I love this! Like Llamas are used in sheep farming to be shepherds. Very protective. It makes sense since they are a prey species. Love donkeys
There was a terrible video of villagers trapping and torturing a wolf. They put the poor creature in a walled paddock, and then forced a donkey in as well. They thought that the starved wolf ( aren't humans great?) would attack and eat the donkey. But that's not what happened.
The wolf was too weak and frightened to do anything. It tried to hide in a corner. The donkey understood what the real danger was. It put itself between the wolf and the " humans". It protected the wolf.

When I was a kid I use to spend 2 weeks every summer with my godmother in the country. Her neighbor had a sweet donkey named Eleanor. First thing I always did was to bray loudly and then I’d see little dust poofs that was Eleanor running to say Hi!!! She always came and was so affectionate!!

You can ride a horse straight off a cliff, a donkey will literally stop and refuse. Horses are anxious creatures who survive as a collective, donkeys are relatively solitary creatures who have to make their own decisions every day, but are still capable of great empathy and courage.
All equines have this characteristic. But donkeys are generally smarter than horses, and will balk at things a horse will not. Having said that, a lot of horses are still very clever, and you can ride a horse along a country road for years, passing the mail boxes along the way. Suddenly, your horse will just stop, seemingly for no reason. All because some one replaced a single mailbox with a different one of another shape or shade of color. The horse noticed, but you didn't.
Equines think in linear logic: Can this thing eat me?
Predators do as well: Can I eat this thing?
That's why dogs chase horses and horses run from dogs. Donkeys, on the other hand, sometimes chase the dogs, and will toss them like rag dolls until they're dead.
The horse bonking the donkey on the head with the ball cracked me up! That was intentional! Loved the story and the people that took in these beasties.

I loved having my three mini donkeys. They were so much fun. A family unit that was never separated. They do bond very tightly.

I watched a documentary once that said, "sometimes" when you ask them to do something that if you just wait 5-10 seconds they will. They just have to take a moment to decide if it's safe to do it....and sometimes they just don't want to 😆 But you could say that about some of the dogs & cats I've had!

Animals are one of our greatest gifts and it must be a blessing to work with them. I had a cousin who was a rancher and i was able to bond with one of his dairy cows. It's a one of a kind feeling.
