11 years ago I was on a cruise that stopped in Cartagna and we docked in the commercial port. It was late in the day and I had some leftover Columbian Pesos I needed to get rid of. There was a small bar/gift shop just outside the port's gate so I decided to get a beer and some souvenirs.
I was enjoying my beer when several crew came in and were trying to order a drink. They had no Columbian Pesos and the credit card machine was not working. They were looking at each other with unhappy faces so I got up and bought them all a beer. They were very thankful and asked if they could sit with me. We ended up talking for a long time. They said they had been at sea a long time and only had a short time ashore. At the time I did not understand why they were so thankful for the beer and excited to get off the boat and talk to a stranger. After your videos I understand better.
    ----
I was visiting Columbia but I got to know four guys from the Philippines. A very good afternoon.

You should keep in contact with these guys that you meet you never know these guys could be your best friends just take it one day at a time remember friends are earned not bought and the guys that work on the ships there are better bunch of guys on those ships than the guys that I work with on land because on ships there is no bulshit of any kind and on land there's always horse playing people doing dumb things and whatnot that doesn't appeal to me I'd rather work on a ship with a good group of guys that are not a bunch of screwups I'd rather work on a ship with a good bunch of guys that have my back at all times just like I would have their back and I personally don't care where a a man or a woman is from what their nationality is because I wasn't raised a racist and I wasn't raised to discriminate and besides I like variety it really makes life so much more interesting it does it would be a very very interesting job working on a ship especially having a chief MAKOI as my supervisor and chief and mentor he sounds like such a nice guy when he's talking I better buddy likes him and has a lot of respect for him because if nobody liked him and respected the chief for his expertise and knowledge the people working under the chief would not be so very happy and they would not want to work in such close environments with other people but chief he does an amazing job he really does 22 + years on the job he's a man that the company that hired him can depend on in each and every time he's definitely worth the money that they pay him and then some

I know the feeling. I did two tours in Iraq 🇮🇶 with the US Marines is 2004 and 2005, and going to the store / PX, it was very relaxing. Specially to buy snacks and electronics. Even receiving a letter from home, was very relaxing and it meant a lot to us. Even a phone call. Even getting some ICE.

I see you have had the pleasure of meeting Josie. Doing security at the log dock in Longview I have seen Josie dozens of times. She is awesome. I also see that you have ridden in her van to go shopping. Another great service PIC marine offers. I am glad you had fun and got off that ship if only for a while. It was good to see Josie, a familiar face in this video.

Growing up in a port town I’ve met my share of seamen. Some have created a reputation that the rest just don’t share. Sure we raised hell. We drank too much and spent too much money but they really just wanted to experience a few hours onshore and talk to someone with a different perspective. All were polite. All were respectful and with a few exceptions all made their departure points in time. Those who didn’t had to scramble to get to the next port before the ship. Fond memories.

Chief, I have to say that I love your videos. Mainly I love the informative but still highly personal style with which you give folks a glimpse into an important way of life they may not have any real knowledge of or connection to. That said, being from a port city in Washington state (Port Angeles), it's WILD to see you mention so many places I have a strong personal history with, like Kalama, Longview, and Astoria. It is a real blessing to find videos like yours, that can make the world seem so vast and so small at the same time. Thank you, and safe travels!

Chief, thank you for these great videos and for your channel in general! [as someone who has always been on land] I have always been interested in life at sea/merchant marine and I love watching your channel.
I find the machinery on large ships fascinating and am interested in engines and machinery in general, so I love being able to see all of that stuff here on your channel with someone as experienced as yourself explaining it all.
I’m glad your channel is so successful and that you are using your massive online influence to send a positive message out there :)

Here's a guy who knows how to VLOG. Some epic footage, and excellent audio in most of the clips. I don't know anything about living shipside as I'm a railroader in the U.S. We have a dissimilar, but also a very unconventional lifestyle, so it's interesting to get a glimpse into this world. I wish we could make vids like this in our craft so we can tell our story but Federal regulations prohibit cameras or any personal electronic devices while on duty. I often brings trains to the port which contain freight that is transloaded onto foreign cargo vessels. Interesting to see a little slice of the cargo's journey after we are done with it. Lots of great videos by Chief MAKOi, very engaging and interesting. Thanks for the effort you put into them. Two thumbs up!

Watching your stories make me recalls my seaman's life of 17 years with great moments and memories with hardworks whilst on board bulkcarriers and general cargoes vessels.I bet you guys haven't gone through my utmost experience of abandoned ship when almost sinking in bad extreme weather condition but did go through safe and alive as now retired seafarer from Singapore.

I really enjoy watching all of your videos. I lean a lot about what it's like to be a merchant marine. I was in the US Navy starting 1968 and like to kind of compare what it was like for me to what you are going through. Like you, I got to see things around the world that I knew I would never have the chance to see if I were not in the Navy.
    What a great life. Barry

Very nice video presentation of the classic Mariner’s lament...when do we have liberty ashore Skipper? More than 50 years ago, I served on an extended US Navy deployment. Eventually, we pulled into Cebu for essential supplies & fuel. Alongside came several local Banca Boats with all of the necessary civilian goods and junk foods for our next underway. It was a memorable experience swimming amongst the outriggers.

My father was the Loadmaster at that plant (Kalama Export/Peavey Grain) for over 20 years. I know it like the back of my hand. Kind fun to get to see it on your video. When I was a boy I used to board ships all the time with my father and spectate as he and the captain would work out loading plans. You were only there for a short time because it is an extremely efficient loading facility. Did you get to see the plant lit up at night? It's pretty cool. You didn't miss anything in Kalama. There's not allot to see or do. You have to go about a half hour drive to Kelso to find a mall.

Hi Chief another interesting video, and in particular the rolling store with Ate Josie, it is very entrepreneurial for them to operate this business, and so convenient for Filipino sailors
so far away from their families and homes. We have two nephews from the Phils currently serving on merchant vessels abroad, one on an LPG tanker which runs from Texas to foreign ports, and the other on an oil tanker. This nephew is a certified electrician but is working as a deckhand. Both are married with young families, so my wife and i understand the sacrifices
these young men make to support their families, just like you. If you ever come to Wellington NZ, we will meet you. Regards Bob and Lina. God bless.

It's actually worse, we will be spending Christmas while the ship is in port, in Japan where Christmas is not a holiday. That means it will be just another day at work.

Next time you are in Portland Oregon I would love to host you and a few of your crew. I'm an old man but I still get around enough that I think we'll have a pretty good time.

another great Video chief, you did mention about rough weather at times, and I thought that would be good to see how you batten down the hatches and ride it out on board. I know it might be hard to film in rough seas, but an idea for future videos?
