Woodturning Cross Grain Bowl With Matching Lid

    This piece of elm has been underfoot in my shop for several months. Another club member harvested it some unknown time ago and sealed the ends with latex paint. It feels dry.
    After rounding, I parted off the top two inches of wood to serve as the lid. Making a lidded bowl is essentially two projects in one: the base bowl and the lid bowl plus a abbreviated finial aka a knob.
    My lidded bowl set is about 5 inches in height and 9 inches in diameter finished with walnut oil. The knob is walnut.
    Enjoy!

    Well there’s nothing else to say besides WOW ANOTHER BEAUTIFUL PIECE. The best part of this video was the knob. It showed a beginner like me that even PROFESSIONAL? turners even have difficulty with what seems a simple part. Thank you for showing us those issues. I myself learn by watching . And seeing you struggle with a project and sticking to it and not giving up is a great lesson learned. Please continue teaching us.

    That s one beautiful turn. I stopped cross grain, with lids, because of the expansion. I made a large box but was always fighting the top fitting the bottom. A bowel is one thing but making a top for it is quite another. lol

      For a cross grain project, I make sure the wood is dry and make a very loose joint. Trying for a suction or tight fit is a guarantee of a problem when humidity changes.
      Try again!

    Love it ! Just starting out how deep should a tendon be is there some kind of math for it compared to the diameter? .......THANKS. ...John

    • @AsWoodTurns
      @AsWoodTurns  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      First, let's distinguish between a tenon and a tendon. This is difficult for many woodturners. A tenon is frequently used with a mortise to join wood. A tendon is connective tissue in the body that gets torn in football. :)
      A tenon is a cylinder protruding from a surface - A mortise is a hole in the surface.
      Diameter should be close to the diameter of the chuck jaws. Large projects would indicate larger chuck jaws. For most of my work up to 8-12 inches, I use my standard jaws.
      Height depends on wood strength, tail stock support, and skill. 1/4 to 1/2 works for me. Less on special occasions.
      Hope this helps.
