  • In this episode, Sherri and Chelsi discuss all things sewing machines. Sherri recently purchased a new sewing machine so it was a good time to compare machines in different price ranges and also discuss how technology has advanced and changed what sewing machines are capable of doing.

Chelsi, the person who turned around and said " you don't know how to fill the bobbin should be ashamed of herself; you never do that to someone especially a younger someone. You could make that person feel so dumb that they stop sewing. And what go me into quilting was me, I am a very driven person. When I was growing up I wanted to sew so bad I could taste it and the only sewing machine we had was my grandmother's old 1929 treadle machine, but it needed a new strap that moved the needle up and down from the pedal and we didn't have it and my mother was always hung up on "we can't afford that" or she didn't know where to go for it. Because honestly right now they are under $2.00 so back in the 70's they probably just about gave them away. When I was pregnant with my first baby I went out and bought a used sewing machine and made bumper pads for the babies cradle, no pattern I just did it. My voculary didn't include I don't know how if I didn't know how then I was just going to learn. I sewed lots of clothes and crafts and clothes for myself and in my early twenties I decided I wanted to make a quilt and of course it couldn't be an easy one it was all appliqued and I hand quilted it, it was a queen size quilt, crazy woman lol. Sherri congratulations on your new sewing machine. And Chelsi I am not sure if I bought your lazy daisy pattern or not I will have to check my Etsy account and if not I will be getting it, I love it. Thanks for the great pod cast as usual. Tracy in Idaho

Wise words.....in my head...I already see me making a denim & daisy quilt. Have I ever made a quilt? Nope. I sew and do all the crafts..( all of em..lol)
So i feel good about taking thee leap. I worry cuz sometumes Im not a perfect seamstress...and i am fine about that EXCEPT i think it will show...cant have that...
Will be using all my old jeans except my Levi 501s,' Superbell and a few Chemin de Fir jeans.
In the meantime and inbetween time...I will listen AND learn....😊🐝🧚🏾‍♀️🧵🪡🐝

I love you guys! I was gifted a Brother Pacesetter 23 years ago and purchased a new Brother se 600 a year ago. My 94 year old Memaw, we call her The Memaw because she is responsible for creating our great family, unfortunately we had to put her in a nursing home as she no longer could stay by herself. Now we are preparing her house to sell. I am the only one that sews, so guess where all her sewing things went?? Yep ME!!!! 3 sewing machines from before 1980,one is a JCPenney brand and one Kenmore, a a Singer, 2 sergers and a black one that's missing 😢, 30 tubs of fabric and almost 20 bolts. Both JCPenney and Kenmore machines are all metal and sew beautifully, better than my Brother! And i have her mother's (my great grandmothers) sewing machine, she did so much sewing. She made clothes for people and did alterations as well. Billy asked what's the difference between sewing machines of back then and now. I love the bells and whistles of newer machines but found I love the hearty feel of sewing on the older ones. Most newer machines have computers and so many things can go wrong with computer driven machines. The older ones are like work horses they each have a few different stitches available but no computer. I honestly wish I had gotten one of her machines a while back. Anyway, you guys are the best part of my Mondays!!! Thank you!!

Dear Sherri, welcome to the Bernina world. I've loved Berninas since my first one in 1997. I know you will love the precision, dependability, and the fabulous stitch quality in every Bernina. I have several Bernina machines and I wouldn't give them up for anything. Please keep us updated on how you love your new machine.

I have a Janome Gem Gold that was purchased in 2008 that I still use weekly for sit n sews and when traveling. At home I sew on a 1956 Morse and a 1957 Singer 99K. Basic mechanical machines and not one has been in the shop for anything but a good cleaning. I wouldn’t trade any of them.

I have a Janome Continental M7 and my reason for the purchase shy of $5,000.00 is because of the 13” throat space that I need to do ruler work and free motion. I will always be doing my own quilts so that helped justify the price of the machine and I do love my machine. I also have an industrial brother that I love as a back up for just basic sewing. Congratulations on your 100,000 subscribers love your videos and quilts, fabric designs. Thanks for sharing all that you all do. 👍❤️🙂

Congratulations on the new machine! I got a combo embroidery/sewing machine from my hubby for our anniversary a few years ago. I love it! He got a great deal on it but, it was almost the price of a small car. I could not believe he bought it! He told me we were going to look at it and it was there waiting for me to bring home! I cried right there in the store. I still have my first machine that a neighbor gave me when my children were small. Back then all I thought I could do was sew curtains and make Halloween costumes. Now I embroider and quilt every day and I love it!

Enjoyed this show so much, and congratulations on 100,000 followers! That is quite a milestone. I have had a series of Bernina's and have loved them all except for 1. A few years before I retired I decided to upgrade my Bernina & got the Bernina 880 Plus. It cost me a small fortune. I moved out of state a couple years later and no longer lived near the dealer who sold me the machine. And, to add to it, the dealer who had sold me the machine passed away and her husband closed the shop. During the pandemic I was asked to make Christmas stockings for 3 of my grandchildren. I like to appliqué them and thought the new machine (I had never really used it that much so still seemed brand new to me) would do a great job with that. Oh my goodness! What a mistake. I almost lost my mind. That machine was just way too much for me for quilting. The foot pedal was programmed which I did not realize and thought it was possessed. It would sometimes just cut my thread right in the middle of me doing a decorative stitch. I had no idea that where I pressed that pedal would cause it to do so many things. I called a dealer who was local to where I now lived and told her my machine was possessed. She was so patient and kind. I wanted to buy a machine from her right then & there, but she actually talked me out of it and said I should take some of the mastery classes which were now online due to it being during the pandemic. I did what she said, and that is when I realized the machine was NOT possessed. I just did not know how to operate it correctly. I plowed through the classes and was able to finish the 3 Christmas stockings. However, I never really felt good about that machine. It weighed a ton, and I only utilized a small portion of what it could really do. I like to quilt and had no desire to do clothes making again. A couple years later I got rid of that machine and got a Bernina 770 QE. I loved that machine. And, then when the Kaffe Fassett machines came out, I went back and got the 770 Plus QE with embroidery unit. I have never looked back. Both machines are just awesome, and the Kaffe machine is so pretty as well. Sometimes getting the BEST or top of the line machine is not the greatest idea in the world. I learned a big lesson (and an expensive lesson) by buying the top of the line machine.

I had a Singer I bought in 1980… used it until 2007 when I found my BabyLock Ellure Plus on sale and my daughter told my husband about it and he bought it for me for Christmas that year. I used it to sew dresses and outfits for my granddaughters and I embroidery shirts, towels and gifts. I began my quilting journey on it maybe 8-9 years ago? I still have it but now I also have the BabyLock Accomplish which looks just like the Juki. I use them both, depending on what project I’m working on.
I just made my granddaughter a pillow from your Laura Ingalls panel and added some 2 1/2 inch squares around the panel for her graduation gift. I can’t wait to give it to her!

Thank you all for this episode. I have gone back and forth on what I want in a new machine. I have a Kenmore that is about 30 years old. Was gifted another from a friend's mom that is over 50 years old. I am ready for a machine that will make buttonholes without me having to stand on my head! I also see the Juki TLs and think they would be good to have as well. Retiring in 5 months and will have more time to sew. Therefore, I want good...but not to break the bank. Love that you get floor models and/or buy from a friend. I am so tired of sales people who seem to look down on my refusal to take out a second mortgage for a new machine...or two.

Chelsi - I have almost exclusively used Husqvarna Viking machines for the past 40+ years. Given that PFAFF, Husqvarna Viking, & Singer are now all under one "umbrella" (aka, SVP Worldwide), I would suggest that anyone looking for a new machine think of the brands like this: Singer is the budget-friendly line; Husqvarna Viking is their mid-range, and PFAFF is the top of the line brand. The good news is, Viking & PFAFF dealers will take an older machine as a trade-in, which will reduce the price. Parts are interchangable (for the most part) between PFAFF & Viking. That said, there is now a PFAFF model which is not only WiFi capable (as are many of the lower priced models & Viking models), but it also has a Siri-like AI component - you can now talk to your top of the line PFAFF! However, all of that comes with a pretty heavy duty price tag - around $20K. But, these machines are absolutely amazing, and real workhorses.

That fun story Chelsi about the bobbin it reminds me of I buy a machine for my daughter thinking that this is just straight forward machine no bells no whistles she calls me cause she needs help with the bobbin she had the whole bobbin case removed from the machine I had to go to her house and put the machine back together. So don’t ever take it for granted it could be challenging. Always enjoy your video’s great content.

I have the Bernette B79 and LOVE it! Bernina is my dream machine, but a bit out of my price range at the moment. However Bernette is a brand under the Bernina company umbrella and more affordable. You also get access to the Bernina Toolbox and embroidery software. The B79 is a combi- sewing and embroidery machine, so I can learn embroidery in addition to all of the great sewing features.

Love today’s podcast. Thank you for addressing the issue of sewing machines, so helpful. I now sew on a Juki 2010Q AND I LOVE IT! Back in the day, in the 60’s, I learned to sew on an old fashioned treadle machine! Then I graduated to my mother’s Singer - it only did a straight stitch, but had an attachment that would make a buttonhole! Again, really enjoyed todays podcast❤️

I love listening to you three interact. It's nice listening to chat, without the sew sometimes. I have been using a Singer my whole life. It's what my mom used. I miss that they don't make any to fit in a sewing table anymore. That is the biggest downfall to sewing. They replaced that table with a bunch of expensive extensions and other devices. I piece on a Singer 9960. Until this year, that was the most expensive machine I purchased. I bought it for the embroidery features, but I don't like them. It is the quietest machine I have ever owned. I do QYAG on a Singer Heavy Duty from Walmart and it is great. I bought a Janome Heavy Duty once, but after upholstering a couch, it quit on me, so I quit on it. Two years ago, I decided to get a Juki. It took me 1.5 years to talk myself into spending that kind of money, but I just want to straight stitch and needed more throat space. i bought a 2000QI and I love it. I don't care of the heel button on the foot peddle that cuts the thread. My plan is to never buy another machine. I want to be able to retire in two years and enjoy it. Keep up the great work. I love your patterns and your fabric and you all have great personalities. 😁

I have a Featherweight. Great little machines that you can maintain yourself. There are groups and shops devoted to them. It’s like the Juki in that it’s a straight stitch machine. The cool thing is the attachments that came with it. The ingenuity of those attachments is remarkable. I also have a Baby Lock Crescendo which is a quilter’s edition machine with a huge throat and came with 13 feet including a digital walking foot. Love the needle up/down option, the auto threader, and the knee lever to lift the foot. What is cool is I have an attachment and can use my BL feet on my Featherweight.

I started out on my mother’s and an aunt’s sewing machine. My husband bought me a Babylock for Christmas ‘92. It was still going strong after 30 years, but I gave it in 2022 to a young girl that was wanting to learn. I bought a Brother 6200D in 2014. Love that machine, but for traveling I have a simple Bernette Sew & Go. Also have a ‘54 Singer featherweight that sews like a dream.

Welcome to the Bernina family! I got my first used one 38 years ago and used it until I upgraded to a floor model 550qe (quilters edition) in 2016 when I started quilting. Like you, Sherri, I saved quite a bit on the floor model/closeout on that new machine! I love how durable, reliable and quiet these machines and I’ll never go to another model.

Thanks for another great episode!!! I have been sewing with a small Brother since starting in 2019 and made many beautiful quilt tops with it. I've been contemplating the Juki TL 2010Q as my next upgrade and my "dream machine" when I hit the Powerball will be a Bernina 770QE!! Lol!! Beautiful quilts, Chelsi!!!

I love Brother. It's a familiar name because my grandmothers' were brother and singer. Juki looks super dependable. Bernina looks so fancy. I bought a brother and was gifted a singer. My dream machine is pfaff and to get a long arm. 🤞🤞

I love my Pfaff and recently bought a new one. I love the IDT system - you don't need a walking foot. The new one cuts the thread with the touch of a button which I didn't have with the old one. Saves a lot of thread. My old one (about 23 years old) still works so keeping it for backup. The past few years I have really gotten into hand piecing which I love so the machine doesn't get as much of a workout as in the past. Love listening to you all!

Sherri, My husband is not happy with you as I just bought a new sewing machine. I have the Bernina 440 QE actually three of them with one out of state in our vacation condo. I went to look at the Bernina's specifically Sherri's model mainly for the thread cutter and larger bobbin. Previously I considered getting a Juki but, I don't even sew at full speed on my Bernina. I ended up getting the Bernina 570QE because of the dual feed. Hopefully my nesting seams will not flip as much when piecing and I won't have to put on my walking foot as much which is a pain. I also like a little larger throat on the 570QE and it will still fit in my old quilter's dream sewing cabinet.

I love this topic. I started with a cheap entry level machine and told myself that I would buy a decent machine if I still like sewing after 1 year. At the 1 year mark I bought a Viking sewing machine and have always struggled getting that perfect 1/4inch seam. I had to send in my machine for service and didn’t have a backup sewing machine over the holidays, and I have the perfect 1/4 inch on the cheaper machine.

I have two machines JUKI TL-18QVP & Bernina LE 830 & love them both but my Juki is my favorite! I paid $1100.00 for it. Not a bad price for a beginner and It is so heavy duty especially when sewing layers and my foot control cuts my thread!! Love it! I use it mostly but my Bernina is a beautiful machine too! I love all of the things that can be done with it❤ plus embroidery! I was fortunate to buy a used Bernina with little time on it for $2500 a few years ago and back in the earlier 2000’s it was around $16,000! Both machines are great but everyday use for me is my Juki😊 I bought it for my birthday last year and no regrets! Nice video and thanks for elaborating on all of the different sewing machines😊 Congrats on 100,000 subscribers 🎉 Oh, there is 1/4” foot for the Juki and a scant 1/4”!

Open invitation and people showed up. That was a little over 10 years ago. For the past few years they have been in a community center with room to grow. I found them by blasted FB with "Hey any guilds out there!??" One lovely lady yelled back, "Hey we're here!" Been a member almost 1 year. Our conversation reminded me of that tiktok meme where the dogs yell back n forth hey whats your name? Tony, what's yours? Ezekiel!

Oh my, what beautiful quilts on display this morning! I can't wait for this collection!
My machine is a Juki TL Qi 2000, which I had purchased because it most resembled the 1950 Riccar machine that my grandmother had given me. This had been my first personal machine and remained my main machine for 20 years. I love a basic, metal, straight stitch, wide-throated machine that can get through just about anything. I change the needles (Schmetz chrome) out for every other project or so, and I always use a denim needle when I am sewing my binding. I clean it fairly meticulously and baby it well, because I hope for it to last as long as Grandma's machine had lasted me.
I find that most times, using the standard foot with a scant edge of fabric makes for the perfect quarter inch seam once unfolded and pressed. I have a quarter inch foot, but I have found it is not quite necessary. I would rather recommend measureing a test seam with every project, which may or may not have a different fabric or thread that unfolds or presses uniquely.
That said, I have toyed with a few computerized machines for decorative stitches, but I don't use them nearly as often, and I still have not found one that I have been entirely satisfied with. I could use a travel machine, however, and so this episode was great for reminding me to think about that in my travels.
My dream splurge is the Juki KIREI computerized machine, whichq does far more than I will ever, ever use - including that touchscreen with Wi-Fi and video tutorial capability - but it is lovely!

I have been a Bernina girl for 25 years and currently sewing on a 590. One thing I love about Bernina is the vast selection of feet. There are many that are wonderful for quilters. You may want to look into purchasing The Big Book of Feet it is wonderful and goes into great detail on every single foot that Bernina makes. Foot 71 is great for binding and there are a few videos here on TH-cam that will help you understand how to use it. There are a few choices for 1/4" feet and many videos on them. I know you will become a big fan of Bernina the more you get used to your machine. I am so happy for you!! You also should check out Bernina Jeff - he is our TH-cam king when it comes to Bernina machines and how to care for them. Sewing with Cody and Pete is another wonderful Bernina channel. He is very thorough with his videos - just like you are!! I am getting ready to use one of your patterns to make my precious 85 year old housebound mother a lap quilt. I just have to decide which one. Love your channel so much and thank you from my heart for all the videos.

I have a 20+ year old Elna that stays in my sewing room, I think it cost about $700. I have an Elna Star which is a small travel machine that I love, it cost me about $500, and it’s about 6 years old. I keep thinking about a new sewing room machine but the prices are crazy. I have never had good luck with Bernina. I think my next machine will be a Janome, Juki or Brother.

I’ve only used Singer machines. My aunt had a Singer from 1928, then she bought a Rocketeer (500a). I learned on these machines and I have them and use them. They sew beautifully and I can do some repairs on them. I bought a 513 when I graduated college and recently bought a Quantum Stylist for travel. I’d love to buy a 301 (the Featherweight’s big brother). I’m old school 🤷🏼‍♀️

I started quilting in 2010 on an $89 Singer from Walmart. Few yrs later bumped up to a Singer Confidence Quilter for $259. Kept that til it died several years later and then purchased the Juki QVP2000 - my forever machine, if I won the lottery tomorrow would buy another for a backup. It has s few more features than the Singer, otherwise would have bought another Singer Confidence Quilter, it sewed like a dream, just happened to go to a quilt show a few days after it died and found tried out some machines there. The Juki hummed along like the Singer but had extra features that I love and use all the time, cost $1500 at the time but worth every penny.
