HIGHEST GUSTS: Extreme Iowa Derecho with 120mph winds! August 10th, 2020 -- Fairfax/Atkins

  • This is the lean cut of the highest wind gusts I observed at my location 3 miles south of Atkins in sequential order. The gusts as presented are the best-educated guess based on damage and measured gusts in the area, videos of gusts at the given magnitude, and to a lesser extent, radar data. A 126mph gust was measured in Atkins, 100mph was measured multiple times in SW CR, and also along hwy 30. Linn/Benton counties suffered heavy damage to crops, trees, roofing and outbuildings. Of which, a grain silo ~500 yards from my location was destroyed and rolled 100+ yards across a field.
Why a cornfield and not in town watching damage take hold? Simply put, it's safer. I wasn't willing to jeopardize my car's or my own safety by filming what these winds can do in town, hence the unobstructed winds mowing down a cornfield.

It is truly amazing that weather can be so furious...I am just fasinated by it. I hope to never encounter such weather personally and I feel deeply for the people that did.

the wind must have been very strong. it must be dangerous. if I was outside in this wind, as I am less than 50kg, my parents should have held my hand firmly. but I wouldn't go outside.

Smart call on the open area. I would have done the same had I not been home at the time.

In wind like that, you'll want to aim either the front or back of your car into the wind. Not broadside. Too easy to flip the car.

estimates seem very reasonable, most people say 140mph in this storm

So how does he know the speed of the wind?

I mentioned it in the description but basically used a combination of radar data, damage/measured winds in vicinity, compared against videos at a known wind speed etc. I put quite a bit of effort into trying to ensure that these estimates were accurate.

I'm just not as impressed by these videos when it's just of an open field. Can't really see anything other than rain.

That was not 120mph. Maybe 90 at the most. Your car would’ve been flipped if it was 120.

Straight line winds struggle to flip cars even at speeds well exceeding 100mph. Look at the videos of people driving around in Hurricane Ian’s eyewall. Secondly, the damage survey and multiple obs in the area suggest max winds of 120mph. I wouldn’t have said 120 if I didn’t think that it was.

    • @tvold9204
      @tvold9204 ปีที่แล้ว +1

You must be thinking of tornadoes.
Tornadic wind is different from straight line wind due to tornadic wind having more vorticity and upward motion, flipping cars more easily.
With straight line winds, you usually won't see flipped cars until you start exceeding 160 mph gusts or so.
Think back to hurricanes Charley or Andrew in Florida.
Those storms flipped cars, Charley with a max recorded gust of 174 and Andrew being higher, pretty sure the highest recorded gust in FL with that was 177 but it could've been higher in spots without OBS/with station destroyed.

Straight-line winds rarely flip cars, even at high speeds such as this, even up to 150 mph+. Rotational winds on the other hand -- such as those in tornados or hurricanes -- can flip cars even at lower speeds like 80-90 mph. It can flippantly be called "The Angle Of The Dangle" -- rotation gets *under* and *lifts* objects.
