It took me over 20 years to finally understand that to see gains I need to rest between sets. I was doing chronic HIIT, cardio with weights, adding more and more exercise each day and not seeing results. For years. Finally, after discovering you, I took a leap of faith. I quit the cardio, hired a trainer to learn how to do the big lifts properly. Doing Anabolic transformed my body. No more circuits, no more cardio other than walking. I rest 2-3 minutes between sets, and lift heavy. I can eat more than I ever could have before, and I have the best body I’ve ever had. Thank you for changing my life, and my relationship to exercise, and food. 😊

As an over weight woman trying to recomp this is very informative. It's funny once you get honest with yourself . I used to say I hated lifting and loved running but really that's not the case. I'm enjoying less running and more strength

I go lift weights 3 times a week and focus on strength training (this does not apply to the sweet dumbell curls and presses I knock out every so often) and I maximize the value of those three days lifting. This means I rest a good deal longer than I did when I was younger and make sure I am as rested as I can before doing another work set. Warm ups I burn through, but I find myself resting a looong time between work sets on the main lifts I do (standing press, bench, squat, deadlift, bent row) compared to what I used to do. I think I rest around 8 minutes between sets of squats...sometimes I think I need to take a chair to the gym with me.

The last episode really opened up my eyes on lifting. I did back and biceps, but implemented the 4/2/2 pauses, and Jesus, my back is still feeling it. I think that kind of lift forces you to do a good rest period between sets. Thank you guys!

Rest pause technique pushed by Steve Shaw seems to work good. Rests are typically 15 to 30 seconds. That's not much different that circuit training, especially if you do opposing muscle groups when circuit training (more rest). What seems to matter most is making sure you go close to failure (1-3 RIR) and keep the rep range below 10 so you don't get winded. Also, on machines you can go past failure by doing drop sets. I don't circuit train, but I can see it's benefit for people that are limited in time. It's also good for newbies and most people are perpetual newbies because they workout for six months or less then quit for awhile.

Another consideration re: rest periods is that many people think of training results as a function of TIME moreso than EFFORT, particularly when they're paying a trainer. They have it in mind that resting at all is not getting their "money's worth."

I have to admit that I constantly have to remind myself to rest in between sets. I know the concept behind it, and totally believe it. However, putting it into practice is a mental battle that I am constantly having with myself.
On top of that, getting my son to understand proper rest periods when we are working out together is an even bigger challenge. I've seen that his gains have stalled the past couple of weeks that we haven't been able to work out together because of scheduling. He blows through a workout in 30 minutes when it should take 60, and then wonders why he's not seen as much progress. He's only 13 so we have time to work on this together.

What I always do is walk around the gym and pace back and forth for the 2-3 min. Has no impact on the sets at all but adds steps.
Too many people are just scrolling on their phone between sets and not even focused. But walking around for 2-3 min dials me in like a caged wolf for the next set. 😂
After a 50-60 min lifting session, you add an extra 5-6K steps to your daily count and burn an extra 300+ cals per session. But literally, no one ever does this, and everyone just sits on their ass between sets.
