  • Chris De La Rosa from CaribbeanPot.com shares an alternative way of making classic callaloo soup as it's traditionally done in Trinidad and Tobago and the rest of the southern Caribbean. Instead of using the traditional dasheen bush (taro) leaves, freshly grated coconut milk and fresh from the sea blue crabs, we'll be using baby spinach, canned coconut milk and crab meat from the can. Ingredients you can find commonly sold in North america and Europe. However, this callaloo will rival any made with traditional ingredients.
    You'll Need...
    1 lb baby spinach leaves
    10-15 okra
    1 cup cubed pumpkin
    1 onion (diced)
    3 cloves of garlic (smashed)
    2 scallions (green / spring onion)
    3 sprigs thyme
    1 cup coconut milk (from a can)
    1 1/2 cups fish or seafood stock
    1/4 teaspoon black pepper
    1 can crab meat (save the water it was packed in) about 120g
    1 scotch bonnet pepper
    1/3 teaspoon salt *
    Most fish or seafood stock will contain sodium so be mindful of this when adding salt to the dish. Remember you can always adjust at the end of cooking.

    Hey, Chris. Loving the channel. This looks awesome! Thanks for making an easier approximation of this dish because, living in Australia, dasheen leaves would be near impossible to find. Can't wait to give this a shot!

    I normally use the frozen spinach, it is a bit chunky until I swizzle it, all in all I do get a good consistency and the flavor is there. I am going to try this one cause you are never to old to learn. Thanks for sharing

      Honestly when i first made this i really did not think it would taste like Callaloo. Once i smell it boiling down i know it was going to taste pretty close to the real deal. i just dump 5$ in snow crab in mines for flavor.

    I use the frozen spinach and okro. Smoked turkey or smoked pork neck bones is a good substitution if no pigtail ( hubby allergic to crab). Tastes great.

    this looks great chris! i guess to make this vegan i will have to substitute a little bit of crumbled firm tofu soaked in seaweed dashi stock or some miso (or both) and maybe some wakami seaweed for a taste of the sea... oh well, i'll have to get the ingredients together to try it. but i understand what you mean about making the substitutions when you can't get the real thing.

    Alas, I've never seen okra in any grocery store and also have never seen canned crab meat. I am sure if it is available somewhere in Germany it is some luxery food I could never afford.

    • @RubenvonZwack
      @RubenvonZwack 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey fellow German, check out the grocery section of Asian markets, and Pakistani food stores! Where I live they all carry Okra. It's not wildly expensive. And I wouldn't bet my life on it, but I'm pretty sure I've also seen canned crab meat in the Asian markets.

    • @CologneCarter
      @CologneCarter 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ruben von Zwack Thanks, but the Chinese Supermarket (really, it says so on the banner) near me doesn't have any fresh stuff, no vegetables, no fruit, no herbs. They aren't big on canned goods either, but the have an endless isle of ramen noodles and countless varieties of sauces from soy sauce to fish sauce and anything inbetween.

    Chris, will this dish work with tuna ? I don't eat shellfish ! : (

    • @MarabouKreyol
      @MarabouKreyol 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi, I don't eat shellfish either but in the northern part of Ayiti, beef is substituted for the shellfish. I have tried making it using smoked herring and it's still good with white rice. Traditionally it's made with blue crabs but the fun part with the Caribbean recipes is that you can adapt them to your own taste. hope that helps.

    Have you ever tried to make it with collard greens, mustard green or kale?

    • @Afiplaysmusic
      @Afiplaysmusic 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Seygra, I tried collards, but the flavor and texture aren't the same as the version he's making. For Callalloo, you need a softer green than collards or kale.
