Modern Wall Baseboard - 4 ways

  • In this video I discuss four modern design attitudes toward the baseboard design and detailing in residential architecture.
    They are: no base, reveal base, flush base, and the applied base. Baseboard protects a highly trafficked (and abused) part of the home and covers the messy joint between the finished wall and floor. This collection of modern base details highlights the aesthetic language of modernism: functional, spare, humble, minimalist and expressive.
    Thanks for watching...

    As a design-build contractor, I enjoyed this presentation. Adding a still frame showing a sectional drawing of each of the variations on theme you discuss, either immediately before or after each narrated photo section, would enhance the video.

    With the incredible advancement of LED lighting I think these baseboardless options are a great opportunity for hidden lighting opportunities. Your design ideas offer a really nice launching place for executing this idea. Thanks for your contributions.

    Thanks for posting this very informative and helpful video. My teenaged self would have laughed at the idea that someday I'd be fascinated by a baseboard video, but I digress. Neither Husband nor Contractor have ever even heard of a baseboard-free home, so I've been vetoed out of the idea, but it's great to know there are options that technically involve applying baseboards, but still look very modern, minimalist and sharp. So grateful for your help!

    Great video! I just used some Trim-Tex reveal bead on some inset baseboards and they turned out phenomenal. Very time consuming to get it all laid out and mudded. But well worth the unique modern finish that you get. -Paul

    For a flush no baseboard look like a gallery, having drywall come down to the floor, maybe we can use a corner or L bead similar to fastened and mudded on to the drywall(horizontally between finished floor and drywall, and then the lower section you can paint it a slightly darker color. I like the look without shadows. Its what throws people off and not get what looks different. The shadow still creates a separation.

    Thanks for this video. I'm presently installing my 2nd project with flush mount baseboards and have done it differently both times and already know next time will be slightly different. This detail takes forethought!

    Hi, can the 1/8" small reveal be filled with flexible acrylic caulk, so it allows some wall movement while offering water protection?
    How about applying a thin coat of invisible water repellent sealer in lieu of a baseboard? We're considering a baseboardless kitchen, but I'm afraid of mopping the floor.

    To do a reveal around a door, is it as simple as specifying a "F" shape reglet that butts up to the door jamb. Or do you have to order a door with a 1/2" deeper jamb on both sides? What brand would you recommend for most cost effective?

    If you have traditional distemper on the walls of your old house, like I do, you will discover why people invented the skirting board, (what you are calling base board). Mop the floor and the distemper simply lifts off the base of the wall.

    Wondering how flush base could be used/installed in a remodel with out removing all the drywall.

      +Tommy Alan Raines is it possible to apply another layer? Door /window jambs will take extra care, but sheetrock is inexpensive...

      There is 2 houses I am considering to purchase, with one of them putting another layer of dry might work and with the other house it may even be best to rip it all out and put new stuff up.

      +Tommy Alan Raines I see the answer to this question lies below. Were you able to apply this technique in a remodel? If so, what was the process? Did you have to apply a second layer of drywall?

      +Kyle Johnson Will be instead using the flush base in new construction. A few contractors also said for retro fitting they would cut 1-2 feet of the lower drywall out and install the new with the flush base. they also said doing this would allow electricians to update wiring easier as well

    Hi Eric, love your videos and articles.
    What's the difference between the No Base, and the Reveal, since you state that the no base has a small reveal? And why does the drywall have to be finished as it already has a finished edge (as long as it's not cut)? Can't you just tape the vertical joins and paint?
    Also do you have to install the flooring first so you can sit the drywall on top of it?
    Thanks for all the great info.

    • @30by40
      @30by40  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The small reveal that's necessary with the 'no base' option is a function of allowing the wall and floor to move independently. The floor will move with seasonal humidity changes. With this detail, the bottom edge of the drywall is raised above the finished floor by a small amount. The gap that's created is approx. 1/8" so technically a 'reveal' but not as pronounced or clean as the reveal base which uses an extruded component to create it. The reveal base ranges from 1/4" to 2" and above.
      Most drywall sheets are installed perpendicular to the studs with the long axis running horizontally (many good reasons for doing this: structural stability, evens out irregular studs, joint height is easier to finish, etc.) Doing this leaves the beveled edge at the bottom of the wall which needs to be finished. If you run the sheets vertically - as perhaps you're suggesting - I suppose it's possible, although a vertical installation (for a standard ceiling height) will result in more joints to tape and mud.
      I wouldn't recommend installing the finished flooring before the drywall finishing takes place...too much of a mess. You can use spacers to set the bottom of the sheets at the desired height.
      Good luck...cheers...!

      Thanks, that all makes perfect sense, I didn't know drywall mounted horizontally and was forgetting about the bevel. I'll just make sure I know what I'm using for flooring before getting the drywall done so I know what space to leave. Keep up the great work!

      I plan on doing nothing but drywall to a concrete floor. I figure we pour the floor, seal it with something with 1/2 pigment, protect it, frame everything, install drywall 1/8” from floor with shims, paint, done.
      How wrong am I? Thanks for the videos!!!
      I recently stayed at a house with this detail and the paint went down to a finished wood floor. So awesome.

    I am using wood flooring and was wounding how to deal with the expansion gap that is usually covered by the baseboards?

    • @30by40
      @30by40  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Benjamin Conn here's one option: www.pinterest.com/pin/176695985358190267/
      The other is to rely on the thickness of the wall finish to conceal the gap, this will mean keeping your wall finish close to the finished floor. Hope that helps...

    Hello, we just finished a project with d300 metal bead finish around doors, windows and baseboards...there are some minor imperfections on the corners where we cut on a 45 degree angle, but some of the corners have a small gap. should we get putty used for window trim to cover the edges to make a clean finish?
