Huge shout out to everyone who stopped by during the livestream! Had such a fun time hanging out with all of you!! :D xx Still waiting for the auto CC -- will add my own tomorrow :)
Having read No Longer Human before The Setting Sun, I couldn't help but notice some similarities. And by that I don't mean just thematic similarities. The character of Oba from No Longer Human shares a striking similarity with Naoji from The Setting Sun. And we already know, Oba is half and half based on Dazai (and his own experiences). It was a very pleasant surprise to find out that this book too had a lot of autobiographical elements. Another thing I really loved was the characterization. (Spoilers ahead), but as I was finishing the book I was in love with every single character and how distinct they were, EXCEPT NAOJI! And with only two chapters left Dazai inserted so much into that character that I was left baffled. He was a true master. Thanks for these amazing reviews. I always look forward to them after finishing a book. Keep it up
I think Naoji is the characterization of Dazai. I really loved Kazuko as a character because she was very reliable and yet just like Japan going through a transformation was dealing with the change of her morals. I loved the ending where I think Kazuko's child is the representation of the new Japan. There is a film of the life Osamu Dazai and after reading this one of the characters who is supposed to be the woman Osamu took the dairy from is Kazuko and I love now looking at the connection. I wonder which lines were the actual mistresses?
love this pastel blouse/sweater combo you're wearing! I have to add this to my to read list, but probably for later - I've avoided anything too heavy this quarantine because god knows my brain doesn't need less serotonin than it has currently
Thank you so much!! :D And yeah it's definitely not a feel good type of book xD Hopefully you'll be able to get around to it sometime in the future!! Sending you positive vibes!! :D
hi omg, i just finished the book and i do feel a lot things flew right over my head as well especially the symbolism of the snakes and child this review did help a lot dropping a follow righ now
I´m currently reading Blue Bamboo, and was curious about Dazai´s novels, as well. You´ve convinced me to check them out. Thanks for your insightful reviews!
Today I finished The Setting Sun. The narration is Soo good that I could imagine myself with Kazuko. Also I cried when their mother died. The ending was also bittersweet
i believe 'shogunate' is an english word combining the japanese word for commander (shogun) and latin suffix -ate to describe that specific political system/period in japan so it should be pronounced as sho-gun-nate :) anyway i love this review!! dazai is one of my favourite japanese authors and i love the setting sun, just found out your channel recently and im already binge watching all your videos :D
Oh yeah, you're right! Thank you :) I'm glad you enjoyed the review, Dazai has become one of my favourites as well! Hoping to do another video of the remainder of his work that has been translated to English in the future -- thanks so much for watching :D
i was so excited when i saw this in my feed!! after no longer human i've been hunting this one down but it's always out of stock :(( and i love how you talk about the context and history behind the book and author, i always get so much from these reviews 🥰
I really love that you talk about Japanese literature, including classics. I'd love to learn Japanese one day so that I can read Japanese books from all different genres, especially in the sci-fi/fantasy realm. I wonder what that looks like!
This review was so informative and artful. Now I have to read this. I read a Japanese thriller by Kanae Minato and I was looking for another chance to read some Japanese fiction. thanks again!!
I just finished the setting sun, flosers of buffoonery, and i enjoyed no longer human, ive read crime and punishment years ago too and it was great, do you have any recommendations of books like these? Great video summary too it really helped me to tie everything together in my mind !
I have been trying to get more into Japanese literature. So far I have read Haruki Murakami's Norwegian Wood and Natsume Soseki's Sanshiro. I was thinking about reading either The Setting Sun or No Longer Human next. Do you happen to have a recommendation for which one I should start with?
Just finished the book and i just realized Japan is "the land of rising sun" But the title is "the setting sun". It clearly show us how degraded kazuko and his aristocrats family post war.
Seji, I created a book tag for Black History Month ... I know that your video schedule is crazy and you treat us with new content all the time but if you find the time to sit down and answer my questions, it would mean a lot to me.
Hi Leynes! Oh that sounds like fun :) Thanks so much for letting me know! I bookmarked your video and will try my best to get around to it for BHM :) xx
Can anyone explain the ending with her wanting MC to tell his wife about her baby being naojis? Is it because she is mad about her brothers suicide she wants to start drama ?
Also, thank you for your reviews. I enjoy your intellectual integrity and caring approach to books. Definitley makes me want to pick one up and carve meaning from it as you do C:
Nice video mate. Love Dazai too. Just quick to mention that "shogunate" is actually an English word, not Japanese. So the end of it is pronounced like "caliphate".

I would recommend No Longer Human first -- it's my favourite and I also found it easier to understand than The Setting Sun :) Cheers!
