  • A derecho occurred in the Midwest which produced widespread wind damage and power outages. This is a severe thunderstorm that went through the Quad Cities metro area. Sorry for the background noise, my grandma was watching Judge Judy.

    We were in the first of 6 lockdowns in Victoria Australia when l came across the warnings for this storm and l was absolutely glued to the screen watching all the videos people were posting.
    Still finding videos l haven't yet seen. It was certainly a biggie!

    0:00 notice how the sound of the siren is warbling. If the wind itself is able to change how the siren's sound sounds...that's when you know it's gonna be bad.

    I drove our Motorhome through this on i80 headed to des moines to visit the in laws. We made it some how and no gas til west des moiines. Fortunately I filled up before we knew this was coming. Still freaks me out. Other campers and semis flipped over on i80.

      I am glad that you made it safely. I can't even imagine how terrifying it would be to get caught in a dreecho while on the interstate. It is crazy that we are only a few days away from the two year anniversary of the derecho.

    The beginning is so eerie. The calmness and partly sunny skies while the sirens are blaring. I live in Western NY and the only siren that goes off is from the firehouses. We had a freak derecho incident just after midnight on Labor Day 98. I’ll never forget the lightning. The wind sounded like a freight train. We’ve had a few severe storms since then but the Labor Day derecho was probably the biggest in my lifetime.

    Weird, looks like there was alot of big breaks in between wind gusts, and little rain with this storm too?

    • @markclayburne5805
      @markclayburne5805  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You are correct. Since the storm was moving quickly, I did not get much rain. However, the damaging winds were a big problem since it caused damage and power outages.

    I live in Moline but I was working in Rock Island, at the time, during the storm. My power was restored the same day of the storm so I was one of the lucky few. My mom and stepdad were out of power for a week in Rock Island.

    Great footage. I have two questions. What is the speed limit in that neighborhood? Not a single car was doing less than 40. Also why are there so many people driving through that neighborhood with the equivalent of a cat 4 hurricane coming in? Bonus question how did the person across the street actually make it into the driveway? At the speed they were going I can only imagine on two wheels.😂

    • @markclayburne5805
      @markclayburne5805  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      1. The speed limit in my neighborhood is 25 MPH.
      2. I honestly don't understand why people were driving when the derecho was approaching. It is not the best idea. Also, can you please not compare this to a category 4 hurricane as this is an inaccurate? Since the wind speeds in the Quad Cities were around 80 to 90 MPH, it is more comparable to a category 1 hurricane and a high end EF0/low-end EF-1 tornado.
      3. The neighbor across the street left as the worst part of the storm moved through which again is not a good idea.

    • @chronically.advocating
      @chronically.advocating 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@markclayburne5805 The only reason I compared it to a Category 4 hurricane is that when it went through Cedar Rapids it had wind gusts of up to 142 mph which is Category 4 strength. There was no way of telling when it entered the Quad Cities proper that the winds had slackened a bit. The other reason for the comparison was how long it lasted and the fact it had these winds throughout the entire duration of the storm rather than just a gust front. Yes in the Quad Cities you had lesser (although still extremely damaging) winds equivalent to a high end Cat. 1, but there was no way of knowing the strength was less by that time.

    • @markclayburne5805
      @markclayburne5805  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@chronically.advocating That is a fair point. Cedar Rapids was hit hard with this derecho and seeing the velocity on radar was just insane.
