  • Strongest Derecho in recent history. 100 mile an hour wind speeds in Iowa August 10, 2020. This was like an inland hurricane. the destruction was extremely widespread and bad! This video doesn't really show how bad it actually was. we were so scared. my dad wasn't thinking about showing the trees on the left or the crops in the field on the right but rain was coming in a little from the doors, the van was in the air a few times, even!!! We were driving home feom my grandma's funeral in Wisconsin. My 6 year old niece was with my dad, mom and me, and my pregnant sister, her husband and their other 2 kids were about a mile ahead of us on the side of the road in their car. We were unable to get to them because of a semi that was overturned and taking up the entire road. we had to turn
    around afterwards and were stuck in (i bothink it was Marion, IA) that town for almost 3 hours trying to get out. The power was out EVERYWHERE and we were running low on gas. (2 nights prior to this, me and my bf dog passed away and i wasn't there; then we had to go through this?! This was a bad week, just like its been a really bad 2020!) I'm so thankful that we are all safe! xo

      I think she was doing a great job of keeping everyone else calm. Like comparing the shaking nerves with getting out of a bath, using the bathroom and eating donuts. For an excrutiatingly long storm she was like an angel.

    don't understand why people give these videos thumbs down. Someone's account of a storm, don't like it then don't watch. I am always impressed watching historical storms like this. Only reason I would give it a thumbs down was if she had filmed half the storm with the camera pointed at the floor

    • @LindsAyWithAttitude
      @LindsAyWithAttitude  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks so much... I know it's not the best footage and doesn't even depict it properly, but we were so scared because we weren't from around there and we were just driving through. We also had to think about what to do if we flipped. We had a 6 year old with us and the rest of my family was about a mile ahead. We were preparing and praying more than we were filming.

    I have been binge watching derecho videos. You just said the smartest thing I have heard yet in any of them. Keep your purse close and I put my wallet in my pocket. I remember growing up it being tornado season. If it was still storming at night we could go to bed. BUT..... we went to bed with our shoes on. I have seen countless storm videos where kids and grownups alike don’t have any shoes on! Hey, let’s go walk out of the debris of our house barefooted! Said no one. Keep all valuables in waterproof strong box. When they start giving bad weather put it on the table or somewhere you can grab it fast. Going to the storm pit? Take it before the storm gets here. Common sense people

    • @LindsAyWithAttitude
      @LindsAyWithAttitude  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yea we were trying to be prepared. I got a jacket for each person and Brooklyn had a hat and a pillow and we lifted the screen for the windows in case the glass broke it would help stop some from coming through. We thought it was a tornado so I couldn't unbuckle but I was scared that our luggage and stuff in the back would hit us if we would have flipped or whatever. I didn't really want to die by way of luggage and a cooler.
      I've done the going to bed dressed and with shoes on too. If I could trust my subbasement not to ever get water, I would have a permanent bed down there just in case lol

    You can touch metal all you want inside your car. It's like a Faraday cage, assuming the body is metal and not some composite. Lightning will follow the path of least resistance around the shell of the vehicle to ground. If it weren't, not touching metal wouldn't save you from a lightning strike anyway. It jumped a mile through the air. If it gets inside the car, it sure as hell can jump into you.

Plus, you are no better then they are. At least they are trying to resolve their issues instead of just sitting there and judging others by not minding their own business. What is not any of your business, you have no right to negatively judge them. We don't need wicked "people" around as yourself.

      No, you don’t need to open any windows. If it was a tornado, the tornado would open anything it wanted to, anyway. They use to say open windows to release pressure. But there is enough openings to release pressure. To many people are injured or killed trying to open up windows during a tornado. In a car it would be probably more dangerous to open a window because it would become less aerodynamic. These people did everything correct. It might have been better if they turned into the wind, but as you can see only high profile vehicles were blown over. I hope answered your question.

It took more than a week to clear the roads and travel was difficult. We didn't have the crop damage as you did, because we are mostly an urban area. Lenawee and Monroe counties to our south suffered the most crop damage. Your state suffered more because the storms moved through a lot of farming areas.

You didn't have much or any preparation time. An overpass would have been nice if you could have found one. I hope you found a gass station that had power. Most people don't realize that you can't get gas if there is no electricity for the pump. The station that has an auxiliary power generator can sell a lot of gas.

    That storm is not a tornado but a very strong derecho derecho meaning for the Spanish word straight ahead and that’s what those storms did to be a derecho it has to have consecutive wind gusts of 58 miles per hour for at least 240 miles and damage reports have to come in within 2 hours of each other so you’re experiencing a derecho not a tornado now derechos can have tornadoes in them what you guys are going through is very very strong damaging straight line winds
