The cemetery is beautiful!!, my favorite ones are the ones with the dearly departed ones photo on their headstone. The man that was murdered looked so real!, the artist that sculptured his body was a brilliant artist. I hope that you soaked your tired feet. Thanks for the tour. Looking forward to part 2. 😊

Oscar Flynn O'Flaherty Wills Wilde was 46 when he died. When he was released from doing 2 years of hard labour at Reading jail, he fled to France and took the alias Sebastian Melmoth. He was absolutely penniless but accompanied by s dear friend Robbie Ross. Wilde managed to persuade his love Lord Alfred Douglas (Bosie) to come to France and all was well for a while. However, Douglas did not like Oscar when he was now penniless, and had no qualms in leaving Oscar for the last time, to return to England. Oscar begged here and there for money, even soliciting and receiving some from the famous opera singer of the day, Dame Nelly Melba. Only Ross was Oscar's constant companion, and they took lodgings in a guesthouse. Oscar's health began to go downhill alarmingly. He became bedridden. He got Ross to write to Bosie to come and see him. But he never came. In his final delirium Oscar's last words were said to be, "Either this wallpaper goes, or I do."
Just after his last breath, his body started erupting with fluids, a sure sign of a syphilitic death. Ross cleaned him up, laid him out and strew flowers over his body. It was the 1st year of the new century, 1900.
Oscar, being penniless, was buried in a pauper's grave in France. Sometime after, his friends raised a subscription to have Oscar interred in Pere Lachaise Cemetery. The headstone you see was carved by the most famous sculptor of the time, Jacob Epstein.
Would you like a surprise? Did you know that there is somebody buried with Oscar?
Therein lies an urn, containing the ashes of Robbie Ross. He had always loved Oscar.
    Did you guess?

@GraveVisitations I've spent my life getting to know all about him. He was born 100 years before his time. The love of his life, Bosie (son of the Marquis of Queensbury - he of the boxing rules) was an inadvertent architect of Wilde's ruin. When the Marquis found out about his son and Oscar he was livid (insanity did run in the family) He determined to ruin Oscar and knew that taking him to court would achieve his end. Wilde's letters were read out in open court and in those days, same sex relationships were a no no, and ruinous.
Oscar wrote some brilliant plays, his only novel The Picture of Dorian Gray, and many enchanting children's stories like The Canterville Ghost. One man's spite ruined and killed a genius. The loss to literature was immeasurable.

It doesn't matter what part of this cemetery you walk through Cathal, it all leaves me breathless. It is incredible how tightly each person(s) is interred to the next, yet it is done so tastefully and beautifully. I cannot get enough of each section or division. Even those that may not be as elaborate are well worth taking a closer look at. ♥️ Very well done. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Been there several times, also when Jim Morrison's gave was not blocked off. Beautiful place full with art. Also Cimetière de Montmartre. Never understood the fact of many women having the urge to kiss/damage graves and grope statues. Victor Noir's grave was once protected by a fence when I was there last time. Seems women actually started a protest to remove the fence, so the disrespected groping and kissing could continue. Smh
