Radiohead is not depressive. Is not the perfect music to be depressed. It is the perfect music to come to terms with anything that caused grieve, that makes us feel small and powerless. It's the perfect music to remind us that is ok to not be ok. It's part of the human experience.

I am 13 years old and I have been looking for this song 8 years! When I was 5 years old, I heard it somewhere. I think on TV. It was the first and the last time I heard this song. From that day, all these years this damn melody was in my mind everyday. I was looking for this song everywhere. I couldn't remember even a word of this song to search it. The insane thing is that I could play this song on the guitar the last two years and play the exact three chords! Everything by ear! Even though that I heard this song only one time, when I was 5 years old! Recently, as I couldn't find this song anywhere, I thought-said to myself that maybe this song doesn't exist. Maybe it came out of my own mind. Until two weeks ago. One day, I was sitting on the couch watcing an old series. It was about 8 years old. And finally...BOOM! I heard this song after 8 damn years! I run in front to the tv and fell on my knees. I was so happy and emotional at the same moment. I couldn't believe it! This song exists! I search for the episode right away and here I am! I FOUND IT!

Thom Yorke said It's one of his darker songs, with strange lyrics and a foreboding message. He didn't especially enjoy playing the song live, but it was one of the most highly anticipated and requested at shows. The band declined playing it live as it was in a dark tunnel moment of Thom's life with his struggles.... and man, don't ask who else is here in 2020, we never left.

This song is about the passage of time, and the realization that everything is effected by death. If you listen to the rhythm, it sounds like a ticking clock. Also the steady rhythm could represent a heartbeat, and symbolize how much time a person has left. The whole song seems hopeless at first, like death always happens and there is nothing we can do to change it, but it has the best redeeming quality at the end when Thom says “Immerse your soul in love”. Basically he’s saying that life is too short to live in hate, and that we need to make the most of each moment by loving each other.

    • @julioanez1196
      @julioanez1196 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

that phrase is metaphorical that can be interpreted as you say to love each other but it conveys also a more tragic and misterious connotation that is stronger than the easier one of loving, in fact the verb used as imperative "immerse" suggests that you are compelled to do that but realising that you are going also to be overwhelmend, asphyxiated, drowned eventually by that immersion of your soul in love, so as York said trying to explain the inexplicable core of the song it doesnt matter whatever you do for winning you are not going to have the last laugh but devil will. You can put the lights you want on the song but it itself will adrift towards darkness where it belongs.

    LYRICS:
Rows of houses all bearing down on me
I can feel their blue hands touching me
    All these things into position
All these things we'll one day swallow whole
And fade out again and fade out
This machine will, will not communicate
These thoughts and the strain I am under
Be a world child, form a circle
    Before we all go under
    And fade out again
    And fade out again
    Cracked eggs, dead birds
Scream as they fight for life
I can feel death, can see its beady eyes
    All these things into position
All these things we'll one day swallow whole
    And fade out again
    And fade out again
    Immerse your soul in love

The MIX on this song deserves enormous credit. The 2nd half of the song has two separate beautiful guitar melodies weaving in and out of each other, with strings, beautiful shimmering drums, thick low bass, and one of the greatest vocal performances I've ever heard. And every layer is vividly clear and glorious.

    • @corkscrewfoley
      @corkscrewfoley 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

It might not be a mix, since this is called a counterpoint (thank you Charles Collins). It's where two separate melodies play at once, and there's enough notes in each to connect them as one.

Thom: “Street Spirit is our purest song, but I didn’t write it. It wrote itself. We were just its messengers; its biological catalysts. Its core is a complete mystery to me, and, you know, I wouldn’t ever try to write something that hopeless. All of our saddest songs have somewhere in them at least a glimmer of resolve. Street Spirit has no resolve. It is the dark tunnel without the light at the end. It represents all tragic emotion that is so hurtful that the sound of that melody is its only definition. We all have a way of dealing with that song. It’s called detachment. Especially me; I detach my emotional radar from that song, or I couldn’t play it. I’d crack. I’d break down on stage. That’s why its lyrics are just a bunch of mini-stories or visual images as opposed to a cohesive explanation of its meaning. I used images set to the music that I thought would convey the emotional entirety of the lyric and music working together. That’s what’s meant by ‘all these things you’ll one day swallow whole’. I meant the emotional entirety, because I didn’t have it in me to articulate the emotion. I’d crack…
Our fans are braver than I to let that song penetrate them, or maybe they don’t realise what they’re listening to. They don’t realise that Street Spirit is about staring the fucking devil right in the eyes, and knowing, no matter what the hell you do, he’ll get the last laugh. And it’s real, and true. The devil really will get the last laugh in all cases without exception, and if I let myself think about that too long, I’d crack.
I can’t believe we have fans that can deal emotionally with that song. That’s why I’m convinced that they don’t know what it’s about. It’s why we play it towards the end of our sets. It drains me, and it shakes me, and hurts like hell every time I play it, looking out at thousands of people cheering and smiling, oblivious to the tragedy of its meaning, like when you’re going to have your dog put down and it’s wagging its tail on the way there. That’s what they all look like, and it breaks my heart. I wish that song hadn’t picked us as its catalysts, and so I don’t claim it. It asks too much. I didn’t write that song.”

+Joshua Lessore To say he's pretentious implies he's lying. That's he's trying to make something "appear" to be what it isn't. Wake the fuck up! Music is fucking subjective. That's the problem with your personal projection. If you haven't figured that out yet you're a bigger idiot than I can imagine. Just because the song doesn't effect you as much as it effects someone else doesn't mean they're making it all up. Maybe he was just being sincere and not caring what other people think. He's talented enough he has the right to express himself as an artist. Who gives a shit if it doesn't effect everyone the same is him. I mean, I wish I had written that song as it describes my depression better than I can. Props to him for doing that.
I've always wanted to write a song about the need people have to shoot down others emotions and discredit them. It's something I notice about a lot of people and society in general. Everyone is so desperate to be "cool" and unaffected. Maybe it's fear, maybe it's just not connecting. I don't know what it is exactly but it's definitely destructive. Lets shut down someone else's emotional expression by labeling it pretentious! That we we can feel cooler than that person! It's an interesting theme but I'm not as talented at expressing it poetically.

The funny thing is you can take it both ways, it can be a totally sincere message from Thom meaning every letter in that sentence, or it can be entirely sardonic, with the message alluding to the fact that in a very pessimistic and cynical way, that the meaning of life is actually suffering because this song is one of the most depressing Radiohead has ever put out, these songs are usually accompanied with a hopeful message in the end but with how gloomy this one is, it makes you doubt the message at the end at all or if there even was one.

This being the final track on The Bends is really ominous in a way: you have an entire album of loud alternative rock, Britpop, big crunchy guitars, and then the last track comes along: these ominous acoustic guitars, no full drum groove for the first half, and lyrics that act as a precursor to the gloomy existential end-of-the-century crisis of OK Computer. On OK that existentialism is used to convey a sadness and a weariness - on Fade Out it sounds like Tom is desperately crying in horror. Many people say that OK Computer utterly transcended The Bends, but the themes and the tone is all in this last song - this would fit on OK Computer no doubt about it.

Back in the 90's at least Thom used to say he didn't actually compose this song, that it basically came out on its own and manifested in the studio. Up until The Bends at least they tried to keep a silver lining even in their most desperate compositions, but there was no sliver of hope in Fade Out. And he closed the question with a visible shiver, saying "I DID NOT make that song".

This was such an amazing song choice and it made that scene. I consider the show very mediocre, but I really enjoyed that scene with this song... even though that scene was forced on many levels. June wrestling aunt Lydia for that Baton for 14 seconds, then to waste another 14 seconds to decide whether or not to hit her and for that to result in 4 deaths. And also 6 handmaids with nothing left to lose are left alone in a truck with aunt Lydia, who is only equipped with 1 cattle prod, of course they're going to run. This is just atrocious writing, which so much of the show is.

I remember I was really hurted when my ex broke up with me... I listened to Radiohead for a long time, feeling like the hole inside of me was filling up by their music. One day, I was walking on the street, going to nowhere, just enjoying the walk and started to rain. My headphones started to play this song. And there was the rain, this song, the street at night and me... Healing my heart. I'll never forget that day. Thank you Radiohead. Thank you for saving me every single day.
Edited: 2 years after this comment. I'm really fine, still single haha. Just studying and trying to not become crazy for Coronavirus. Full of wishes of hope and joy for everyone (including people didn't like my experiencie).

Amazing how a single piece of music can make you feel such aching agony one day and then uplift you & mend you from that same hurt the next day. This one is hands down my favorite Radiohead tune. It never fails to turn me inward to face whatever emotion I'm trying to shove far away from my heart.

Listening for Mark Stokes, I didnt know him, but followed his battle with cancer for the past few months on Twitter, he said goodbye and this song was his last post. In some weird way this made me feel my own mortality in an overwhelming way. Their bravery and facing the end of their life was strangely beautiful and almost poetic. I dont know if hes passed yet, but I hope he goes peacefully and rests in peace.

My late son, Bob, just loved Radiohead. Indeed his band initially called themselves Letdown in homage to the group.
They came to see that so much of Radiohead's music is uplifting so they changed their name to Lights. (They have a video on TH-cam. See their track "Air" from the LightsBand. Bob is the bass player. Sadly it is the only track uploaded before their split in 2011).
Bob died of cancer two years ago leaving behind a beautiful wife and two gorgeous children. I will always treasure those final few hours as he approached his death and the two of us started singing together. He was too weak to sing so it was a rhythmic chant. Bob never gave in to darkness and always saw the love and joy to be had in life. I miss Bob so much but we carry on, doing the best that we can. Peace and love.

A friend of mine mentioned that she always gets this song stuck in her head whenever I walk into the room. I am extremely troubled by this.

This song has a purpose, and it isn’t to inspire joy, sadness or anything remotely close. It’s simply a realization that we all have something to face that isn’t what we want, what we need or what will help. It’s the end and we have to deal with finality.
