    Hi darling, what a great video, so well explained (thank God you are such a research geek lol) I was especially interested in the HPR as I am using The Ordinary 5% and I was under the impression that it was equivalent to 0.05% tretinoin, now I now that is not the case. I will still keep using it as I am enjoying it and hope for the best, (hopefully there will be more research about its efficacy soon) if not there is always an option of a facelift lol xoxo Nisha

    Adapalene as Differin did not have an anti-aging benefit for me and I used it for 10 months consistently. However, Paula's Choice 1% retinol booster shows almost immediate anti-aging benefits on my skin.

    VERY helpful and beneficial! I used retinaldihyde (Osmosis Correct) for 6 mos and didn’t really notice a difference. So I’m now trying the 2% Granactive in Squaline but it’s only been a few weeks. I love that it’s not drying. I think my next step will be the emulsion that contains retinol to see what happens thanks to your info. Thanks again!

    Retin-A Micro gel is another form of tretinoin that is more stable and supposedly less irritating because it’s a time released formula so your skin doesn’t get blasted with full strength tretinoin as soon as it’s applied. It also comes in additional strengths and I will be starting it shortly...will let you know how it goes.
    I also know that making sure that your skin barrier is well intact prior to starting tretinoin can make a big difference in how well you tolerate it. Keeping your skin well hydrated and using products with no fragrance, essential oils, alcohols or exfoliants, and that contain ceramides, niacinamide, cholesterol, and a combination of hydrating, emollient and occlusive agents prior to and while using any retinoid makes a huge difference in whether or not you have the negative side effects.
    They also just completed a study on the use of adapalene for anti-aging, but they’ve yet to release the results.

    • @TheBeautyMaverick
      @TheBeautyMaverick  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      You are quite right, as I mentioned in another video, the study showing a combination of Niacin, Vitamin E and Panthenol will strengthen the skins barrier and help, and you know me always harping on about no fragrance or alcohol. I do think exfoliants are ok though if used correctly. Oooh that sounds interesting - may I ask where you read about the study if its not yet published? Who carried out the study? Galderma have done a couple of promising studies :0)

    The 2% is that the milk like serum the ordinary came out with when they very first launched their products. I struggle to find out when I look to buy it . The Granactive 5% I've been using as well as Tretinoin from India. I had no issues. But recently the ordinary one is making my eyes water. I'd like to go back to one without the Squalene? ?? Never know if I've spelt that correctly. The milky serum just because my skin felt so much better. Wonderful review Karen . Love to you Angela Jane Lomax xxx 💖💗💝

    You mentioned Peter Thomas Roth...i had gotten a deluxe sample from Sephora of the ( At Home professional 3% Retinoid Plus..it last me 2months, and I truly had amazing results with it! It is very pricey at 82$ US dollars. I now use prescription bc I order over seas for much less...but the PTR by far is the best over the counter for me...you can use it around your eyes without migrating and stinging unlike cream retinols. 😊

    Thank you for this information! I actually have and use prescription Retin A and am up to using twice a week but it’s taken me months to get to this point. I’ve wondered if I could use an over the counter product daily and get equivalent results because going to the dermatologist is easier in the US, but it’s still expensive. Sounds like I’m better of to stick with the Retin A and the plan I have in place. Also, people should know that a tube of Retin A lasts forever because you literally only need a teeny tiny amount. My tube has been in use for months and looks brand new still.

    Karen, Cerave is now in Boots but they are only selling 6 products! The daytime moisturiser is only SPF25, however, the American one is SPF 30🙄 an theres no PM mosturiser either😭 They are selling both cleansers, the tub of thick moisturiser, the bottle of moisturiser and a hand cream. Am really hoping the PM moisturiser becomes available soon as this is the one I really want! Sorry this is nothing to do with this video but just thought i'd let you know👍🏻 Great video though👏🏻 I applied my 0.025 after 6 days this week and no dryness or flaking so far so next week I will try 5 days but if I react il just go slower dropping one day a week🤞🏻xx

      Mrs Ginger Beauty Was so excited too Karen😭😂 On the U.S Am moisturiser it states on the front of the bottle Ceramides, Niaciamide an Hyaluronic acid and on the back only lists 6 active ingredients. The one I bought today in Boots doesn't list Hylaronic acid🙄 Also looked at the ingredients on the U.S PM moisturiser which does include a full list of ingredients, however, their ceramides have numbers eg Ceramide 3, 6-ll, 1 an the UK one Ceramide NP, AP, EOP. Also some of the ingredients are the same on our version of the AM an their PM however, there are a few different ones but then I really know nothing about ingredients, so maybe they just have different names? Also our bottle is only 52ml compared to theirs which is 89ml😕 Sorry for the big story😳😂 xx

    Hi Karen, good explanation of the various forms of A. I personally use Refissa and love it! I do get some dry skin but massage my face with squalane as needed-and the peeling just rolls right off. I know you cannot get Refissa but you may have an option. In the US there are pharmacy chemists who basically take your prescription (the main ingredient, tretinoin in this case) and modify it to your liking if it is chemically possible/reasonable. My FP told me about it and gave me a phone number. You may have this option available to you as well. It it is not widely known option-with looking into. On a separate note, I built up my Refissa patiently and it has paid off. It did take one year of six to seven days a week of use to see truly obvious results. Best wishes ❤️

    I thought this was very interesting & helpful, so thank you! I am 39 and have been using retinol for ages (just drugstore) & started alternating with differin about 6 months ago (not seeing much happen from it). Is there an advantage to starting a low percentage retin-A now or should I wait until I'm older? I'm wondering if I'll have better results in the long run, hope that makes sense. I've been using Retin-a for 22 years, and yes, it's very easy to misuse / overuse. I still don't use it every night. In summer I only use 1-2 nights a week, in winter maybe 3 nights a week. It's probably not suitable for everyone, but I can say I have very sensitive skin and used conservatively I am fine with it. People will say "retin-a ruined my skin / gave me orange peel skin" but it's really more a case of them not using the product properly... they usually use too much too soon and at a too high strength without building up slowly. The orange peel skin will resolve itself with gentle care, drinking plenty of water and a very healthy diet with exercise. The orange peel skin is basically "the uglies" that some aggressive products can cause as the dermis is just moving too fast for the epidermis to keep up ie. the skin repairing itself is not keeping up with "controlled damage" that's happening. I've had orange peel skin from botched laser (not caused by retin-a) and it did eventually resolve itself. I hope this feedback helps someone :)

    • @margsimpson
      @margsimpson 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Very well said and factual information Msglamourcat.
      This is exactly the case with tretinoin and many other actives too. As you say you need to start with a weak strength and move very slowly. many people have sensitive skin and can never move on to the highest strength but need to know that a milder strength of tretinoin is still proven to work, so perhaps there best bet is to stick with that milder one, it will still give ant aging benifit.

    Hi Karen. ....I love your videos, they are so informative and helpful. I'm 51, I had some mild life lines (my term for wrinkles! ) around my eyes and mouth. I started using Retin-A in October and I slowly built myself up. I was exfoliating and using good products and I was starting to see improvement in all aspects of the condition of my skin. All of a sudden, literally in a couple of days, I noticed that I had pretty bad wrinkles in the same areas where I had the fine lines. It's horrible and I don't know what to do. I have stopped using it and I'm increasing my moisturizer but it's not getting any better. I actually look older than I am and before I looked younger.
    Have you ever heard of this and do you have any suggestions for what I can try? It's terrible and I'm so upset that I seemed to have damaged my skin. If ANYONE has any ideas please help! Thank you.

      Oh no Beth, how disheartening to have this happen! I'm afraid I've never heard of that - perhaps one of the ladies on here has? I wouldn't know what to suggest without a full consult, so I'd say a visit to a dermatologist would be a great investment at this stage as they might be able to identify whats causing the problem. x

    @Mrs Ginger Beauty Since your knowledge about the topic is so broad, I feel safe to ask if Ordinary's Granactive Retinoid 2% Emulsion is safe for around the eye area (crows feet and fine lines)? Is it better to use Retinol or Argireline instead? Kind regards and greetings from Croatia :)

    • @TheBeautyMaverick
      @TheBeautyMaverick  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Its a controversial subject (using retinoids near eyes) and it all depends on the other products you use and what type of skin you have, so I'm afraid I can't really recommend since I don't know your skin and regime. In general the advice is not to use it near your eyes. I personally don't think the 2% emulsion will cause any issues when used NEAR the eyes but obviously not on lids or under them but the retinol I would keep well away. x

      @@TheBeautyMaverick Thank you so much for your professional answer :* I'm very concerned about my fine lines (I have them a lot and I'm just 32) so I'm desperately looking for an answer (if there is one that is not botox). My skin is normal to oily and I've been using only hydration formulas around my eyes. I see that you use Argireline and your eyes and around the eye area look amazing, so maybe I should try that instead of retinoids?

    I really enjoy watching your videos. I feel like you could be chatting to me over a cup of tea...The way you 'waffle' on and are always so forgetful is great.... Regards to Retin A, I started using tretinoin 0.05% jabout 6 weeks ago. I started with 2 nights a week and now using it every other night. I tried putting my serums on first (I use Ordinary the Matrixal, Niocinemide & Alpha Arbutin) waiting about 1 hour then applying the Retin A, then before bed applying moisturiser. I also tried applying the Retin A first, waiting about an hour then applying my serums and moisturiser. To be honest it didn't make much differnce either way. I got hardly any irritation but dry and peeling skin in the first 3-4 weeks. The last 2 weeks or so, I only get very very mild dryness and hardly any peeling. It could be my skin has adjusted well but in this last 2-3 weeks I have started using a non-alcholic suncream and using a more moisturising night cream and I feel this has had something to do with it too. I think you should increase to using the Retin A twice a week but cut back on the amount you put on. I literally use a small pea size amount. I am very much at the beginning stages of using Retin A but my feeling is that in order for your skin to get used to the Retin A you need to use it more than once a week the time you have used it for. All the best

      yes! using less tretinoin more often is the way to go! I've had extremely dry, eczema prone skin since I was a kid so I'm not the ideal candidate for using tretinoin but I've had such a great experience. I've been on it for 5 months and I went hard the first few weeks but the itching was just too much for me and I broke out with rosacea and lots of rosacea pimples on my cheeks. I started mixing a large pea sized amount with moisturizer and then applying it and it's been so great I might even say it's been life changing. My skin has never looked this great, it's super clear, soft, smooth, bright and the lines on my forehead and smile lines are looking just the tiniest bit better. At first I was too stubborn to mix it with moisturizer and though I could just power through the discomfort and that was a stupid thing to do. I though it would take me longer to get results if I diluted the tretinoin with moisturizer but I was making myself miserable with itchiness and it meant I used it less often(ensuring I wouldn't get the best results). Now that I mix the tretinoin with moisturizer I can use it a lot more often and I'm getting the results without any discomfort and basically no pealing. Now I'm even able to use a higher strength tretinoin on certain parts of my face so I'm very pleased.
      I totally agree with you that if you want to get over the bad side-effects it needs to be used at least twice a week otherwise you skin is having to re-acclimate it's self every time you use it.

    Hi Karen I tried a few Retinol products (previous Granactice Retinoid 2%, Alpha H 0.5% Retinol and Cerave Skin Renewing Cream serum. Strangely, only my neck got really itchy (? use less moisturiser on my neck than face) but it reacted at very random times and of each product I reacted a couple to a few times. Do you think it is user error?

    I read that cetyl alcohol is supposed to have benefits of locking in moisture and protecting your skin, good for dry skin. I hope that I did not waste my money on this product, had so many good reviews on amazon. Thanks

    @Mrs Ginger Beauty I’m an Asian 29 years old and have an oily skin prone to occasional cystic acne. I want to incorporate a retinol in my routine for mainly acne, scars and anti aging. Which type of retinoid will you recommend for me? I’m considering TO’s granactive emulsion or mad hippie vitamin A serum. Please help!

      If u r in Asia u should go for Skin A 0.5 Retin A. But start with 1 time in a week and with moisturizer

    Are you aware of how long retinol lasts in the skin after it's been applied? I read the research for hpr and was excited bc it showed it was good against acne (although that formulation was hpr + encapsulated retinol) however i didnt know it wasnt independent research :/ i use the 2% hpr in squalane and it works well for my under the skin pimples in my chin so i am happy about that but i think ill buy the emulsion when im finished then after the emulsion go up to the .25 retinol

    Hi Karen, I'm curious as to why you use Tretinoin just once a week. I think Angie of hotandflashy uses hers twice a day. Her skin seems very sensitive like yours. Hmm. I just strated with the Differin twice a day and I moisturize like crazy over it, hope I see results but no irritation at all at this moment. Thanks for all yr research for us.

      Hi Mrs Ginger, I've been using Tretinoin for 3/12 months. I've been very lucky to have no irrational at all.. Apart from one tiny circle above my top lip of dryness... My eyelids were stinging at the beginning even though I never put the cream on them, but it travels. My eyelids no longer sting.. I was using the Ordinary Retinol in 1% for about a year before starting Retin A though. I believe this prepared my skin for the Trettinion. It amazes me how different our skins all are. I do feel very lucky indeed to have nothing really to complain about. I love the stuff... I've noticed slight changes already, as I use it daily.. At night time of course. I did stop for a week leading up to Christmas as my skin left dry to me. This took care of my dry skin as its back to normal again.. Thank you so much for all your wonderful, researched videos. Your so kind to us all doing all this hard work for us.. Happy New Year to you and family, may 2019 bring you much Happiness xx ❤️ Oh I forgot to say I'm from Australia, thank goodness we can get Tretinion easy here. My GP gave me a script to try it out, only $24.99 here for the Brand Stieva-A again I know how lucky I am.. This price is far cheaper than facial creams sold over the counter here.. Even Olay products,m is more expensive here..

    Took me ages to find this video but finally did, was SURE I'd seen you talk about 'TO granactive retinoid 2% emulsion', I've been using it for a while now with zero irritation and was wondering if I should finally try a retinol on it's own, I had no idea that this does have some retinol in it but do you know how much? Very wary of going down the route of the Peter Roth stuff straight from a granactive and as you say it may turn out that this could be the best thing since sliced bread - IF you had to recommend a low strength retinol product what would it be? I love the emulsion but didn't like the squalane format (even though I love squalane mixed into my moisturiser). Is there such a thing as a retinol emulsion for a beginner? Can't wait to hear about your Blepharoplasty Karen, will be thinking about you xxx

      If I had to recommend a low strength Retinol, there are lots - TO in squalane, Inkey Retinol, Garden of Wisdom Retinol, BUT I have irritation with all those - the only one I haven't had irritation with is the La Roche Posay Redermic R, but I don't know how much Retinol is in it. x

    I'm using Tretinoin 0.05% for almost 3 years but I've never had any kind of hard reactions as others... Yes, my face was red but without peeling... Actually, I have peeling behind my ears even now xD I talked with my dermatologist an she told me that that is because of my (really/extremely) oily skin :)
