Since 1999. Waves was the first time I heard him. He was born in the 90s but he never sounds the like it stylistically.

2015, 7th grade. Can’t remember what song but my best friend and I constantly go back and forth having friendly arguments about who put who onto STEEZ and Joey

For 1999 to be over ten years old, it still is fresh and brand new. Probably my favorite work by him.

People forget how Peep: The Aprocalypse was literally one of the best bodies of work by a rap group.

I remember when I first heard Joey Bada$$. It was on Mac Miller's track "America" off the "Macadellic" mixtape. Casey Veggies was on that track too. Loved Joey's verse on there. It made me look up his material and then I stumbled upon "1999". I was hooked ever since. That was back in 2012, which was an epic year in hip-hop 💯

Discovered bout him in 2012 when survival tactics was played on MTV in a format that gave support to upcoming artists
Artist like Lorde, Charli XCX, Prime TDE, Odd Future, Years and Years, Lana del Rey, Kwabs and many others were fetured here
I was a kid in my grandmother's house, I still lived in a small province Village but It wasn't difficult to understand how much changed since then
Everything that was new in rap, was hardly hated and even Joey, depsite was doing boom bap, was hated without sense by hip hop communities
Glad that everything changed for the Better and that, nowadays, people can find easily more music that marked past generations
It has been a journey until All Amerikkan Badass
Then, I changed my musical references and I listened less lyrical rap
But, at least, 2000 had a personal listen because this man's music Is really part of my childhood
Passions change, but, the things that mark our lives trully return.....

Thinking about it now the early 2010's was an ERA man. TDE, A$AP Mob, Beast Coast, Odd Future, etc. That was a real turning point

Sometime before Joey Badass got onto the 2013 XXL freshman class a homie put me onto the three groups that would ultimately make up Beast Coast-he put me on to Flatbush Zombies and The Underachievers first and then that became a gateway to Joey and then Pro Era as a whole (for context, I was the type who would automatically rock with anyone who floated on boom bap)
Needless to say, watching his growth has been a joy to watch

1999 is my illmatic My boy Brendan had put me on to them when I was at a house party smoking & been hooked ever since 2012-13 Big Dusty & Hard-knock by Joey Bada$$ is a great recommendation if you like boom bap but I definitely loved his work on Mr Robot & Power Series.

Just wish he didn't hold back the albums worth of songs he said he made between the last 2 albums from 2017-2022. He definitely made like 5 albums in that time, each year he said he had like 50-100 new songs and since the release of 2000 he said it had 3 version and 500 songs in the stash. He really missed out on giving the world some of those waves he was on back in those years sitting on it all, especially when he did love is only a feeling and 500 benz, i reckon there was an album around the time of those looseys that would have been dope. He said he had a darker album made around 2019 that didnt come out either. I feel like today with their being an even bigger boom bap renaissance than the one he was a part of over a decade ago, he should return to his orignal style of more intense word play and lyricism like he used to show on the level of steez and ab-soul. He already proved how multi faceted he is, his recent features didnt go hard enough for his older standard imo. 47 comments before this one
