I remember asking my Japanese friend who was doing Japanese Literature at the time about a Japanese classics recommendation, and she insisted that I read one author (Natsume Soseki). But I forgot to keep a note of the name and over time I have forgotten what the name was. I could not go back to the conversation because it was deleted and felt ashamed to ask my friend again because I thought it would've seemed as if I was neglectful (I was only being overdramatic though, she would not mind). I only remember fragments of the name. Now I remember. Finally!! Because of your video. It was Natsume Soseki. Thank you for uploading!! I love Japanese classics.

I have lived my entire life in Japan, but I was never into reading before until I started reading books in English. When I read Kokoro, (I tried reading it in Japanese but the old writing style was a little too difficult for me as a teenager) I was so intrigued because I had never read a book that was more Japanese than this. It captured the environment of my life here so it was emotionally gripping for me. I had a hard time reading the last ten pages since I felt something that I cannot describe.

I loved this entire video. The history lesson and the excerpt from one of Soseki’s lectures brought a great layer to the video. I read the novel for a class with Japanese students while I was in Japan. As a 21st Century westerner, it was really difficult to get past the way women are viewed in the novel. However, I loved how full of life the narrator is. One of the ladies in my class who studied Japanese Classics made a theory that Sensei’s wife was actually manipulating the plot! I wish I still had her paper because it blew my mind!

Thank you for such an enjoyable video! Kokoro is one of my favourite Japanese classics and I was intrigued to hear you recite portions of the translated text as I read it in Japanese and always wondered how it reads in English. I think this book really expresses the Japanese psyche well, which of course still exists as the undercurrent to modern-day Japanese society. I always recommend this book to anyone who asks about Japanese literature or culture 😊

I really liked your review of this book! I loved that you gave some details on the time when the author lived because you could understand the novel much better with this knowledge. I will definitely read it soon!
p.s. Your collar is really cute!

Kokoro is the most favorite novel. We Japanese learned it a bit in junior high or high school but only few people read this entire story, I guess.
It’s so impressive to know that this one of the greatest Japanese literature is read in another country and describe clearly like you did.
I’m so lucky to find this channel!

Really interesting . This sounds like a book I need to read . It explores the same themes of dislocation , loss and disorientation that many books written across diaspora do but without leaving a country . Wow !

I didn't really think about how much I was limiting myself when I made it a goal to read more classics and focused on books commonly read in American high schools. Watching your videos these last couple weeks I am excited to create a TBR list of classics to read that transcends popular United States and British authors.

Your flamingo collar is so cute! I found you recently through watching numerous "being black on booktube" videos and I'm so glad! Your reading tastes are pretty different from mine ( I mostly read adult or YA fantasy) but your reviews and recommendations really inspire me to read different types of literature, especially non-western. Thanks for this video!

I think the loneliness that sensei describes becomes clear in the second part. There's this issue between family piety and individualism where even his familial duties conflict with his families desire for him to be successful which also conflicts with his desire to simply figure things out for himself. This conflict confines the narrator when he's with his parents which makes him miss sensei. He has no one to be honest with.
