In this video, we will be looking at the ship's Deck Team which is composed of the Bosun (Boatswain), the Able Bodied Seaman (AB) and the Ordinary Seaman (OS). We will be able to see the different jobs that these crew members are usually assigned to onboard a cargo ship.

Hi there guys! I bet you were surprised to see a shipboard related topic. Full disclosure, this episode was sponsored so I hope you don't mind if there's an advert integrated in the video. Anyway, I hope you guys enjoy!

I was an AB for years. I couldnt go home everyday after work. But when I did go home no one got it. You work 24 hours a day wheather it was actual work or actual standing by. It's a hard job but more worthy than any land job. I love the seas and I love the ships order. You do not have this on on land. I was blessed to see this. I'm with the Brotherhoods of the Sea.❤💯

    Greetings Chief!
Man, this really takes me back! I was on a US Navy fleet tug. (No harbor work.)
We never had cargo, but did towing, salvage, and just about everything you described.
We went all over, from Seattle to Singapore, Pearl to Sasebo and sometimes Danang. Hong Kong and Subic were frequent.
Sometimes I miss my days at sea. We are a Navy family, but my ship moved around the most. It was good experience. With LOTS of time with that old needle gun, chipping paint!
    Thanks for this video.
Adverts are OK when they are not over-done.

In fact, the first video i watched on your channel was that cargo bay cleaning activity. I'm really amazed by the scope of work and the fact that there is time constraint and complexity of inspection.
    Nice work Chief.

Good segment Chief! Takes me back to many years ago as a "Roustabout" doing oilfield and off-shore construction and maintenance. Jobs were very similar. We did everything from garbage collection to working on heavy equipment maintenance and rebuild crews for massive industrial turbines, pumps, compressors and etc. Most could not tolerate it for more than a year or two.

I'd like to see some more of what you eat on an average day or the crew spending time just hanging out together watching TV, playing and watching videos, playing games and just every day comradery along with associating during meal time. The things you might do at home just hanging out and enjoying time with your home family because I imagine crew members can get close to one another like a family also . Thanks Chief.

One of the most important duties onboard, maintenance, poor maintenance, things fall apart. Maintenance is ongoing, in port and at sea. Boatswains (deck department) need to stay on task constantly it can be extremely demanding and very dangerous. Were it not for the deck crews, ships would turn into rust buckets. Of course maintenance is but one of the duties of the AB's and Boatswain's gang. As you said, deck watches, wheel watches, it goes on. I have often thought that the deck gangs don't always get the respect they deserve for the hard work that they do. Thanks Chief for another great video production, well done!!!!
