Rats are super intelligent, and emotionally intelligent. They display more empathy than most humans! 🐀
Sadly the Rats at our house apparently lack these, they're big as a shoe, can somehow climb walls like Spiderman and always run by when we're going to toss clothes in the washing machine likely to just give us a heart attack

Rats lifespan is 3-4 years. Mice lives up to 2 years.

My rats always have "the baby" that they look out for. Usually it's the youngest or the rats that need more care. I had sisters at one time, and after the one got sick, the other took care of her, groomed her and made sure she was fed. They are wonderful pets.
I had a rat that got paralyzed one time from the waist down (don't worry, my Dad built him a tiny little wheelchair), and my other rats would bring him food. 😊

@@justaperson8781 He also once baked one of them a tiny cake for his birthday; and I also had a hairless rat that he knitted a little sweater for. I also once rescued a wild rat who'd been attacked by an owl, and he drove him about 6 hours away to a wildlife rehab center. He's amazing. 🥰
Ruth - that was true when my cousin had 2 rats and the older one started having trouble getting around the cage. Not sure if it was hind limb nerve degeneration, because they were females, but anyway, the younger rat would bring food to the older rat and make sure she got enough to eat!

I ended up with pet rats unexpectedly many years ago. I fell in love with these little beings. I would tell people, "they are like little dogs" and they would usually look at me with confusion or disgust. But it was the short life span I couldn't handle. Two years is too short. It was too painful to say goodbye over and over and over again.
Rats have evolved a lot. We are energy, just as everything is. Energy that has consciousness. Think how amazing that is. Rats qualify, too.

What a good sweet boy! I have had hairless rats in the past, and yes, the furred rats would be careful to cuddle with him and keep him warm. Rats are very social and take care of each other (and you).

@cathrinewhite7629 yes, they have been selectively bred by humans. Many rat varieties have been. Pet rats are very different from wild rats.

They’re not misunderstood, it’s city rats people hate. They don’t mind rats outside of the fact they try to get into everything, and can.

My grandson keeps rats and when I visit I love them so much, they all want to climb on my lap and snuggle, wonderful little animals so clean too x
Yes, rats are very clean animals! You can even litter train them! And they cleaning/washing themselves several times a day, so yeah, they are very clean pets!

Aww this made me miss my ratties so much! I rescued for many years and have had a total of 56 in the last 10 years but now I can't afford to keep them any more. I never thought I'd like a hairless rat but I fostered 2 and one lived longer than his brother and he was the most awesome baby. I loved him so much with all his skin folds. I miss my babies. They were potty trained and had the run of the apartment when out of their cage. At one stage I had 6 big cages that was my most at any one time with the rescues. I'm grateful I could give so many rats a forever home and wish I could keep doing it.
Rats are amazing creatures! I miss my pet rat. He was as good as any pet I've ever had. So loyal and smart. A lot of misconceptions surrounding rats. They are NOT nasty, dirty, mean critters. Not at all.
Pet rats are cleaner than a lot of people. My rats were constantly bathing themselves and each other they really are wonderful❤

I've had pet rats before and I put all these tubes and tunnels and ramps in the extra bathroom and they would run and play for ours. It was so fun to have them and they were so cute and affectionate. The only downside to a pet rat is their short life span. I just love them, though. :) Thank you for sharing about yours.

I loved everything about this story until the ending when it was noted that rats only live for about two years, and for myself, I don't know how I could emotionally handle that as a pet owner; when it’s tough enough to lose pets who live for around 15 to 20 years like that of dogs and cats.
If I had a pet rat, I think their loss would emotionally destroy me, knowing how affectionate they can be and how short of a lifespan they individually have, but yet during that life, they bring so much joy in that short time they are here. 😔😪😔😪
Yes it is hurt breaking to loose a pet , but if you have a rat and give him a lot of kisses and affection for 2 years, when he leaves, at least this rat would have received love during all his life :))
What such an amazing life especially for a rat, unfortunately these tiny creatures are more often chased and killed than loved...
i saw someone that has bunnies say they just had alot of them to make it less sad when they die but yeah i agree thats what puts me off from owning similar animals

I miss my rats, and will always remember and love them. I had 3 boys: Merry & Pippin (brothers) and a younger rat named Faramir or "Baby Rat" as he was usually called. They brought so much joy to me and everyone in the family. The hardest thing is their short lives. It is true that they are very much like dogs in so many ways. I now have a wonderful rescue girl who came to me soon after my rats passed, and who found me exactly when I needed her most.
Aw, adorable little baby! As a teen I was surprised how true what they say about rats being pocket dogs was. They're so affectionate.
I've had most kinds of pets that a person can have - dogs, ferrets, rabbits, fish, rats - and my rats were the smartest, by far (in my unprofessional opinion).
So sweet, such an adorable being. It breaks my heart that most rats are treated like vermin, or laboratory subjects. They are intelligent and feeling beings. They deserve to be treated with kindness. Thanks for this wonderful video, and for caring for these animals.
But they are vermin. Also brings disesases even from their urine. Im scared of them.

What a sweetheart, such a handsome and loving little boy! For those who don’t know rat genetics, he’s a double rex, often called “hairless” or “naked,” though they are not true hairless rats as they do have some fuzz and curly whiskers. I had a lovely female double rex named “Gabby,” she was gorgeous. She had such an attitude, somehow she became the alpha of her mischief of four spayed females, even remaining the “top rat” when a large, intact male was introduced, and she never got so much as a scratch on her pretty, pale skin, which is rare for “nakies.” She ended up dying of congestive heart failure. Their lives are indeed too short, but they live them to the fullest.
They are ALL beautiful. I've had many pet rats including a hairless. I couldn't love them more. Excellent pets.

I had a rat once and we loved each other so much. He was SO smart. Smarter than my dog. I easily trained him to do all sorts of tricks. 💟
He really is the sweetest boy! All rats are wonderful, loveable and unique, but with some, you just have this special bond. Having these tiny balls of floof (or, in his case, wrinkles) snuggle up to get all of the love and head scratches really is a feeling like no other.
I had 9 rats five years ago which I adopted from my son and daughter-in-law. They were so smart and some bonded to me quickly. The others were a bit dubious but, very docile. I loved them.

People don't like rats because we are brainwashed and conditioned not to like them. They are still taking the heat from the fact that the plague was carried by fleas from rats. They are just like any other little animal. Sweet, innocent, and loving.

I’ve had several rats over the course of my lifetime. Beginning when I was a small child, when my mother decided to breed Chinese hooded rats; the black- or brown-headed, white-bodied rats you typically see, as food for her tarantulas and at the same time as kind of a tutorial on genetics for me (I was from 4 to 7 during this period). My mother was doing her doctoral work on Chinese at the University of Washington. My favorite rat was one which I found at the brink of death, abandoned in an apartment with no food or water in a glass aquarium. She bit the first person to put a hand in (duh!) and I was warned away, but I immediately found some cheerios and water and had a friend for life. She never needed a cage, came when she was called. I will never forget her sweet nature. It’s not fair that their lives are so brief…but then, I suppose they would overrun the Earth otherwise.
