As a Washingtonian, I got super excited when they were talking about the San Juans! I am sure Ariel’s grandparents made a lot of money off the house though, because property on really any of the islands is really, very expensive.

For brain exercise, there have been studies that show that learning a second language during adulthood can exercise your brain and delay dementia. That being said, learning a second language is hard AF and lowkey the only thing keeping me going is sunk cost fallacy LOL.
I'm refreshing my second language with duolingo as solidarity with my niece and nephew to start learning their second language and it's definitely working the brain..backwards 😆 Have to dumb it down a bit. But if I change my perspective, l'm working my brain more by translating it twice? 😅
It's okay! You can do it. Since learning a language is so gradual, and never has a true ending, anything you've learned up until now is actually great (I'm assuming that if sunk cost fallacy is factoring into it, you've learned more than just, like, "hello" and stuff lol). What language are you on the road of discovery for?

For a while I was diligent in practicing my kanji everyday, but I fell off that bus a few months ago and now I've forgotten a lot of it. And the other hard part is listening. I can mostly understand when someone speaks slowly, but most people talk so quickly... So one part of me is like "you can converse! isn't that good enough?" and the other part of me is like "reading is a huge part of language acquisition and you need to get back to practicing". My brother started learning a few years before me, and it's hard not to compare myself to him. For a while we were having daily conversations, but then I got into this funk and we stopped. Plus, a part of me is very unsure of the end goal of learning Japanese. At first, it was kind of just to prove that I could? I felt so useless at everything I did, that I decided to try something kind of left field. But now it feels like I'm dedicating time and money to a worthless skill.
@@seqka711 Um, so I live in Japan! 😂 For 6 years, now... you're right, it's HARD. It's just... everything is so high context... so you have to learn everything, but for like each individual situation... sigh. You know just what I'm talking about! But frustration aside, it's definitely one of those "worth it" languages, in my opinion. For one, if you don't speak Japanese, you'll be pretty miserable if you're ever here (don't know if that's part of any kind of end goal for you), since most Japanese can't speak English at all. And it opens up a totally different way of communicating and thinking. I don't know if it's helpful, but if you want to keep going, then what about setting yourself goals like getting your N3, N2, JLPT, etc. (depending on your level now)? I ran into a huge rut myself when I had reached the stage of "being able to do anything I wanted in daily life" and only really upped my game again once my husband and I were having a baby, because my daily life changed dramatically at that point (I'm still learning how to do things for babies, preschool stuff, pediatrician stuff, etc.). But yeah, having new motivation was a huge boost to my language skills. But if you want to stop where you are, just know that you're probably 1000x better than a lot of people who even live here, since you've taken actual lessons. With language, the nice thing is that anything "lost" from lack of use tends to come back pretty quickly and easily with more practice. It's okay to stop if you want! But if it feels like it's the thing that you're truly proud of (since you say you felt useless at other things), then... I think you should keep going. If you'd be curious to live here, then that can be an end goal. If you know you want to stay near your family, wherever you are, then you could become a translator, even as a career. If you're not already part of one, you could join a Japanese community center or sth, and help Japanese people integrate there, if they're new arrivals... and of course, you can enjoy all sorts of media content without having to worry about subs lol! I hope you don't feel useless or sad about the things you have or haven't accomplished. It's all a journey, and you're doing interesting and useful things, from what I can see even just through a youtube comment. So, I think you can feel good about it.
I don't think I've ever seen a person as sincere as Ariel onscreen, and hardly ever in reality. You can see how keenly and fully she listens and gets involved, its completely magical

Aaahhh the grandparent stories. :') I actually cared for my grandma the last few months she was alive which was in quarantine last year. I cooked so much for her and baked anything she wanted. She had memory issues and the eye issue Maggie's grandma has, so I'd get called by my mom's name instead of mine a lot. I made her last birthday cake! Yellow cake with chocolate frosting. She got to see me graduate from college in her living room (otherwise she wouldn't have been able to attend my graduation. Driving two hours to my university would have been waaay too much for her). Made the last meal we'd ever have together on the morning before I left. I took care of her like she took care of me when I was six months to one (mom was recovering from a big surgery and dad worked full time). We drove each other crazy during that time, too! Regardless of the hard time, I look back at 2020 fondly because of that sassy little lady. Next time you see your grandmas, give them a squish! I gave mine the biggest hug before I left.
I had to put down a pet today and this is a great part of my day. Thanks yall for being yourselves. Edit: I s2g I didn't skip ahead, I didn't know they were going to talk about putting pets down. Last time I cried was 2 minutes ago LOL

Brain exercises like the apps have been recently shown not to work but, learning languages does actually help. There is also the old adage of use or loose it in aged care, in most cases if an elderly person stops doing something for themselves they loose the ability to do it. The most extreme example being when someone goes into hospital for an extended period they become institutionalised and are no longer able to care for themselves even the basics because someone’s done it all for them in hospital.
San Juan Islands are their own thing! Also, does anyone else think about how Wes and Finn wouldn’t have had any biological uncles, but they were lucky enough to be born with three uncles anyway 🥺 YES RACHEL! I would have done a Shakespeare monologue too! (Also emailed 2nd Try about doing a collab with the Shakespeare company I help run, please let’s do it someday, this story makes me want to do it even more now)
