  • The full experience from onset until the winds diminished on the Linn/Benton line near Fairfax, IA. This is the long video and a shorter one is linked below. The strongest gusts likely exceeded 100mph and damage was immense in Fairfax.

    It hit here in the Chicago suburbs, too (I live in an apartment in Buffalo Grove, IL). Winds made it up to about 80-ish, I stood outside in it for as long as I could!

    I live in GA and we get some storms and have had one derecho I can remember but these that hit the Midwest are so powerful because of the flat plains. It’s unbelievable watching how powerful these winds were.

    No weather forecast that morning for Iowa. I was working in downtown Des Moines and came out of the building I was in, and saw that sky. Realized my patio umbrella was out so I headed home to lower the umbrella. I had turned onto my street just in time to see the umbrella takeoff, fly over the neighbor's house, and then lost sight of it. I rode the storm out in my truck as well, becoming trapped on the street by tree after tree that fell. But the Derecho was only picking up speed by the time it reached the CR area.

    I would have killed to have driven through that derecho. The derecho made it here to Michigan, but collapsed right around the time it got to me in Lansing (ironically this derecho went through or near three different cities named Lansing).
    In the past I had learned to stay off of limited-access highways in order to make detours easier and reduce the risk of dealing with jackknifed vehicles. However when I hit a derecho on the 80/90 toll road in Indiana, I learned that it’s actually safer in heavy rain, because I can use the rumble strips to replace my ability to see… essentially using echolocation to drive.
    We did have a violent thunderstorm race across Michigan in August 2023 (which I uploaded footage of me driving through), and radar estimates that I drove through 100-110 mph winds. In that situation, I was facing northbound with a west-northwest wind. The rental truck I had at the time did feel as though the wind was trying to push it off I-96. I simply gripped the steering wheel, stayed in the left lane (using the yellow line to help guide me), and kept the left tires on the rumble strips.

    I’m thinking it would be pretty dangerous to turn your vehicle sideways to a 100 mph side wind.

    • @ianmurray2340
      @ianmurray2340 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      yeah your windows could blow out and are not tested for direct high winds like your windshield and doesn't have the impact rating like your windshield. 80+ mi winds + a corn cob doesn't bode well for your side windows.

    • @HRRRisonCater
      @HRRRisonCater  3 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      I had weighed the risks prior. While I wasn't expecting wind well over 100mph, I placed myself intentionally in the lee of a small hill, downwind of a soybean field and away from any lines/trees. Definitely riskier to position sideways (because of that flying debris and window impacts) but I tried to minimize that risk as much as possible. Had I expected multiple gusts in excess of 100mph to materialize, I totally would've faced into the wind.

      @@haydenkruse4520 This area had 15-20 minutes heads up on the sirens, at least on the Linn county side of things. But yeah, they did get them out quick, I do wish they went off a little sooner though, but it’s understandable. They kept going off though, without a break.

    Went to the basement with my son (age 7) 3 min before it hit. Every one of our trees suffered damage, with a few breaking in half. Our house survived but the neighbors lost their garage. It was crazy! We were lucky and only lost power for 3 days. It was an intense 45 min ordeal. I was in Hiawatha

      They wanted good video of the storm. Very dumb. Have vehicle face the wind, like they're designed to do, and turn YOURSELF sideways and record out the side window. I was stuck in my truck dead center of one in 2009. Went to WALMART, faced due west, and rode it out, making sure there were no poles or wires anywhere near me.

    • @HRRRisonCater
      @HRRRisonCater  3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@POWER-LINKS I was expecting 90-100mph winds and probably wouldn't have done that had I known that gusts AOA 120mph would materialize. As I said in another comment though, I took reasonable steps to reduce the risk from flying debris by positioning myself downwind of a soybean field and small hill, over 100yds away from any trees and with no powerlines in the vicinity. Even with the higher than expected winds, I never really felt unsafe

      @@HRRRisonCater I was in Mark Twain Nat. forest, alone no less, for a Banshee rip, and even tho it was still 3 counties away, the air was so thick that I loaded up and went to the nearest public library for a radar check. 3 counties to the west, the radar looked just like a hurricane signature out in the gulf. I think under such conditions it would be a good idea to use manual focus instead of auto because the autofocus always seems to focus on the raindrops on the windshield instead of what's going on in the distance.

    When traveling with a fifth wheel and you hear that wind storm is coming and if possible find the nearest self serve car wash and pull in putting the fifth wheel in the bay as it has the higher profile unless a tornado is in this you should be able to ride out the storm there, once its over you'll be in place to be able to wash the mud and leaves off the truck by backing up 😂 but seriously it's good way to keep from flipping over when 110 mph wind hits you.
