as characters and antiheroes, without all the blowing up of hive worlds. I'll have to get onto Silent Hunters now. And as a New Zealander its great to have Polynesian themes in Warhammer 40k (though not sure what an actual Maori/Polynesian would think)

It is odd being a fan of both them and the Mantis Warriors, but thats how it is sometimes
I don't know what ADB is up to but in the short story The Long Night, its heavily implied that Sevatar is in some way associated with the Charcarodons. In one scene he dreams of "the sightless sharks of Nostramo's black oceans." He also muses, "The rim is where the true enemies of mankind can be found." He even has a "pet" Raven Guard in Prince of Crows. I think his story is not yet over and I'll wager he'll be taking himself and the remnants of his band to Shark Turf (tm) at some point.
I very much like the alternate theory that they are the remains of the loyalist Night Lords, and was disappointed you didn't even mention that option, but the argument for them being Raven Guard is pretty convincing too! Love them sharkey space marines
If it can be of any consolation, the Carcharodons almost surely have Night Lords geneseed in their ranks. During the Heresy, the Ashen Claws raided the Nostramo Sector, including the gene-seed of the defending Night Lords, and it's quite likely that it was used for the Carcharodons as well.
One of the problems with doing videos on the Carcharodons is that there are SO many fan theories without any lore to support them. I try and steer clear of including random fan theories as much as possible.
Honestly I've seen many fan theories and haven't read anything from the Black books. This is pretty compelling that the raven guard connections are clear and intentional. One thing that's hard to find sometimes is the order that the sources came out in! So it's clear now that they had hints towards the charcharadons in mind whenever they wrote the Terran Raven guard fluff
oooh, Xeric Tribe Time! I love their lore, my own Raven successors are descended from them too, so much fun to be had with the banished boys ^^ great episode!
Never before have there been more true and authentic sons of Conrad, I mean Corax. Sorely underutilized along with their sister RG successors, the Raptors. There's a great story in there, should they ever decide to put them in the same campaign.
We don't know much about Fal himself, but we do know that a portion of his command went blackshield during the Heresy, under the command of the famed Praetor Nerat Kirine. They were the Ashen Claws, and they still exist as a separatist faction out in the Halo Stars. During the Heresy, they scoured the Nostramo Sector between 10-11.M31, after the Thramas Crusade, far from the Heresy's front lines, neutralising the threat of the Night Lords as a single coherent Legion. But they fought for resources, not for the Emperor, because they also attacked and robbed some Ultramarines on the planet of Desperation. From what we can gather, the Space Sharks are the portion of Arkhas Fal's forces that refused to abandon their oaths to the Imperium, as opposed to the Ashen Claws. All this is from Horus Heresy Book 6 - Retribution, by Forge World.
If I wasn’t already doing Fallen I’d probably look at building an Ashen Claws army. There’s something about them which I prefer to the Carcharodons, even though they are both implied to be former Raven Guard. It’d be cool if you followed up your Badab videos with other chapters like them or the Maelstrom Warderns: the Charnel Guard seem pretty interesting too.
So cool to see this chapter again. When I saw you were doing badab Space marine chapters I was waiting for this chapter and damn did you do them justice! Loved that you were able to include the various mix gene-seed rumors. Speaking of which, do you think Blackshieds like Endren Harr from the Blackshield books might've joined the Space sharks, or at least some of his World Eaters?
Personal head canon for these guys is that they are the exiled Terran 19th as well as warbands of loyalist Night Lords and World Eaters who either survived Istvaan or were never there in the first place and exiled themselves out fear of repercussions for being associated with those brothers who turned their backs on the Imperium
a white dwarf establishes that one of their strike cruisers joined the Indomitus crusade (the 2nd crusade fleet iirc?). no doubt they got it then, since all the chapters that joined that crusade got the tech for primaris.
@@1701Emperor disturbing yet elegant, they simply deprived him and any stimulus untill he was ready to tell them everything just to hear another sentient voice
There’s something pretty ironic how Corax’s disdain for the Terran 19th and pushing them away to exile in a twisted sense saved them from a somehow even worse fate then their current monstrosity of an existence in 40k. If things kept progressing as normal, they could’ve very well ended up wholly corrupted from being so closely tied to Horus.
Love the video. I love this series. Quick question. You didn’t mention how their chapter master is the biggest space to date with modified terminator and dreadnought armor to make his armor because of the size.
That's because it's not true. Fans misunderstood that 'tactical dreadnought armour' is just another name for Terminator Armour and he slowly got bigger and bigger and bigger in memes.

Hey Ian (or anyone tbf) I'm coming towards the end horus heresy series and have no idea where to start with the actual 40k stuff I thought that arks of omen is the most recent stuff to bring me up to date with what's currently happening in the 41milenium but then I found out that there not actually novels and basic like rule books with some short stories in I picked up a copy of lion son of the forest but I'm not really sure if it's where I should start
I like to veleive the Ashen Claws and the Caracardons are both descendants of the ExiledTTerran astares, some who took their mission from their primarch as a task for redemption, and the other seeing it what really was, a way to get rid of the more radical parts of the 19th
Largely unknown to the imperium. Preys on imperial worlds. Definitely not renegades. This is one of the great things about Outer Dark where they're comparing themselves to the Ashen Claws, but the human characters spend the whole book trying to figure out if they're renegades or not. The only thing that separates them from renegades is their force of will to protect the empire, and their insistence that their edicts justify whatever actions they take. Would love to see an Inquisitor try to verify or judge them on their edicts...
when I got bck to 40k, I picked up the badab war and hesitated between the Carcharodon and the Star Phantom... long story short, I went for Jaw in space. Super cool work as always, thank you ! and yes the books are very nice, did not enjoy Silent Hunter though.
The 11th raven guard chapter in the heresy kept the name "pale nomads" and was the terminator elite that corax hated. The 18th chapter specifically was the ashen claw, the 11th were kept around because the deliverers (terminators) were useful to a point While the 18th were exiled / abandoned earlier at gate42, The 11th pale nomads would be sent off in a seperate exile. Make of that what you will. A chapter mostly made up of Terran terminators Source: breaking of the perfect fortress - gw
My homebrew chapter does a similar abduction where they abduct guardsmen and other tough humans as chapter serfs or to settle their homeworld. They also sometimes collect undesirables to give to their local Forgeworld.
Have they directly replaced the Ashen Claws? Whom I seem to recall once held sway over a great deal of similar lore. And that's why you watch the whole video before commenting.
The ashen claw are descended from arkhas fal and are still independent. The heresy books name the ashen claw blackshields as the 18th chapter, while the deliverers of the rg legion stayed on in the 11th chapter pale nomads and were sent out after the heresy was under way
As a parent, I still can't get the song about their initiates out of my head.

From what we can gather, the Space Sharks are the portion of Arkhas Fal's forces that refused to abandon their oaths to the Imperium, as opposed to the Ashen Claws. All this is from Horus Heresy Book 6 - Retribution, by Forge World.
if there does end up being a scouring novel series, this would make a good addition to it
I’d like to see some more videos on loyalist chapters that can be traced to the traitor legions.
i love these guys so much great job arbitor😊
Shark Week on Arbiter Ian’s channel? 😂
Always a good day when a new video drops. Cheers all
There seem to be a significant number of audio glitches in the last 6 or so minutes of this video.
There's some audio issue around 25:00
This was a great soundbite!
Love this series. Can't wait for the lamenters
This is the one I have been waiting for!
Wooooo! Been waiting for this since the series started! 🦈🦈🦈🩸🩸🩸
Top video as usual. More please!
Great video, would be great if u did one on the hawk lords
I’m not going to complain about space sharks but… Minotaurs plz!
Man the Carcharodon novels are so good!
Personal head canon for these guys is that they are the exiled Terran 19th as well as warbands of loyalist Night Lords and World Eaters who either survived Istvaan or were never there in the first place and exiled themselves out fear of repercussions for being associated with those brothers who turned their backs on the Imperium
Great video. Please do the minotaurs next.
I'd love it if you made a vid on servitors
been waiting for this one!!
Robbie Macniven, a Black Library author, said online that the Carcharodons had received primaries technology through the Grey Tithe.
a white dwarf establishes that one of their strike cruisers joined the Indomitus crusade (the 2nd crusade fleet iirc?). no doubt they got it then, since all the chapters that joined that crusade got the tech for primaris.
They tortured and broke a Drukhari, should tell you everything you need about how bad ass they are
Made him stare into the void leaving him broken lol
Not "badass". The word you are looking for is "disturbing."
@@1701Emperor disturbing yet elegant, they simply deprived him and any stimulus untill he was ready to tell them everything just to hear another sentient voice
@@1701Emperorcrazy talk from someone within judging range
@@1701Emperorbeating a bear immortal at their own game? And didn’t even do any physical damage to him? Nah, that’s badass
Should have ended it with a single word of white text on a black screen: Fin.
Absolutelt loving these Badab Space marine chapters!!
Is there more stuff like this you can cover after this Finnish’s???
Another great vid 👌
There’s something pretty ironic how Corax’s disdain for the Terran 19th and pushing them away to exile in a twisted sense saved them from a somehow even worse fate then their current monstrosity of an existence in 40k. If things kept progressing as normal, they could’ve very well ended up wholly corrupted from being so closely tied to Horus.
Just listened to Red Tithe … pretty great listen
Love the video. I love this series. Quick question. You didn’t mention how their chapter master is the biggest space to date with modified terminator and dreadnought armor to make his armor because of the size.
That's because it's not true. Fans misunderstood that 'tactical dreadnought armour' is just another name for Terminator Armour and he slowly got bigger and bigger and bigger in memes.
My favourite chapter
They still use a lot of scouts so that's a big sign of Corax's gene-seed.
"Hooray, it is the Space Sharks! There going to save us all!"
*five minutes later*
"Oh no, it is the Space Sharks! There going to kill and/or enslave us all!"
Thanks for the video.
After Raven Raven of the Raven Guard, Tiburon (Spanish for "shark") of the Carcharodon Astra (Space Sharks)
I like to veleive the Ashen Claws and the Caracardons are both descendants of the ExiledTTerran astares, some who took their mission from their primarch as a task for redemption, and the other seeing it what really was, a way to get rid of the more radical parts of the 19th
Please do a video for the Star Phantoms next Ian
A very cool Not-Renegade space marine chapter.
Yay for Space Sharks!
Welcome back fellow Badab War enthusiasts
I, for one, ascribe to the theory that Tyberos, the Red Wake, is actually the cloned reincarnation of Konrad Curze.
YEEEESSS! THE SPACE SHAAAARRKS!
Doo doo da doo da doo Spess Muhreen Shark da doo dah doo…
I do miss my sherk boys, sold them years back…
I personally have always felt that thematically it would have made more sense to hint that their origins were from the Blood Angels.
Pre heresy marines where so amazing and horrible, I love them!
“We’re gonna need a bigger battle barge”
I like to imagine that Homo Sapiens Oceanus is part of the special sauce of the Carcharodons geneseed
Tyberus is one of the coolest space marine characters in the whole imperium
Wish I had time and money to collect some Carcharodons.
The 11th raven guard chapter in the heresy kept the name "pale nomads" and was the terminator elite that corax hated. The 18th chapter specifically was the ashen claw, the 11th were kept around because the deliverers (terminators) were useful to a point
While the 18th were exiled / abandoned earlier at gate42, The 11th pale nomads would be sent off in a seperate exile. Make of that what you will. A chapter mostly made up of Terran terminators

FINALLY! THE SHARKS!!!
Please feature Iron Snakes! ❤
Nahh, the Ashen Claws are still around, one of their books involves them haggling with the Ashen Claws for support in exchange of materiel
The ashen claw are descended from arkhas fal and are still independent. The heresy books name the ashen claw blackshields as the 18th chapter, while the deliverers of the rg legion stayed on in the 11th chapter pale nomads and were sent out after the heresy was under way
