I think it sounds really full and loud, kind of like hitting a brick wall but not entirely. It captures the airiness in the voice but more of the actual vibration in the throat than the breath. A little cut in the highs and low mids or lows will make it sound much better imo.
This is what I hate about mic reveiws. Nobody reveiws them correctly. I tested this mic in the store next to every shur mic. And this was the only one that pulled my fringy voice out of my face. The only one I didnt have to force my vocals to come out. And the only one I know in a recording booth isnt going to fight my takes every step of the way. And nobody reveiws it with an afi or escape the fate cover with someone who has a simmilar vocal style. I hate forcing my vocals to be louder or more pronounced trying to FIGHT the mic every step of the way. I would kill for a better reveiw.
God knows why the PGA variant of this mic exists - the SM 27 is much more balanced. And its proximity effect is really useful sound for broadcast, 'castage, & naration.
Another awesome video, Bandrew.Funny joke.I find your videos to be best, you’re not technically boring, you are brief and to the point.Keep up the splendid work.👍👍
The PG Alta line of microphones is a hasty attempt by Shure to compete with entry-level mics like the AT2020 and P120. The company didn't offer any affordable condenser back then and rushed to include something similar in their catalogue. Don't buy them. They hold electret capsules with very high self-noise. They may look nice, but they're cheap inside.
The PGA27 is a large diaphragm condenser with lower self-noise (15dB) than any of those mics. The older PG27 had high self-noise (22dB) but it is long gone.
Up All Night I don't trust microphones whose self-noise is not listed in the specifications sheet. Check 1:28. Why did Shure decide to hide this information?
I don't know why it isn't in the spec sheet, especially considering it's a significant improvement over the PG27. Shure is usually very thorough with that. It is posted on their web site though. www.shure.com/americas/support/find-an-answer/pga-condenser-mics-self-noise-specifications
Up All Night weird that they had to disclose those numbers at the request of a user and did not post them before in the main page of the mics. So suspicious...
Thanks for the honest review. I agree with you in everything. I just have to say that I liked better the sound of the acoustic guitar with this mic than the one in your other video testing the KSM32. Regards.
I had the PG27 usb. and it was awesome for 3 years. But it quickly broke, now it creates alot of noise unfortunetly. It's very fragile. Can't use it. :(
I have one too and suddenly started hissing out of nowhere. It randomly starts to generate static white noise while recording! I can't get it fixed either!
What I hate about this reveiw is that people think you need mass low end in order to get a pro recording track done in rock vocals. Rock vocals require a high mid vocal track as oposed to low bassy and constricted sounding microphone. Otherwise it wont lay over the mix right especially if you have a more fringe voice style of vocals. This microphone you are reveiwing is best used in a recording booth over a backing track of heavy metal or rock style lead vocals screamo not recomended. Music is like painting. You have to contrast things just right. And you dont want your lead vocals drowned out because it shares too much bass frequency with drums especially double bass style. Or get lost under the bass guitar. Yes. For someone who does aucustic tracks or pop music or someone with a richer voice or thicker rougher voice its not an ideal mic. But for someone whos voice is more fringe like that of afi, chester benington, creig mabbit, lead singer of the used. This microphone might bode well than that of the sm58. It all depends on how it sounds in a mix. The question remains. Whos voice is this mic designed for... What style... And what purpose and reason was this mic built for as well as how it was designed to sound in the final cut. This is a medeocre reveiw and lays out the basics at best. Sorry bro but I just bought this mic and its better suited for my vocal style and sure sm58 and 57 and even the one that looks like the old elvis mic just doesnt pull my voice in and when I sing harder my voice sounds like shit. For the first time I found a mic that works for me. My voice is soft and hard to pick up because its like chester benington and creig mabbit. Its soft and frengy... I tried small diaphram and all those others and it just drowns my voice in the mix.
2 year old comment but whatever I’ll reply lol, this mic is actually good… I’m coming from buying and selling mics that cost over $1500…. Like you said getting loud with this mic is not good but that’s because how it was designed,,, it can work but I think it’s because it’s “thinner” sounding , with thinner sounding mics they will pick up more room so the louder you get the louder reflections get, but soft vocals this mics phenomenal, another one that’s super good if you like this one is the akg p420, can be a bit sibilant but slightly off axis makes it really nice sounding. If you haven’t checked one out check it. Also I see you say you tried the sm57 and sm58, I like those too but not as much, have you tried the beta57 and beta58? I found those to be quite magical on vocals aswel
I have one too and loved it but suddenly started hissing out of nowhere. It randomly starts to generate static white noise while recording! I can't get it fixed either!
0:54 And I thought we were done with these things but you get a dang sticker. I got one thing to say, Bandrew! Are you the best, so great job on that. :)
how does this compare to audio techica at2035? i want to buy either one of those for voiceovers and streaming mostly, and guitars like 1% of the time.. is there any other xlr mic you would reccomend for 150-230$? thanks for the awesome videos keep us posted!
Would love to see a review of the lewitt lct 240 pro or the lct 440 pure. The 240 is designed to compete with the Audio-Technica AT2035 and I would assume the 440 is designed to compete with the rode nt1.
Do you think Shure PG42 is as bad as this one? I own an AT-2020 and was considering buying the PG42 (I just do narration , not singing nor playing an instrument)
Hey dude, this isnt really related to the video, but whenever I plug my microphone into my neewer phantom power supply, i get an electric hum in the background that wasnt previously there. Is my power unit just bad, or what do you think is wrong?
Look at the hum on a spectrum analyzer. If it's 60hz, and especially if it has harmonic content, that is 60, 120, 240 hz, you have a ground loop or a bad cable somewhere that's picking up power noise. Ground loops can be tricky, because it's caused by something having a better ground than something else. You can confirm by using a 2 prong to 3 prong adapter, but don't run it like that because it's not safe. If the hum is gone with the adapter, odds are the ground is bad on whatever you're plugging it into, or the ground is a different ground than other devices in your system. Best practice is to use a single power strip for all of your devices if you can, so they all are sharing the same ground. If you find that the signal in your spectrum analyzer is just noisy in general, it could be a bad cable. Test with a different cable to confirm. You may also have other devices in your room or on the power circuit in your house that are causing noise. You can confirm by using a different circuit, or taking your setup somewhere outside of your house (like a friends place or work) to confirm. The fix for this is complicated, but can usually be resolved with a nice power conditioner that has ground isolation. That's not a cheap solution however.
Just a question, I know this is the wrong place to put it but. Of all the Microphones you have reviewed and I've watched a lot of them but not all, which is the lesser expensive spoken word Mic that you like? I have the Neewer NW-7000 with the options right now, shock mount, arm and pop filter. I have been doing my channel for 4 months now and I would like a better microphone than my NW-7000, I'm using the Behringer Xenyx X1204USB Mixer and use Audacity or Cakewalk for my DAW on Windows 10 for my audio track. Thanks for you time and awesome video reviews and new types of content, they are great...
I liked the UMC404HD but didn't like the way it worked with its new driver two stereo channels not four channel mono. I will connect the UMC204HD to the 1204X via XLR when I want to upgrade to 24 Bit USB Audio.
Great thanks, Andrew M. Sheppard. What is FWIW? I will look into the CAD E100, I will follow your link and check out reviews on it. I will look right now, thanks again... (Edit) I watched Booth Junkie's review, that microphone does sound very good...
Thank you for your review it is really helpful, however what would you recommend to pick 3 voices in a coral group at the same time? I though this kind of mic would help but not so sure now with your review, can you comment?
Question, What would you recommend for streaming gameplay i'm in Australia and my local shops only have two choices, Either the Rhode NT or the Blue Yeti Blackout edition?
Thank you for your video ! i have a Shure PG27 condenser USB microphone. It's not XLR microphone. I'm about to buy this little red scarlett mixer, but i can't plug my usb microphone into it. So what should i do ? Do i have to buy a new XLR microphone or there are some kind of adapters, mayber from USB to XLR so i have not to buy a new microphone. Thank you !
Review the SM27.. Booth Junkie says he likes it more for radio voice than the CAD E100s. Also a year ago you said you would review the Roland VT-3 which can be used as an usb interface.. I'm still waiting!
For about the same $$$ you could buy a Rode NT1-A. My experience with Rode Customer Service in Sydney is written up in Bandrew's review of that mic. I hope that helps someone...
hi. i know you these recently days, your videos about introdusing mics ablities are so usefull, thx. could you guide me to find budget good mic ? i am 40 years man with alittle deep voice tone, i have rode nt1a for my insta clips (podcast and voice overs, not singing only speek with light back music) nt1a doesnot good for my voice and make compress or bad sounds! before that i hade at2020. and motu m2 is my interface. so whats is your idea about wihch budget mic with warm and manly (aliitle deep) voice is suitable?
If you already have the Rode NT1a, I'd say you don't really need anything else. Picking up a budget mic would likely be a downgrade because the NT1a (although not my favorite sound) is very competent and good sounding for many people. As far as mics that aren't as bright and are affordable, the one that I always recommend nowadays is the sE Electronics V7. It's a handheld dynamic so it's not the bassiest microphone out there but it doesn't have that some upper frequency boost that a lot of dynamics have so it's tame and easy to listen to. For $25 the Behringer XM8500 is pretty good too, but it has its flaws. Check some videos on those mics to see if either fit your description.
@@Podcastage hi again and thx for answer. now i have at2035 as condenser and shure sm57 for dynamic (my room is not well aquestic) they are good for me. but for future i am thinking about tlm103 or at4060a (God willing). i did not know sE Electronics V7 so as it is your recomendation i will try it too (hope it would be good for deep manly voice to record warm emotional voice overs clips) thx again and good luck.
When Shure adds LC to the end of a microphone name, that stands for LESS CABLE, meaning you don't get an XLR cable: www.shure.com/americas/support/find-an-answer/meaning-of-lc-in-a-model-number
@@Podcastage can you listen to my story?? Im voiceover actor and news presenter, I make a home studio and i have blue yeti mic, so I decided to develop my audio devices .. I am confused between : 1- Rode NT USB 2- Shure PGA27-LC with Focusrite audio interface - Which option is better ? - Do you have other options that are better within this budget ?? Thanks very much
For just a little more you can build a U87/47 clone that'll beat the pants off anything you can buy short of 800 bucks or so, provided you can solder and have some patience.
Shure was attempting to take on Rode with this mic, it's not a very good mic for anything other than singing or instruments, they are charging 200 bucks for a mic that has the internals of a sub 100 dollar mic, the AT 2020 sounds better by comparrison
Had this mic for a while now because I couldn't afford anything in the higher price range. To be honest - I really regret buying it. While it works on female vocals, it fails at caputring lower frequencies in a pleasing way. Yes, it is robust and features the built quality you would expect from this brand, but would I buy it again just because of that? No way! If you are just starting out and are looking to buy something that doesn't cost too much, even then I wouldn't recommend it. Either invest in something really nice, or buy something really cheap. I hear great things about almost every single microphone by Suerplux (especially the ribbon one for male vocals) - for the cheaper price range. For "high end cheap" like this mic, but still more affordable I would recommend Rode NT-1A because millions of people and recordings don't lie. Well and if you have the money and use for it, just buy a really good microphone in the 1k range, it will just make you happier. I will try to get my hands on a used Neumann, or JZ microphone (I like their experimental engineering style), but in that price range you will most definitely get a mic that will satisfy.
umm,...yes it does, there literally a button that says "direct monitor" on it, I use it to set the gain levels when I switch mics, just get a 1.5 to 3.5mm adapter and you can plug some cheap earbuds into it
did you say "Plastic" Shock mount ???? No....that is the same shock mount i get with all of my shure mics............. if that's Plastic, then I'm made of Dog shit covered in Mustard and Glitter.
Two years ago your room looked so empty, It’s getting a little crowded in there my guy.
he's been talking about moving his studio to a larger space, what he's in now is basically an extra bedroom
This mic sounded way better than most cheap microphones at guitar center. This mic is way ahead of them its a gem!!!
I think it sounds really full and loud, kind of like hitting a brick wall but not entirely. It captures the airiness in the voice but more of the actual vibration in the throat than the breath. A little cut in the highs and low mids or lows will make it sound much better imo.

PGA27 has RICH presance, just right for voice overs! :)

You have to clean up the diaphragm with alcohol, you will find dust in it that makes the sound bad
I wanted that sticker...

$200?
Put this in a VS series
Yeah! 200 bucks is the price range of A LOT of good microphones
Shure PGA27 Vs Blue Spark
What side mic for that money would you recommend for singing ?
You usually sweep the lows out anyway in mixing for vocals I do anyways
@A D are u being serious? 😂 if so explain

Hi, ¡Which one you prefer, the Shure PGA27 or the AT2020? Please help me.
the shure of course it is double the price but you can compare shure pga to at4040 or rode nt1
A DAMN STICKER AND A JOKE IN THE SAME VIDEO? THIS IS BLASPHEMY!
It's only blasphemous to your nonsensical god. I followed the orders of Lord Pizza.
i actually think the pga181 is just as good for half the price

Review the Peavey PVi2, its a sub 40 dollar dynamic mic that sounds similar to the Shure SM48
would you happen to know the equivalent noise level of this mic?
Yes I'm shure I'm going enjoy this video
key anarchy nice pun but yeah, you shure are right
key anarchy: gonna*
@key anarchy Watch it first. How could you be so Shure before even seeing it? 😂😂
What's the difference between this one and the pg27?.. And can anyone explain to me what's the high end and the low end?
What about using 2 of them as overhead on a drumkit?
Can you do a review on XLR cables?
Hey dude, this isnt really related to the video, but whenever I plug my microphone into my neewer phantom power supply, i get an electric hum in the background that wasnt previously there. Is my power unit just bad, or what do you think is wrong?
Look at the hum on a spectrum analyzer. If it's 60hz, and especially if it has harmonic content, that is 60, 120, 240 hz, you have a ground loop or a bad cable somewhere that's picking up power noise.
That's not a cheap solution however.
wow, thank you for taking the time to write this all out. Ill try your power strip idea first. Again I really appreciate the very detailed response!
You're very welcome my dude, I hope you get it sorted out!

what about the Shure SM27, is it better?
Thank you for your review it is really helpful, however what would you recommend to pick 3 voices in a coral group at the same time? I though this kind of mic would help but not so sure now with your review, can you comment?

hmm, going by price range of around 200 bucks?

@@Podcastage thanks 😍
That just i need to buy xlr cable 😁?
@@Podcastage can you listen to my story??
Im voiceover actor and news presenter,
I make a home studio and i have blue yeti mic, so I decided to develop my audio devices .. I am confused between :
1- Rode NT USB
2- Shure PGA27-LC with Focusrite audio interface
- Which option is better ?
- Do you have other options that are better within this budget ??
Thanks very much
Does it need phantom power?
Yes. It's a condenser microphone and needs phantom power.
200 bucks? that sets it in the price range of many other decent condenser mics actually
Why did bro do the sticker like that lol
Imagine you don't get a mic in the box?
5:15 - Actually I subscribed because of the joke; next good joke I become a member.🤣
Excellent... Thanks... Highs
I will try to get my hands on a used Neumann, or JZ microphone (I like their experimental engineering style), but in that price range you will most definitely get a mic that will satisfy.
do video for shure pg 42 xl please bro
5:21 I actually laughed, that was a really good joke.
do PGA181
You get a boomy sound cause your room is literally a box.
Well it Shure seems like they missed the boat on that Mic.................. :)
this mic is not for your voice
Ooo yes
can you review the behringer u phoria umc 202 hd plssssss
He reviewed the 204HD. They're basically the same except the 202HD lacks mono zero latency monitoring and has no MIDI inputs.
he already did, the 204HD is pretty much the same thing
umm,...yes it does, there literally a button that says "direct monitor" on it, I use it to set the gain levels when I switch mics, just get a 1.5 to 3.5mm adapter and you can plug some cheap earbuds into it
The UMC202HD is stereo only zero latency monitoring. The UMC204HD has both mono and stereo.
#returnofthesticker
did you say "Plastic" Shock mount ???? No....that is the same shock mount i get with all of my shure mics.............
if that's Plastic, then I'm made of Dog shit covered in Mustard and Glitter.
the joke was so cringy that i was laughing for hours 😂
It's markipliers old microphone
before he picked up Blue as a sponsor and they sent him a Blue Spark
I'm guitarist
Way too bias. Not enough research, and you dont know what this mic was designed for. You misunderstand this mic.
Explain about that please, I was about to buy
it, but with this video made me doubt
Dang stickers! Lol.
that joke was really bad that I laughed 😂
Looks good, must be good.
its not, it's overpriced for what it is, and the internals are cheap, its basically an AT-2020 clone at twice the price
Pg27 and pg42 were better
Insert Shure puns here ^
