Shout out to Golden Axe 3, the most underrated beat em up of the 16-bit era. Additionally, Streets of Rage 2 is the greatest video game of all-time. I'm glad it's in the #1 spot.
A great list of titles. I'm glad you added Oriental Legend 2. It was an absolute crime it wasn't included in the recent IGS Collection because otherwise the line up was great. The Gladiator is definitely a hidden gem that deserves more exposure. Gaia Crusaders Sonic Blastman 2 Batman Returns (snes) Captain Commando Would have been some of my additions but even there there are still loads more great titles.
GREETINGS....Kung Fu Master,Vigilante,Rastan,Troyan,Rygar,P.O.W,Altered Beast,Alien Storm,Dark Adventure,Shaolins road,and of course my favorite Usagi Jojimbo on c64
cadilac and dino, punisher, final fight, simpsons, goldenaxe the return......the holly 5. i was actually disappointed with the new tmnt... the levels feel blands, the boss fights boring, and the grinding for special moves is annyoing.
How TF can people consider SoR4 a GOOD beat 'em up is beyond me. IT SUCKS!!! It's worse than 3!! You have no dash, no run, it's not intuitive, you cannot play with your casual friends like you did all the previous ones, the new characters SUCK, and to top it all it's woke AF. I've played better openBOR games
It’s fine if you don’t like it, but it definitely doesn’t suck. It takes all of the best parts of the originals games and refined it. I played through the whole game with two non gamers, and they were able to pick it up pretty quickly. And yeah, how is it woke? 😅
And I hate those visuals too. That kinda clumsy "Flash" art style just does not work for me. It's fugly as **** imo. I think the dude only considers it so highly because it's another Streets of Rage game, which he clearly can't look at fully objectively next to all the other beat 'em ups out there. But I guess that's what opinions are all about.
Kudos on including more obscure titles many others miss, like Sengoku 3 and Cadillacs & Dinosaurs. I myself only discovered Sengoku 3 a few years ago and it quickly became one of my favorites. My personal top 10 would probably look like this (in no particular order): 1. TMNT (arcade) 2. TMNT IV (SNES) 3. Streets of Rage 2 (Genesis) 4. Streets of Rage 4 (multiplatform) 5. X-Men (arcade) 6. Simpsons (arcade) 7. Cadillacs and Dinosaurs (arcade) 8. Double Dragon Advance (GBA) 9. Sengoku 3 (Neo Geo) 10. Captain America & the Avengers (arcade)
Look up Astra: Knights of Veda; it's art alone will put it among the top instantly as no other game could live up to it's development cycle. Sadly, is quite underrated being a korean game; it's second season bringing more story chapters next month should be really exciting!
@@ClassicCo-op It does have co-op! As well as guilds to set up goals with your team mates! Raids are planned! It's pretty much a MMO lite. And speaking of, don't you think Dungeon Fighter also qualified to the list?
Yes!! So good to see Guardians aka Denjin Makia 2 in here. Barely anyone talks about this game. Lucky enough to have the arcade PCB as it never got a home release and likely never will.
If Turtles in Time for SNES is that far down the list and Streets of Rage 2 is right at the top, with all that suggests, I can't take the list entirely seriously to be honest. Streets of Rage 2 is the best Genesis beat 'em up for sure, and arguably the best 16-bit beat 'em up (I'd put Turtles in Time on SNES right up there in that same category). But if you're including all the best beat 'em ups ever, including all the truly amazing arcade beat 'em ups, your just not seeing things objectively if Streets of Rage 2 is still rated higher than every single one of them. Also, no arcade versions of Final Fight, The Simpsons, King of Dragons, Vendetta, Revenge of Death Adder?
I don’t think SOR2 being considered the all time best beat em up is as controversial as you’re making it out to be. Lots of people agree with me on that. I think it’s as close to perfect as a game can get. So I definitely stand by my placement.
@@ClassicCo-op I think in terms of 16-bit home console beat 'em ups, sure. But when we're talking about every beat 'em up out there, I think it's a bit crazy to put SoR2 above literally all of the seminal arcade beat 'em ups and newer beat 'em ups that better it in pretty much every single way in most cases. I mean, it's a great beat 'em up, no doubt about it, but there's just some weird distortion bubble and funnel effect going on when comparing one particular 16-bit console to everything else out there these days imo. I would put SoR2 way above Final Fight on SNES for example, but it's definitely not better than Final Fight in the actual arcade imo, and certainly not to the degree that SoR2 gets top spot when Final Fight doesn't even make the list, as just one example of many. And Streets of Rage 2 better than 4-player Vendetta arcade or 4-player Turtles in Time arcade, etc--not buying it personally. But, hey, each to their own. And it's your list.

Love golden axe 3 too! Streets of rage 2 is probably my all time favorite game too.
This is one of the best videos about beat' em ups I've ever seen!! Great list. Maybe you could do another one with underrated beat' em ups.
Thank you! I appreciate that! I did do a beat em up hidden gems video a while ago. I’ll definitely do more like that soon!
@@ClassicCo-op oh cool! I'll check that out!
Great list. Sor4 is the one true king of the north! Streets of red is extremely good, it's like dd gaiden
Love Streets of Red too! Need to play through it again.
#1 River City Ransom #2 Final Fight
I love both of those games.

Gaia Crusaders
Sonic Blastman 2
Batman Returns (snes)
Captain Commando
Would have been some of my additions but even there there are still loads more great titles.
Thanks! I still need to try Gaia crusaders!
Dragon's Crown
Love that game too!
My top 1 Guardian héroes , hi from Venezuela
One of my favorites!
Charlie Murder never gets a mention on these lists, one of the best most stylish games ever
Haven’t played that in years! Gonna have to revisit it.
I feel so alone in liking SoR3 more than 2
I love SOR3 also. I think it doesn’t get the respect it deserves.

Was the woke part the bit where you beat the crap out of the dominatrix girls and the scantily clad Violet Berlin? 🤔
@@ClassicCo-op Dude, I love you. Love your videos, but I disagree. And I prefer not to dwelve into the woke stuff.
Great list, SOR2 is probably my favourite game ever in any genre
Same!
SOR2 definitely my favorite, although I prefer playing Streets Of Rage Remake which is damn near perfect
I still need to play that!
No.1 is absolutely correct. But who would EVER want to turn off friendly fire?
You like beating up your friends? 🤣

I missed Scott Pilgrim vs The World: the Game in this list, but you talked about a few games I don't know so I'll definitely check them out!
I do enjoy that game, but after trying it again recently, there are certain things I don’t think hold up well.
@@ClassicCo-op I understand that. I love the game and it's a lot of fun, but isn't as polished as most of the titles in your list.
the enemies in this game are soo spongy...took forever to beat even the simple one.
@@Emulator_Crossing That's very true... I'm starting to doubt why I love that game so much LOL
Great list. Shame you didn’t include more Konami games. Both Vendetta and Violent Storm are in my Top 10 best beat em ups ever.
Urban lockdown for pc. Digitized sprites, great combos and loads of weapons. It's available on steam now
I’ll have to try it out! Did you work on the game?
