“Where Is The Clown?” - Judy Garland

  • A criminally underrated and haunting performance of Judy Garland’s was “Where Is The Clown?”, which was never completed for the finale of her CBS show in 1964. The song was written by Billy Barnes with Judy in mind. Though not physically impressive, she choreographed this by herself, in a rare segment of public vulnerability.
** I do not own this recording. **

Wow!!! Judy Garland was SO amazing. She doesn’t even sing this number, yet her performance is so absolutely captivating! There was nothing she couldn’t do. Truly an entertainer’s entertainer. I wish she had lived many more decades. She left us way too soon. Wherever her beautiful soul is now, I hope she’s experiencing such beautiful peace. I love you, Judy Garland!

It always amazes me how a lot of entertainers be it in the music field, television, movies or art had so much sadness and grief in their lives yet their genius shined through. I often wonder if that emotion, that angst fueled their greatness. Anyway Judy was truly a legend who we'll never see the likes of again.

Amazing ! Thank you for releasing this to the world.
To see this and know that she herself choreographed it is another proof of Judy's instinctual talent and genius.
I understand why this may not have ever aired on television; it was simply too "high art" for the public and cetainly not what they expected for "entertainment" while they drank their beer in front of the TV.

I hate to say, but it's as if she can see ahead to the desperation of her next few years (and there were only a few) Yet it is still fascinating to watch her work her way through the possibilities of this piece and she brings her brilliant broken heart to the party.

Thank you so very much for gifting such a rare & special piece! What a classy, beautiful, poignant piece of art from our beloved Frances Gumm on yet another meaningful & stellar stage that, as always with Judy, reaches in deep to hearts to caress & break them, and without one note sung nor word spoken .......aaahhhhhh. She was/is/will always be a gem! In 1967, as a child of 11 years, I got to see her in person at NYC's Palace Theatre........yes!!!! My beloved mother adored her and introduced her to me lovingly via not only Oz, of course, but via that extraordinaryly-talented, hilariously-funny, open-hearted, chew-up-the-stage-and-leave-not-one-dry-eye, ballsy-yet-classy entertainer woman on Sunday night tv. Such tragic abuse, exploitation, & neglect as a gifted child, resulting in a most-troubled & disturbed, albeit a fighter for sure, adult! I agree with other posters that this lovely exhibition of yet another superlative aspect of Judy's gifts should most defintiely been part of her final tv show. Those jealous, sexist, ugly-in-spirit and/or unappreciative CBS behind-the-scenes bigwigs were so disrespectful, stupid & clueless in their treatment to one of the world's greatest entertainers who needed a place to lay her overworked, ravaged, troubled professional & personal head for a most-deserved & well-earned respite! As many of us that love her dearly are thinking watching this sweet & heart-wrenching morsel of well-choreographed/performed beauty, within 5 years those ravages of abuse, misuse & psychological-physical unwellness would take her from so many hearts and arms that desired a loving balm for her soul.

Was interpretive dance even done then? The brilliance. It’s hard to describe, but it’s like an “understanding” of sorts that Judy had on a very deep level. You can’t teach this.

The edited version of "Where is the Clown" should have been allowed to air along with the closing song of "Here's to Us" as the finale of the show. Judy was wonderful that night! Despite the fact, that she was traumatized by the cancellation of her show and her hope of financial security. She had worked non-stop, for four years, and made huge amounts of money which "disappeared". She wanted to obtain financial security for herself and her children. Begelman and Fields had built their office on her name and attracted big-name clients by resurrecting Judy in show business. They used her, stole and embezzled from her, double-billed her, and left her in financial straits. They were absent for her final taping. They were attending Barbra Streisand's opening in "Funny Girl" When the film 'Funny Girl" opened in 1969 Barbra got well-deserved raves. At that time, Judy got booed and pelted with breadsticks, rolls, and cigarette packs at "The Talk of the Town".

I've read all the books and it's absolutely tragic what they did to her. But in Lufts book he warned her about them. At some point we're responsible for ourselves. All she wanted was to work, all that other stuff let the men handle it. It's her fault too.

Thanks for re-posting this! There was another, longer clip (about 18 minutes) of "Where is the Clown" which was out here on TH-cam some years back. This one involved "re-takes" and director discussions with Judy (on her questions) which mostly involved her physical movements in relation to the camera, etc. For those who have said that Judy was not "fully aware" during the taping of her last Show (of the Garland television series) need to look up the extended clip.

This was supposed to be on Judy's last TV show, but instead there inserted numbers from her previous which was a terrible mistake. She also was supposed to sing her LAST SONG on the show called . "Here's To Us". But as most of us Judy fans know the CBS executives screw -up "The Judy Garland Show ". I hope the box set of The Judy Garland Show is still available . I have it of course and it has ALL of the deleted stuff on the DVD's. This and other numbers are on them of course .

Where is the clown?- is a very strange clip of Judy Garland performing as a clown all dressed in a completely white outfit with her face painted no sing of her own just going threw the motions of a clown silently on stage. Not one of my favorite performances of her national talent like singing where she blows the roof off the venue she's singing at on stage sometimes with one song.
