I'm from Uruguay and it's the first time since I strted watching booktube (at least 6 years) and following channels in english that I have seen a uruguayan classic mentioned and even less a whole video dedicated to one! I can't even begin to explain how happy I am and even happier since you enjoyed it!! (Obvs being subjective but) we have some amazing authors and works 😊 it's very nice you found one! @@TheArtisanGeek Other ones you might enjoy: Juana de Ibarbourou, Ida Vitale, Idea Vilariño, the three of them in poetry specially; Galeano, Horacio Quiroga (if you fancy more horror kind of stories), Felisberto Hernández and Florencio Sánchez. They are quite different between them but I just wanted to give you some names and hope you find some of them (and their work) enjoyable!
Horacio Quiroga's name stood out immediately - I've been doing a lot of research recently for non-western horror/gothic literature and I'm pretty sure he popped up in an article. Thanks so much for reminding me as well as for the other recommendations, will definitely look into them :)

AAAAAAAAAAAA. I LOVE Mario Benedetti sooo much. I tend to not read much poetry but his words are so stunning and sweet that I'm attracted to them with so much force. I'm Chilean, and reading his works is amazing, he had such a hard life, but wrote so many beautiful words to contrast it. His vocabulary was HUUUUGE. He was such know it all little old man, I hold his works so dear and near to my heart.
The footnote is cracking me up! So is the silent laughter.
Your one-book reviews where you talk about a book in depth are just fantastic. I have really just started watching TH-cam since the pandemic started and I haven’t found many of these types of videos.

I do love that in the midst of sharing profound and beautiful quotes and then "as I have never smoked I don't know if tabaco has a cold taste' in the same poetic voice only to react with laughing. I keep skipping back because it's I'm just grinning and silently laughing.My library only has him in Spanish (and my grade 10 Spanish I don't think will pass me here) but I will keep an eye out for him because this book sounds incredible. I love when we examine different people's perspectives and views of themselves and one another. I love the way you review books.

so nice to hear that you are venturing Latin American literature!!! I lived in Uruguay when I was younger, and their literature is amazing. Some other interesting Spanish/LATAM classics I recommend are El Tunnel by Ernesto Sabato and Niebla by Miguel de Unamuno, I think they are similar to Benedetti's work psychologically :) Also I just discovered your channel and I love it!

Great, great review of this book and it's wonderful author. Benedetti is one of my dad's favorite writers because it was my granpa's favorite writer. I never thought I would watch a video on Booktube about him, much less from a non-Spanish speaker. I hope you read more Latinoamerican writers in the future. You'll enjoy it for sure. I really like the sound of this novella. I always seem to enjoy multiple perspectives and unreliable narrators. I've read some South American authors but never one from Uruguay, so thank you for this review!

I read "Andamios" and "La Muerte y otras Sorpresas" by Mario Benedetti years ago for Spanish class and remember really loving them. The latter one in particular, it's a short story collection and one of them I think about to this day. Andamios was somewhat challenging at times, but I enjoyed getting to learn about Uruguayan history. I don't know whether either of them have been translated to English, but I can recommend them both, especially "La Muerte y otras sorpresas". Great video, I really enjoyed your analysis and your bookshelf is simply beautiful 😍

Isabel Allende, Gabriela Mistral, Pedro Lemebel, Raúl Zurita, Diamela Eltit, and so many more. Gabriela Mistral and Isabel Allende I'm pretty sure have their books translated to english, so it'd be amazing to see you review some of their work. Keep on with the amazing content!

That's so interesting that he wrote that about memory being subjective so long before it was shown with studies. It's very unsettling to realize that our only record of the small moments in our lives is so unreliable.

Ah I love when youtubers talk about Latin American literature! Benedetti's most famous book in Colombia is "La Tregua" (The Truce), I'll add this one to my reading list for August. Another book I can recommend 100% is The War of the End of the World by Peruvian writer Mario Vargas Llosa. It takes place in Brazil and it's a fictionalized account of an actual war (the war of canudos) between Brazilian authorities and a group of settlers who founded an independent community.
i loved seeing the bloopers at the end 😂 it made me remember that these take a lot of preparation and work to get right. you're awesome 💖
You guys should read Eduardo Galeano as well. Check his book 'Open veins of Latin America', it is a very good book about colonialism.

I just finished this novel today! Also really enjoyed it, especially how it plays with what is real and what is fiction. A really interesting way of looking at a failed love triangle...and how time changes everyone so you can't ever reclaim lost love.. Thank you for this video! Lovely to hear your thoughts x Bert

Here in Spain Bennedetti is quite well known but I feel that is more for his poetry than his fiction. I have read his poems here and there but no levels by him I think I will check this one out.
My friend actually recommended me one of his poems/songs called Te Quiero -- have you read that one?
@@TheArtisanGeek I think we actually read it at school, it's a pretty straight up love poem, easy to follow and to understand and it doesn't talk about the woman as an object to admire but as an actual person who does things and rebel if I recall correctly.

thank you thank you thank you for reviewing latin american literature! it made my heart soar a little when i clicked on your channel and one of the first videos was this. latin american literature is so so so rich and imaginative, and most often than not it has social issues as the center of the book. i'm from colombia, and it makes me really sad when booktubers ignore latin america (or only read latino stories when they come from american born latinos, which are valid, but only tell a small bit of our stories). so again, thank you! mario benedetti is a classic for us, we read it in school! if you haven't i recommend reading the house of spirits by isabel allende! i swear you will love it!

I do hope you enjoy it too and if you do, that you then give Dom Casmurro a chance (it also has this theme of duo perspectives of the same events, tough we only get one and can only especulate about the other), it is my favorite of the two, tough I did only read them in high school which was.... TEN years ago, oh my! ksksks jokes aside, it definetely deserves a re-read from me and a read from you. the same about captain of the sands, tough I want to read Grabriela and Dona Flor before I re-read it.

I bought Springtime in a Broken Mirror last year but was waiting for my headspace and the season to line up (ha ha ha, as if that will ever happen) but seeing this review of Who Among Us has made me want to just put those inhibitions aside and read it now, and then hopefully pick up Who Among Us next. I love Mario Benedetti, his novel "The Truce" is beautiful and he has very funny short stories in "The Rest Is Jungle"
If you like poetry his collection titled "Witness" is also very exciting. Many people know about the popular Garcia-Marquez but I enjoy Benedetti a bit more....his observations are sharp, while maintaining a style that is subtle and tender.
