Hello - I'm a librarian and I recently found your channel. Your videos on diverse classics is helping me select more diverse stories for my "Young Adult Classics" section. I have been actively buying books written by American POC authors, but your videos have introduced me to international titles that will help my library as well. Many thanks! -- P.S. Love the clothes!

On DuBois: I reccomend also reading Anna Julia Cooper’s book : A Voice From the South by a Black Woman of the South. It was written in 1895, Cooper was the 4th African American woman to get a PhD and DuBois straight up stole/plagiarized a lot of her ideas when he wrote Souls. She doesn’t get enough credit for informing his thought

I find the idea that a white woman would come here to state *definitively* that DuBois, one of the most renowned and well respected early black public intellectuals, in fact just "stole" his ideas from someone else kind of weird. But hey, maybe that's just me.

"The Souls of Black Folk" is one of the books I currently have on my Kindle to read, so I look forward to hearing your thoughts on it.
I have been educating myself on natural hair for a couple of years now, ever since I had an African American roommate and we would discuss hair. At the time, though, it was merely an overview and I wanted to learn more. So, I started following several natural hair channels here on TH-cam as a way to educate myself. I think natural hair is stunningly beautiful and I am now going to pick up "Don't Touch My Hair" so that I can educate myself even further.

Looove the influx of uploads recently! I noticed there’s a certain set of books that people recommend in the anti-racist and black history genre, but I found a lot of them are fairly basic, and people don’t seem to think about what to read after those books? Anyone else feel this too? I don’t mean those books are bad or shouldn’t be recd, I just think there’s a lot more one can do after reading So You Want to Talk About Race and the like.
I’d only heard of two of the books on your list and I’ll be adding the others to my to-read pile as well! Thanks!

Re: "The Souls of Black Folk" -- I've begun reading parts of "The New Negro" which is similarly an earlier American text on race. I'm finding it so informative to work my way through the ways in which people have been writing about race for decades and not just today; it really helps with my trying to better understand the conversation on race of which I've been ignorant. Also really enjoying looking at publications from the 60s and 70s on race, as they're also really informative, especially when they disagree with each other.

I can also recommend Plantation Memories by Grada Kilomba. From the back: " [...] a compilation of episodes exploring everyday racism as a psychological reality."
I found it really interesting and also very accessible, compared, for instance, with White Innocence by Gloria Wekker.

Thanks for highlighting these books, I've added Biased, The Dark Fantastic and Don't Touch My Hair to my TBR.
I'm particularly interested in Don't Touch My Hair, as my niece comes across the problem of people trying to touch her hair on a daily basis. I was stunned when she shared this piece of information with me years ago (it just wouldn't even enter my head to do that) and even more so that people would get defensive / aggressive if she objected.

Whoops... I had bought and am currently reading a lot of the tops sellers (Been trying to get through So You Want to Talk About Race since Feb) but The Dark Fantastic has now stolen its way into my cart... WHOOPS. An Unkindness of Ghosts is probably one of my favorite reads of this year, so I convinced myself to start on Octavia Butler now too! I also have to say, I LOVE your intros showing your clothes now! Gives me similar vibes your dancing vids. And those are literally SO REFRESHING!!! I love them, but I also love these recommendations! haha updating goodreads daily. It's a lifestyle. I am very interested to read Twisted/Don't Touch My Hair. The only time it is acceptable to touch people's hair without first asking is if you are a small kid because they touch everything. I hear this all the time and I am flabbergasted. Biased sounds very good. It is so hard to sometimes see our own unconscious biases.
How many friggin times did Bonnie die? It was absurd. We definitely focus on white men when we talk about racism so that is definitely important.
I was funnily thinking that I really appreciate your perspective as you are Dutch and I have only really seen Black representation in North America or in Africa. And then you started talking about Afropean. So I want to make that one a priority. As always love your videos, thoughts and recommendations

Hi! If you're looking for books to read alongside The Souls of Black Folk, I highly highly recommend Saidiya Hartman's work (read Scenes of Subjectiom first!) and then I also recommend Christina Sharpe's book In the Wake: On Blackness and Being. These books changed my life and they rewired my brain. The writers are American literary scholars, but these texts move between genre and discipline into history, philosophy. Also recommend Dionne Brand's book Map to the Door of No Return. It's a hybrid work (poetry-ish and prose) but it's great to read along with the other books I recommended. And as always: Fanon. Great video! I just found your channel recently and it's so nice to see/find Black girls on Booktube 🥺 y'all make me excited.

I agree so much with what you said about the lack of discussion and literature about racism in Europe! I live in France (and I'm white) and it's daunting to realize how easy it is to know so much about race in the US... and basically nothing about race in my country (or other European countries for that matter). I started reading "La condition noire" by Pap Ndiaye to remedy that situation and I am adding Afropean to my TBR. Dark fantastic also sounds amazing!

I loved this review, I just bought Afropean yesterday. I recently discovered your channel and just wanted to say as someone questioning whether they are neurodiverse your other video on your experience with that was really meaningful. Seeing you expell the myth that such people can’t be girls, can’t laugh or joke, is really encouraging. I thought I couldn’t be autistic if I didn’t fit a certain mould. Not that there’s anything wrong with those serious autistic people of course but seeing someone who I relate to to a certain extent who also thinks they might be neurodiverse meant a lot.

A few of these, like Don't Touch My Hair, were on my list. They all look really interesting! Have you read Superior by A. Saini? I really want to. And Afropean, yes! Since so many books that focus on race and racism seem to come from the States, I was happy to see some that were looking at Europe, where the experience of black people and the kinds of racism they face may differ from country to country. Followed you on Goodreads (and noticed we're in the same country xD)

Some lesser known underrated books on racism are Harriet A. Washington's books on medical racism (mostly in the US): Medical Apartheid (which is mainly about how the bias in the health care system and how black people have been experimented on unethically and without informed consent and abused, like the Syphilis experiment). The second one is A Terrible Thing to Waste, I'm reading that right now and it's fascinating and so angering, and it's about the effect of environmental hazards and pollution on IQ and especially on black people whose concerns about environmental pollution aren't taken seriously and who are often explicitly put in the way of dangerous pollutants (such as the Baltimore lead poisoning of children).

I really enjoyed your video, your content, I'm subscribing to your channel.
I always felt interested about why those differences between black and white, why some of my friends doesn't matter what they are doing even walking need to be stopped by police. When they've done nothing wrong. And I'm researching about black lives matter movement for one of my modules at university. So I'm writing down many of the titles you recommend. Especially Afropean. I've lived in England for the last 3 years but I'm from Spain. I want to think, to believe that things are changing within my country but racism is still there. I've read a book but I don't think it has been translated to English, it's called 'Mujer negra en España' the narrator is a woman from Ecuatorial Guinea and she was born in Spain and she explained in a whole chapter about her hair and how sometimes it seems that curly hair is not accepted and you need to straight it. That's just awful, and I think sadly is still out there in how many TV shows black women and girls have their hair straighten and I have some friends, not all of them, but few still feel that to go for a job or interview its better to have the hair straight and it takes them hours to do it and using this damaging products. (sorry for this long message😅)

Thank you for the recommendation of The Dark Fantastic! I used to watch a lot of WWE wrestling, and would gather with a group of friends to watch one of the big PPV each year. Without fail, as soon as three black wrestlers would enter the ring, my black friends would start joking-but-not-really about that fact and would start predicting which wrestler would be tossed out next. Sure enough, within the next few minutes, a black wrestler would be eliminated. I feel like that's a common theme that is applied across lots of types of media - there are never multiple black people shown on screen/in books without one of them being removed in some way :( Interested to see what the book has to say on that

I think I watched a Ted talk on Don't Touch my Hair a while back. I had no idea this was a problem. It's insane and infuriating!

Thanks for the recommendations! I'm attempting to educate myself, but everything is either checked out from the library or/and sold out. Maybe I can get some of these titles quicker. :)

The soul of black folk and afropean are already in my TBR. Don't touch my hair sounds great. When we were in a train in India, my partner was in one compartment sleeping and I was in another with some friends talking. After a while, he came to our compartment to ask me why I was playing with his hair earlier. I never left my compartment with my friends...
