Glenn Close is one of the all time greats. So incredibly talented and in my opinion, underrated. There’s something very regal about her as a person. She’s legendary
Wow - I never knew Glenn Close could sing - and so beautifully. She really *is* Desiree in this performance - haughty, painfully and ironically self-aware, too self-controlled to cry, and almost amused by her own foolishness, yet aching on the inside. She ends with a glimmer of hope. She really lives this performance. Bravo.
This lady should always be included when discussing the best of the best. It shouldn't always be the Meryl Streep show. Glenn Close IS the absolute best. Love her so talented, so multi faceted.
Tracy Parker Glenn and Meryl offer very different strengths as actresses, but they are both phenomenal legends. They are the Liz Taylor’s of our generation!
@@rickyricardo113 First of all, both Streep and Close are very close friends and have been for forty years. They even appeared together in "House of the Spirits" and won critical acclaim. Close has always been considered the premiere STAGE actress, while Streep gave up theater very early to focus on film. Both are so great and possess talents so overwhelming that their careers are the envy of all American actresses.
Think about it. This is the same woman who perfected her roles in Fatal Attraction, Dangerous Liaisons, and 101 Dalmatians... but she can do this. Sing a song to perfection, and make us go somewhere we never thought possible. Glenn close is a true iconic actress AND singer. The best ever. Love her.
The Actress. That generation that were versatile, able to sing, dance, play, live both on stage and on silver screen. God, I hate to say that, but I see no such talents in Hollywood today
I saw her walking down Broadway, dressed like a moviestar walking her two little toy dogs. You don't speak to them when you see them but it's something you never forget. Glen Close is an arts icon.
+JON D. ELDER YUP! I have to agree with you. Even though she is not a big belter, she GETS the meaning of this song. She does more for the song with her facial expressions and hand gesture than a big voiced singer could do by holding notes for a long time.
This is by far the absolute best rendition - out of many - of this timeless classic. I’m a retired music teacher and musician and, in my opinion, she embodies the song, although Sondheim wrote it specifically for Glynis Johns. THIS version brought me to tears. Bravo Glenn Close!
Just a short while ago I read about the passing of Glynis Jones for whom this song was composed. Then I came across Judy Dench’s rendition of the same song during a London stage performance: I had teary eyes. And then Glenn Close: what a powerful, perhaps a bit too upbeat, interpretation of this timeless song! What a wonderful start to a day. Rest In Peace Glynis Johns!
Actually, I think Glenn Close is the only one of the 3 who can sing. Having said that, I’ve seen all of the performances and all of them are magnificent in their own way. However Judy
Any actress who's won THREE Tony Awards and FOUR Emmy Awards can hardly be considered "underrated". Close has had a career on the stage and in the movies that is second to none. Meryl Streep is a great friend and admirer of hers and is one of her biggest fans and supporters.
It's not just her singing voice, it's that she sings it as if she is talking to him, with such resigned regret, if that is the right term. She really acts the song. What a wonderful job!
God, this performance is a Masterclass. Chills. What skill, and nuance, and intelligence, and pathos....the self-deprecating bitter irony, nailed it totally. Glorious. I had no idea about this side of Glenn Close. Bravo.
Oh I did. I became aware of Glenn Close magnificent singing ability ability when she made a movie with the actor Mandy Patinkin I believe in 1985 the movie called "MAXIE" and in the movie Glenn Close sing a wonderful rendition of the song of the "Bye Bye Blackbird". And the movie is all out fun and captivating and I highly suggest you watch it or Google it.❤
"Send in the clowns Don't bother, they're here.." Goosebumps. I mean, that line has so much impact in me. That the singer realized that, all this time, they are the clowns.
This is a superb and my favourite rendition of this poignant song. Glenn Close inhabits the song, she fully understands its tone of resignation and as an actress she conveys the role of the character from A Little Night Music. This stands streets above the awful Frank Sinatra version (the man had obviously not seen A Little Night Music as he says its about a couple who have been together for years but are breaking up...) and indeed I think the Julie Christie version has none of the steel here. I need hardly mention that stunning gown she was wearing. This whole tribute concert to Stephen Sondheim was a mark of how esteemed and cherished this genius of musical theatre was. He wrote to me some kind words in his usual self-deprecating style after I had written to express my gratitude for all he had done. That letter is one of my treasure possessions.
I agree Close is superb in this song. But so too are Vaughan, McRae, Lee, Burnett, Dench, Laine and some others. I find it so hard to say which I love most - let alone which is the best. Vaughan stuns me the most (in the version where she sings part of the song a capella); Lee moves me the most.
it's also criminal tha Meryl Streep is getting all the musical parts. as wonderful as Meryl is, I think Glenn would have been phenomenal in Into the Woods
I am a HUGE Meryl Streep fan. like a huge huge fan...but honestly I never even thought of Glenn playing the witch and I would have loved to see that....I would love to See Glenn in a movie musical soon.
well, good actress/actor never complained about not winning a trophy. look back to old stars who never won but the names are immortal. there are (many) oscar winners that we hardly remember. do something to win is just not right. just do something best no matter what the outcomes.
My favorite part of this is that while she obviously songs it perfectly, the really unique thing is you can see in her delivery/acting the bitterness and sadness that makes this song so gorgeous
Wonderfully acted, and she really has a fine voice. I'm always fascinated to see different interpretations of this song. Hers is sort of bittersweet. As if she's disappointed by what has happened, but not surprised. She comes across as one who looks at life with a sad, wise smile.
The look on her face at the end as the spotlight dims out just breaks my heart and makes me cry like a baby. Such a beautiful touching yet sad rendition. Great job, Miss Close!
I thought that Dame Judi Dench's version was the unbeatable perfection. I have never, EVER imagined Glenn Close had such a beautiful, powerful singing voice... left me speechless.

A very strong, clear voice sung with great feeling! I had the pleasure of seeing and hearing the incomparable great Glenn Close performing in the hit Broadway show, "Barnum" in the early 1980s before she became the legend she is today! Another great Broadway show that should be performed more than it has been with gorgeous lyrical songs says this lifelong pianist and composer of an American folk opera which has been performed in public in New England. I have a quote to paraphrase the late great Sondheim, '''creating art is easy, it's financing it that's hard"! So true! Thanks BestArtsSondeim!
I remember the first time I came across this video -- It was about two years ago. Ever since then, I've never gotten over how perfect Glenn's performance of the song is. She looks so paralyzed by disappointment and hurt that all she can do is cover it up with a smile. Some women who sing this song just cry to prove to the audience that they're "such good actresses" that they can cry on demand, but Glenn shows us nothing but the truth.
It is THIS performance that had brought me finally to the stage in which i understood the song completely! Thank you Glenn Close for your outstanding performance!
One of the very best versions of a song that has been done by SO MANY singers. Glenn Close really gets this song. She knows exactly what the song is saying and she gets that message across SO beautifully even though she is not a singer first. She relays the true message of the song with her face, hand gestures, posture and lastly with the rising and falling of her beautiful voice. Just look at her face when she sings the line "losing my timing this late, in my career". She is the bewildered lady, scratching her head and wondering what has happened to the love she thought would always be around and the spell she thought she'd always have over him. She really does beat A LOT of the people who have taken a whack at this song. My personal favorite, for sure!
especially the end when she said, "maybe next year" with a look on her face and her eyes that said, "I hope but I know it won't happen" and her pride keeping her from crying. makes me cry.
Song from the 1973 musical A Little Night Music. Glenn performed in 1993 Carnegie Hall, a celebration of Stephen Sondheim's music. Had listened to Judy Collin (Grammy Best Song 1976), Sinatra, Striesand, Sarah Vaughn & others. But, WOW! This is a wonderful interpretation by Glenn. Just found it, after I thought I'll give the actresses (also Judi Dench) a hearing. I love Glenn's low-pitched vocal, singing with so much emotion and sadness in a heartfelt lament. Tq TH-cam for the varieties. Always finding gems.
Her rendition seems simple but only because of her incredible talent. Few if any others can match the perfection of this performance. She almost makes it look easy. But that's the work of a consummate talent. Brilliant!
