Back in 1968 New Hope Baptist Church in Jersey City NJ had a young vocalist named Sis Earlene Jenkins who led this sound with Professor Vernon Waiters playing organ and Sis Gertrude Hicks was on piano. The churches back then were full of members with their children and grandchildren with them. But on the Sundays that the Youth Choir sang, the church had more teenagers then adults. I miss these songs and the majority of the members from the 60's have gone in different directions. Thank you for posting this. I remembered every word without the caption. I can visualize Sis Earlene dropping her shoulders when she got to the part where it says I'm going to SHOUT and tell my story. All the teens were pattering themselves like her. And we shouted. Indeed we did. I am 68 years old now and there are a hand full of teens at church today. But the memories of where I was raised will never die.

To Billy Preston is great . He was my mentor. We traveled the world and recorded together. My first record deal he did 2 songs with me. I was so honored. I know many in this choir. Some now sleep waiting for the great resurrection as am I. Thank God...for this rich music and these GREAT ARTISTS

I attend and serve God playing the piano now for 20yrs. Yes, praise and worship music is part of ministry but the sermon and fellowship is everything. Praise and worship music has in many ways lost its way serving the world more then serving Jesus. This is why I persistently and faithfully play our oldschool Baptist style hymns such as this in our church and selectively choose some praise and worship songs for our church here and there. A way to keep this alive in the church is to simply ask to sing a song and performing it for the church. Or my favorite, ask to have a midweek ord Saturday praise and worship musical service and select these oldschool songs as the congregational hymns to sing. A brother from a Pentecostal church and I have cooridinated a praise and worship musical service at his church this month and next month at our church. Just singing praises worshiping God. We handled the whole structure of congregational songs and member have enlisted to sing solos and such. We did this 4yrs ago before covid and it was amazing! You can do this to and if you cant because of the unfortunate dictatorship in some churches, pray about it and bring it up to the elders and leaders of the church and participate if you can. I'll start by praying for it now!

I attend and serve God playing the piano now for 20yrs. Yes, praise and worship music is part of ministry but the sermon and fellowship is everything.
Praise and worship music has in many ways lost its way serving the world more then serving Jesus. This is why I persistently and faithfully play our oldschool Baptist style hymns such as this in our church and selectively choose some praise and worship songs for our church here and there.
A way to keep this alive in the church is to simply ask to sing a song and performing it for the church. Or my favorite, ask to have a midweek ord Saturday praise and worship musical service and select these oldschool songs as the congregational hymns to sing.
A brother from a Pentecostal church and I have cooridinated a praise and worship musical service at his church this month and next month at our church. Just singing praises worshiping God. We handled the whole structure of congregational songs and member have enlisted to sing solos and such. We did this 4yrs ago before covid and it was amazing! You can do this to and if you cant because of the unfortunate dictatorship in some churches, pray about it and bring it up to the elders and leaders of the church and participate if you can.
