No one compares to the legend that is Judy. From the moment I heard her voice as a young boy I was enchanted. It was "Over the Rainbow" that won me over. She was like this magical dream gone way too soon. Every time she sang, she would take you on this journey to a universe of her making. Enchanting, timeless, beautiful that is Judy Garland.

Judy always delivers, gives 1000% to every song -- dramatically emoting, as melodically vocalizing. She becomes the character singing the dramatic monologue, always believably and sympathetically. She connects to a universal human heart.

Her facial expressions are priceless & even her flubbed lines make her even more endearing to Us. She is always so comical when she makes mistakes and she also has a keen ear when she misses her mark or a beat. One time it was one tiny error & if she didnt mention it, no one would have noticed. Being the professional and perfectionist that she was, just shows us that she never cheated her audiences. Thanks for posting this.

I think CBS should have made her show a monthly special. Paid her a lot of money and made sure she took care if herself. You respect a talent like this, not exploit it.

    • @jmmj8795

      "TrangPak2:
"I think CBS should have made her show a monthly special. Paid her a lot of money and made sure she took care if herself. You respect a talent like this, not exploit it."
I disagree. Nobody should exploit anybody else, but Garland thrived under pressure, and -- believe it or not -- NOBODY, including CBS, could have made her "take care of herself". She wasn't that kind of performer (and neither is her daughter Liza, although that's about the only thing they have in common); she always gave everything she had into everything she did. She COULD NOT have lain back and coasted through ANY kind of TV series -- weekly, monthly, or annual -- the way somebody like Andy Williams or Barbra Streisand would.
She gave the best performances she ever gave in the 26 episodes of The Judy Garland Show. It was intense, and it was grueling, but her whole life was grueling. She always charged straight into the challenge -- whatever it was at the time -- and rode triumphant over it, as she did in this amazing one-season TV series.
She would have gotten bored with a monthly special, and audiences would have drifted away. Her "thing" was already outdated in 1964, and she couldn't have competed for American TV viewers through the sea changes of the 1960s.
If she HAD had a monthly special, the only ultimate difference would be that the world would not have this amazing, breathtaking, unprecedented and STILL unequaled, perfectly performed and recorded, almost totally live collection of songs covering the ENTIRE career (and then some) of the greatest singer who ever lived -- recorded at the very peak of her abilities.
The Judy Garland Show -- exactly as it is -- is by far the best thing Judy Garland ever did. Nothing in show business, before or after, compares with it. No other singer has left such a complete and perfect legacy to the world. She wouldn't change anything about it, and neither would I.

TrangPak2 Hollywood and Media in general is literally solely about exploration of a person with talent. There's a hundred leeches and fake friends and agents and security and a million hands out for their cut and they don't give a fuck how far they drain someone to get those performances out of them.

Hollywood shoved drugs in her from the time she was 12 yrs old. Her own stage mother shoved the pills down her as well. Hollywood used her and abused her. She needed to be loved and helped. Hollywood didn't give a damn about her and would shove any drug they could in her to get her to perform. Judy was an addict by the time she was 13. Hollywood drugged all the child actors back then and they probably still do. Hollywood is full of drug pushing/child molesting/raping directors and producers. That has never changed. Judy had nobody to stand up for her. Judy was a beautiful and talented lady. We the fans loved her and God loved and still loves her. RIP dear sweet Judy. You were and still are loved.

Though I own the complete TV series and Love it, the specials as well, can it be any wonder why it was so hard on Judy. No teleprompters like they have nowadays so that a lyric isn't flubbed. She was Raw and talent personified. Used and abused by so many around her it's a wonder she lasted as long as she did. Not tragic, just burnt out by the machine that grinded her into submission. To think that if she'd never seen a pill, smoked a cigarette or drank in abundance, she might even now be here. in her 90's. WOW... so much to hope for in the next life to see a talent such as this.

@@jimduffy1967 I think you should do a bit more investigating. Everybody blames the studio for getting her started on the pills when actually it was her mother in vaudeville. Even Mickey Rooney admitted to taking them during that early early times. Also, check sources, sex mad dwarfs is a story SHE told and everyone knows how she would elaborate an experience, if for no other reason than to make it funny. Don't get me wrong, I love JG to this day; have for 60 years but God bless her, she wasn't perfect as none of us are. I feel it reduces her greatness to put her on a a pedestal. I have loved Judy Garland since the first time hearing the beautiful "Over The Rainbow" in the Wizard of Oz. I was less than 10 in the early sixties when that movie made an impression on me. Seeing this footage kind of breaks my heart, as I realize this appears to have occurred not long before her demise. I was absolutely heart broken when I saw a documentary regarding how studios treated her in her latter years (allegedly). However, I have never, nor will I ever lose respect for her. These clips are merely reminders of off days EVERY artist (and every person that breaths for that matter) has in life. There was just no camera pointed at ours forgetful moments. Judy could do no wrong artistically.
So what, she forgot a few lines. I forget where I put my car keys every other day. God bless Judy Garland.

I know this comment is four yrs old but I agree with you. You have to look at the cut of the clothing that she wore. Some times clothing isn't very flattering, I don't care who the designer is. You know Cary Grant was gorgeous but he also had a "hunchback" for real. But his tailor was immaculate. And this DPs always knew how to film him. The only times you are really aware of Cary's hunchback is briefly in his upper torso nude scenes. There's one in North By Northwest and one in Father Goose to name a couple.

Judy was at her best in Meet me in Saint Louis, in A star is born of course... and in the cabaret numbers like A couple of swells with Fred Astaire and in To be a clown with Gene Kelly... while acting, dancing and singing at the same time... She had to use the whole package of her enormous talent and profound soulful, sensitive wisdom to show her genius in its full glory. I went "OH NO!" when she flubbed one single lyric in an otherwise excellent performance of Just in Time. Anyone else would have continued, but not Judy. She spent herself for her audience. And how apologetic she is every time she makes a mistake. Today's 15-minute stars should have a lot to learn from these giants.

acintoli the first thing you're taught in any form of performance is to NEVER STOP WHEN YOU MAKE A MISTAKE. You always just dance or sing through it. She just cut the end of the song, she didn't stop performing

Kitana Kojima live performance- yes. Recording for a tv show is different, especially since her show wasn’t heavily edited.

I refer to her as the Maria Callas of the Great American Songbook She is a consumate actress who happens to be delivering her lines within the structure of a song. She does not present or perform the lyrics, she embodies them emotionally.

It appears that Judy did not rely on a teleprompter to feed her the lyrics to songs, some which she likely sang more than a few times. It's a lot to ask of anyone to remember every word. One has to remember that even megastars like Barbra use a teleprompter to get through an entire concert. Looking this way and that while she sings, it is slightly noticeable. Still, it does not detract from the product.

Did Judy make a complete take of Bill Barnes's 'Something Cool' for her CBS TV Show?
