Radiohead is not depressive. Is not the perfect music to be depressed. It is the perfect music to come to terms with anything that caused grieve, that makes us feel small and powerless. It's the perfect music to remind us that is ok to not be ok. It's part of the human experience.

  • @mappy54

Thom: “Street Spirit is our purest song, but I didn’t write it. It wrote itself. We were just its messengers; its biological catalysts. Its core is a complete mystery to me, and, you know, I wouldn’t ever try to write something that hopeless. All of our saddest songs have somewhere in them at least a glimmer of resolve. Street Spirit has no resolve. It is the dark tunnel without the light at the end. It represents all tragic emotion that is so hurtful that the sound of that melody is its only definition. We all have a way of dealing with that song. It’s called detachment. Especially me; I detach my emotional radar from that song, or I couldn’t play it. I’d crack. I’d break down on stage. That’s why its lyrics are just a bunch of mini-stories or visual images as opposed to a cohesive explanation of its meaning. I used images set to the music that I thought would convey the emotional entirety of the lyric and music working together. That’s what’s meant by ‘all these things you’ll one day swallow whole’. I meant the emotional entirety, because I didn’t have it in me to articulate the emotion. I’d crack…
Our fans are braver than I to let that song penetrate them, or maybe they don’t realise what they’re listening to. They don’t realise that Street Spirit is about staring the fucking devil right in the eyes, and knowing, no matter what the hell you do, he’ll get the last laugh. And it’s real, and true. The devil really will get the last laugh in all cases without exception, and if I let myself think about that too long, I’d crack.
I can’t believe we have fans that can deal emotionally with that song. That’s why I’m convinced that they don’t know what it’s about. It’s why we play it towards the end of our sets. It drains me, and it shakes me, and hurts like hell every time I play it, looking out at thousands of people cheering and smiling, oblivious to the tragedy of its meaning, like when you’re going to have your dog put down and it’s wagging its tail on the way there. That’s what they all look like, and it breaks my heart. I wish that song hadn’t picked us as its catalysts, and so I don’t claim it. It asks too much. I didn’t write that song.”

+Joshua Lessore To say he's pretentious implies he's lying. That's he's trying to make something "appear" to be what it isn't. Wake the fuck up! Music is fucking subjective. That's the problem with your personal projection. If you haven't figured that out yet you're a bigger idiot than I can imagine. Just because the song doesn't effect you as much as it effects someone else doesn't mean they're making it all up. Maybe he was just being sincere and not caring what other people think. He's talented enough he has the right to express himself as an artist. Who gives a shit if it doesn't effect everyone the same is him. I mean, I wish I had written that song as it describes my depression better than I can. Props to him for doing that.
I've always wanted to write a song about the need people have to shoot down others emotions and discredit them. It's something I notice about a lot of people and society in general. Everyone is so desperate to be "cool" and unaffected. Maybe it's fear, maybe it's just not connecting. I don't know what it is exactly but it's definitely destructive. Lets shut down someone else's emotional expression by labeling it pretentious! That we we can feel cooler than that person! It's an interesting theme but I'm not as talented at expressing it poetically.

    LYRICS:
Rows of houses all bearing down on me
I can feel their blue hands touching me
    All these things into position
All these things we'll one day swallow whole
And fade out again and fade out
This machine will, will not communicate
These thoughts and the strain I am under
Be a world child, form a circle
    Before we all go under
    And fade out again
    And fade out again
    Cracked eggs, dead birds
Scream as they fight for life
I can feel death, can see its beady eyes
    All these things into position
All these things we'll one day swallow whole
    And fade out again
    And fade out again
    Immerse your soul in love
    Immerse your soul in love

I am 13 years old and I have been looking for this song 8 years! When I was 5 years old, I heard it somewhere. I think on TV. It was the first and the last time I heard this song. From that day, all these years this damn melody was in my mind everyday. I was looking for this song everywhere. I couldn't remember even a word of this song to search it. The insane thing is that I could play this song on the guitar the last two years and play the exact three chords! Everything by ear! Even though that I heard this song only one time, when I was 5 years old! Recently, as I couldn't find this song anywhere, I thought-said to myself that maybe this song doesn't exist. Maybe it came out of my own mind. Until two weeks ago. One day, I was sitting on the couch watcing an old series. It was about 8 years old. And finally...BOOM! I heard this song after 8 damn years! I run in front to the tv and fell on my knees. I was so happy and emotional at the same moment. I couldn't believe it! This song exists! I search for the episode right away and here I am! I FOUND IT!

The funny thing is you can take it both ways, it can be a totally sincere message from Thom meaning every letter in that sentence, or it can be entirely sardonic, with the message alluding to the fact that in a very pessimistic and cynical way, that the meaning of life is actually suffering because this song is one of the most depressing Radiohead has ever put out, these songs are usually accompanied with a hopeful message in the end but with how gloomy this one is, it makes you doubt the message at the end at all or if there even was one.

  • @punter1

Thom Yorke said It's one of his darker songs, with strange lyrics and a foreboding message. He didn't especially enjoy playing the song live, but it was one of the most highly anticipated and requested at shows. The band declined playing it live as it was in a dark tunnel moment of Thom's life with his struggles.... and man, don't ask who else is here in 2020, we never left.

The MIX on this song deserves enormous credit. The 2nd half of the song has two separate beautiful guitar melodies weaving in and out of each other, with strings, beautiful shimmering drums, thick low bass, and one of the greatest vocal performances I've ever heard. And every layer is vividly clear and glorious.

This being the final track on The Bends is really ominous in a way: you have an entire album of loud alternative rock, Britpop, big crunchy guitars, and then the last track comes along: these ominous acoustic guitars, no full drum groove for the first half, and lyrics that act as a precursor to the gloomy existential end-of-the-century crisis of OK Computer. On OK that existentialism is used to convey a sadness and a weariness - on Fade Out it sounds like Tom is desperately crying in horror. Many people say that OK Computer utterly transcended The Bends, but the themes and the tone is all in this last song - this would fit on OK Computer no doubt about it.

Back in the 90's at least Thom used to say he didn't actually compose this song, that it basically came out on its own and manifested in the studio. Up until The Bends at least they tried to keep a silver lining even in their most desperate compositions, but there was no sliver of hope in Fade Out. And he closed the question with a visible shiver, saying "I DID NOT make that song".

Radiohead has definitely contributed to my "spiritual awakening". It so well taps into the depths of human psyche, all of the songs composed after Pablo honey manage to somehow relate to a specific human emotion or struggle, it's almost surreal how well radiohead can express the human psychologically simply by the medium of music. I wouldn't be surprised if this band saved many from suicide.

One of the most masterful songs I've ever witnessed. One of their absolute best. I never have enough words for this band, truly. Street Spirit makes me feel so numbingly alive, I feel like my soul is transcending into another realm. I'm quite sure it is. The song just completely throws you into the deepest state of thought and emotions, which can feel distressful at times, but that's just part of being human. Everything feels raw, numb; *alive* . Radiohead always finds a way of making us feel the most human possible. I'm so thankful for this song, for every one of their captivating masterpieces. Nothing short of magic 🖤

This song can't make you depressed. Other things make you depressed, things like existence. And the song makes you less depressed, because you realize that you are not alone in this absurd reality, from which there is no escape. There is a way out of the existential shock. Incredibly, this is true - each and every fear is defeatable.

    LYRICS
Rows of houses all bearing down on me
I can feel their blue hands touching me
    All these things into position
All these things we'll one day swallow whole
And fade out again and fade out
This machine will, will not communicate
These thoughts and the strain I am under
Be a world child, form a circle
    Before we all go under
    And fade out again
    And fade out again
    Cracked eggs, dead birds
Scream as they fight for life
I can feel death, can see its beady eyes
    All these things into position
All these things we'll one day swallow whole
    And fade out again
    And fade out again
    Immerse your soul in love

I am only 3 months old and just discovering Radiohead. Going from 'Row, Row, Row Your Boat' to this is quite a leap. But I really am loving deconstructing the chord progressions and the lyrics are nice and deep and speak to me on a level that " The Wheels On The Bus " simply can't any longer. Listening to Videotape now and despite my young age, this would be great, played at my funeral.

Именно это означают «всё разобщенное, что поглощено целым» ('all these things are one to swallow whole').

This was such an amazing song choice and it made that scene. I consider the show very mediocre, but I really enjoyed that scene with this song... even though that scene was forced on many levels. June wrestling aunt Lydia for that Baton for 14 seconds, then to waste another 14 seconds to decide whether or not to hit her and for that to result in 4 deaths. And also 6 handmaids with nothing left to lose are left alone in a truck with aunt Lydia, who is only equipped with 1 cattle prod, of course they're going to run. This is just atrocious writing, which so much of the show is.

One day, I was walking on the street, going to nowhere, just enjoying the walk and started to rain. My headphones started to play this song. And there was the rain, this song, the street at night and me... Healing my heart. I'll never forget that day. Thank you Radiohead. Thank you for saving me every single day.

They came to see that so much of Radiohead's music is uplifting so they changed their name to Lights. (They have a video on TH-cam. See their track "Air" from the LightsBand. Bob is the bass player. Sadly it is the only track uploaded before their split in 2011).
Bob died of cancer two years ago leaving behind a beautiful wife and two gorgeous children. I will always treasure those final few hours as he approached his death and the two of us started singing together. He was too weak to sing so it was a rhythmic chant. Bob never gave in to darkness and always saw the love and joy to be had in life. I miss Bob so much but we carry on, doing the best that we can. Peace and love.

This is what we mean when we call them artists . So many modern groups don't deserve that as a title radiohead and Thom Yorke do .
