This song is written in the Dorian mode. Its a key that close to the happier major scale but also the sadder minor scale. Probably more info that you were asking for but I came here from a music theory video on the scale and saw this comment and thought how it basically describes the scale.
I really like how this song makes me feel, it is like everything is lost, however there's still a small light to fight to keep going. It was the last song my stepfather and I heard before he left this world. I love it
This was the last song me and my mum listened to before she died. We did a 13 hour road trip and only had one mixtape and we both loved this song so we listened to it again and again. After she died I couldn’t listen to any other song for a long time, then after a while I couldn’t listen to it anymore ‘cause it made me so sad. It still makes me sad but in a good way and I will love this song with all my heart forever. It feels like it keeps me company when I’m sad or upset
U r mum would be so proud of you. ...I can relate with u a little ..I lost my mum at a very young age as well ...stay strong friend ..godbless....some songs are so special
MjauDuuude my mum died too of cancer, and Radiohead was one of the last bands we heard together...Pablo Honey and Amnesiac, the pyramid song and we felt so connected without words...i still can feel her next to me when im hearing them ! So many emotions ! She had a recover before it got worse,so happy we could spend time together before she was falling in coma...i thank Radiohead for being so emotionally, wish i could meet them and explain what this meant to me ! Hope your fine now,and i can assure you,our mothers will always be deep inside our heart, happy we have this in common, blessings and a hug :)
Andy Biehl Thank you for the empathic words...sometimes a prayer for each other can help, its good to know we can share feelings with each other...exactly that is missed today...we think we are alone...and that is very dangerous for our soul...but we are NOT...i am here ! And you all are here too :)
The change at the end (the "i lost myself" part) is one of the most epic moments i've ever heard in a song. Completely unexpected the first time you heard it, as the first part of the song seems harmless and easy listening. Always bristles your skin. And this is one of the very few Radiohead's songs that are better in studio than live versions. In the studio version you can feel that change harder and the distorted voice of Thom close the circle.
wow dude, so good analysis of the way than Tom sing, I had already noticed that inflection in Tom's voice when he sings the final part, I listened to him as if there was a desperation in his singing but I always thought it was my imagination hehehehe, now I know that Tom did it intentionally because there are already several who we noticed, greetings ;)
Exactly, it seems to me that there could be two songs. The i lost myself part is such a great countdown to the end that you feel sad it is only part of one song.
I think about the end a lot. Originally I thought that this video was just okay. But when you really think about this video; a tired man who's about to give up being chased and most likely about to get run over.....and at the last moment he finds a way to beat this car that has most likely been chasing him for many many miles. We don't realize that we have more power than we actually do, even however small it may seem we can make a difference and something as small as a match can help us overcome our darkest moments. It's genius. I can't believe I never thought about it until a few months ago. Great music video.
@@josecarlossilva944I think it’s more so that Thom represents spite. He is convincing us (the driver) to chase this man down. Eventually, the man overcomes our constant threat and pressure by realizing our weakness. Because we chased him out of spite for so long, we left a trail (the gasoline). He uses that trail to take us out, and when we look around, we see no one else is with us. Our spite and anger is gone in our final moments and we are only left to atone for our actions. It’s karma.
Same, I know and love only one song from radiohead, but after watching invincible and really liking this song Im currently listening to more of their works.
Just curious but how old are you? (not an insult i am generaly curious) because its not that many years ago since radiohead was like one of the biggest bands in the world and this were one of their more famous songs

Ok' computer saved my life. The day I was going to end it all, I listened to the album after promising a friend. It would be the last thing I did for anyone, I just didnt want to let him down. This song hit me so hard I broke down, by the end of the album I felt reborn, new.. like everything just made sense. My friend still doesn't know he saved my life with Radiohead album. *EDIT* Thank you, beautiful people, for the love, support and kind words! I'm still pushing forward and improving myself and life best I can, as I hope you all are as well. I'm genuinely amazed that the comment I threw into the void has seemingly had such a positive reaction. From others sharing their experiences to people taking something away from it, I'm so pleased. Even the comments thinking I'm baiting for engagement, I have no hate for you folks. I hope you're well. Stay strong folks, love you all!!
Retrospectively, mine too. I listened to it when I wasn't sure what the f is the purpose (still haven't found it), if there is one anyway but those long bus rides to where I was stationed were filled with it. I swapped it for a disk of Skunk Anansie (also awesome but emotionally different). Your case is more salient though. I hope you are without too many conflicts in your everyday life (LIFE).

The lyric “for a minute there, i lost myself” is so impactful for me. I have lost myself for awhile but sometimes just for a minute. When my gf and I broke up, I was not in a good place. This song stuck to me for years among others by Radiohead but its this song that just sticks forever. Thank you Thom.
Omg yesss. I love that verse so much it was my very first tattoo. I got it in honor of how I survived the break up with the love of my life. I gave myself to him completely so the breakup was the hardest thing ive been through yet. I lost myself in the relationship. All in. So getting myself back was and continues to be a journey. Still my favorite song.
My interpretation of this video, and the song itself, is the idea of becoming overly vengeful. Of holding spite against people for every little thing they do, even things they can’t help like their ‘Hairdo making you feel ill’ or ‘Buzzing like a fridge’. The singer wants the ‘Karma Police’ to catch up with everyone he holds these grudges against, hence the video being the relentless chase of a perfectly average guy for seemingly no reason. It’s letting yourself fall into a cycle of anger and losing yourself to spite you can’t let go of. And you’re just in the backseat, letting these intrusive thoughts take the wheel. By the time the singer wakes up and realises ‘For a minute there, I lost myself’, karma begins to catch back up with him, following the destructive path he’s left behind (The fire chasing the gas trail). But he gets out of the car just in time, getting out of that vicious cycle and realising that a life holding grudges is no life at all. I love this band
@@comet6comet yah lol, the song was an inside joke where they had something called the "karma police" They would do something like look at eachother weirdly the mention "they are going to call the karma police" ig the girl with a Hitler haircut is a weird imagery of a "weird face" . Good ass song tho
To me this song is about running away from the fears and anxities caused by other people who have leverage over you...your boss, your coworkers, a significant other, living in fear because you dont live up to others expectations...this is the man running from the car. 'I gave it all he can, but its not enough' Then realizing that other people cant define you, only you can. The guy on the road collaspes from exhaustion, but then confronts the car chasing him, lights the match (with the embryo, signifying he's had this with him his whole life but didnt realize it until now) and starts to live his life on his terms. Not worrying about others' peoples projections. 'For a minute there I lost myself' its easy to forget who you are, when all you care about is the opinion of other people and their projections on to you. Break those chains, determine your own destiny. Thanks Thom
thankyou for making me not the only one who feels nostalgia I never had.... Radiohead makes me reflect on a place that I'm from and it makes me feel like I'm looking around slowly and sometimes making up memories or merging them together

I'd be honored if some Radiohead fans would take a listen to my acoustic piano & vocal performances of HIGH & DRY, as well as VIRTUAL INSANITY by Jamiroquai and BITTERSWEET SYMPHONY by the Verve on my YT channel in tribute to 3 of the greatest 90s bands. Live acoustic with no autotune. Thanks and peace out.
Was just in jail for a year and this song would constantly get played on the TV on music choice rock hits while we were locked in our cells and I grew to enjoy it very much. It's a really cool set of chord progressions to rot away to..all the way down to the end
I love the deeper meaning in such a simple video. Notice how Thom is in the backseat and never makes eye contact with the driver. He represents the voice in our heads that spites people and unfairly criticizes others. It’s like he’s convincing the driver to chase the man in the road. Then as the driver is retreating from the fire, he looks over and Thom is nowhere to be found. He now has to pay for his actions. That’s karma.
I also like to think of the gasoline trail as the “setting yourself up for problems” idea when it comes to overly spiteful people. Sometimes people create problems for themselves when they have nothing to be spiteful about, or in the case here they unknowingly sabotage themselves because they relied too much on their inner thoughts. The driver in the video is already in the car, so the only one who could’ve caused the gas trail would’ve been Thom, who takes the rule of the intrusive thoughts of spite. It’s like when you say or do something out of frustration or anger that gets used back at you later. You set yourself up for that one.
weird just watching 3 body problem heard the song when the alien stabs the guy in the neck , goes on youtube to listen . randomly scrolled through the comments and your was the first i read , freaky

Im supposed to surround myself with "positive energy" but sometimes I just think fuck it and choose to stay in that negative realm. This song is how I feel
+Raiken Xion - Well, you could have chosen a worse song to listen to. The song is actually really fucking wise, if my interpretation of it is correct, and call me an optimist, but I find the way the song leaves off to be kind of hopeful. Like yeah, the narrator fucked up, but he caught himself in the end and I like to think he smartened up and became a better person for it.
Reiko K I agree, its funny but how you can feel sometimes, I can be so up and down that I listen to a song like this but its like I just need to feel it, even if it may have a negative vibe about. Its not easy being positive all the while especially with all the shit in this world that can bring you down.
+Raiken Xion - I agree, and I'm the same way. Being positive is something I have to really work at, and like you said, it's hard because of all the horrible shit that happens (on both a personal and universal level). I actually stopped listening to a lot of bands/artists for that reason. I realized a long time ago that I wasn't doing myself any favors by listening to things that only made me feel sadder/angrier/destructive/etc, so I try to listen to stuff with more positive/hopeful vibes. Unfortunately, it's the sad/despondent/angry music that resonates most with me 90% of the time. The happier/preppy shit is awesome, too, but they don't speak to me as deeply, and don't feel as "real." Anyway, I'm obsessed with this song right now so I listen to it all the time, but I generally try to limit how much Radiohead I listen to (certain songs, anyway, like Paranoid Android, etc), because sometimes it feels like I can drown in their music, if that makes sense.
Reiko K Makes total sense and I completely agree with what you say, I also seem to connect more with the sad kind of depressing (If I can say) type music. I think its about exploring the soul, our human nature and facing things within us, not just all about the nice, pleasant things, because in reality not everything is rosy and sweet, no matter how much some people like to believe. But I do think its important not to get too much into really dark, depressing music, like grime and some really hardcore rock heavy metal. That to me just sounds like noise not "music". I know everyones different but particular songs and music of that genre can really put you in a dark place, and I think its just quite dangerous to surround yourself with too much negativity, cause can really mess with your head, cause people to do some crazy things, especially if they're doing some hard drugs at sametime, dangerous combination.
+Reiko K Holy shit I just had an epiphany today and realized the music I listened to was kind of depressing me and then I read your comment. I feel you man
Little aside. I literally spun out my car on an oil patch on a wet road the first time I heard this song on radio. Survived it undamaged other than a slight loss of confidence in my driving skills but it was a moment for sure.
MY FAILURE!? MY FAILURE!? I tore down the gates of my victims and took my glittering prize. Why? Because I WANTED it. And you? You have the world in your very fingers and all you can think to do with it is!"
To anybody that comes from Invincible, please listen to the rest of Radiohead's music, everything you feel in this song features heavily in their entire discography, even more. I recommend starting with the album Ok Computer.
Absolutely. Full catalogue of absolute gems. Though I’d recommend starting with The Bends. But they have truly evolved with every record- actually becoming less fatalistic with each iteration. Weird fishes is my all time jam- “I’m a fish now”- which comes in a later work- Seperator, I think- but it’s proof of the continuity of evolution- brings me so much joy- we’re all fish too just swimming around but feel like tadpoles or snails swirling and crawling below all the other fishes. King of Limbs is outstanding, even within their A+ entire catalogue. My favorite at the moment but that constantly changes. Just don’t dive in with Kid-A, lol. Brilliant and more beautiful with every listen. But that’s more of a dessert course. But who on earth would complain about viewing any Picasso- dude could paint picture perfect portraits if he so chose. Thom can sing at a very highly technical level across many ranges as well- just check out “I’ve seen it all” from Dancer in the Dark- duet with Bjork where she is actually equaled or even outshined imo.
@@Morswin1 If you're calling them overrated, that's because you haven't explored their music. When you're saying "overrated" here, you really mean "I don't really like Radiohead." That's fine, but that doesn't mean the band is overrated.
@@greatBLT I reckon it's more so "I don't really like Radiohead because I haven't given it a shot because i like to hate on anything popular or critically acclaimed"
A buddy of mine and I used to get high back in the early 2ks and he would play OK Computer and Kid A cover to cover at least once a week. He loved that shit. I though it was eh... Alright. It's not BAD but I never felt it was anything to write home about and with the amount of hype that Radiohead fans give it... Yeah. Its kinda like Tool. If you listen to the amount that their fans hype them up as these cerebral super deep musical geniuses. Then yeah... Definitely overrated. I'd give them a fair C+ or B-. I'm not in a hurry to change the channel, and every now and again I like to hear a song by them but not too often.
The car in the video is a 1976-1978 Chrysler new Yorker brougham. I had the same car as my first ever car, I bought it from my great grandfather. It was exactly like this one in the video except it had red leather seats instead of red cloth. I miss that car so much!
This music video has been ingrained in my memory since teen years, but I just wanna take a step back for a second and appreciate how fucking good it is. The tension, the twist at the end, how perfectly it matches the song, and the technical challenge of that last shot. It's one of the best music videos I've ever seen.
"For a minute there I lost myself" One of the most beautiful musical phrases I've heard I often feel like the guy running and the guy in the car is my responsibilities "For a minute there i lost myself".... Immortal line !!

I love how the man at the end changes the entire situation using his mind and logic in a dangerous time and faces his fears head on. As a person suffering from 15 years of severe social anxiety it can feel like this sometimes trying to recover. Sad I only just heard this song today for the first time. I love it.
I love when the premise of a music video makes you think just as much as the song does. I remember watching this on MTV in the 90s at 12yo. Blew my mind!
i think thats why he didnt just move out of the car’s way. you could see the exact moment in his face that he realized the way he’s gonna fix this. its great.

During my time in the military I’ve seen some bad men doing bad shit and I wasn’t allowed to stop it. This song always came to mind. Every time. Thought of the evil doers and those stopping the good guys from intervening
Radiohead know everything. Especially about you. Yes, _you_ - the person reading these words in this exact moment. I know you're there. _They_ know you're there. And they're coming. _Right_ now. NOT when I wrote this - _NOW_ . THEY'RE HERE. OPEN THE DOOR.
I'm only a fetus and I can already distinguish that my taste in music is much better than all of the other unborn humans. All of the other fetuses are listening to digestion noises, but I know that is just modern garbage. I listen to the BEST music which has soul and meaning because my undeveloped brain can conceptualize such things.
In the video, yorke is portrayed as a man who is being driven in a car as a passenger, tiredly chasing after a man who’s running for his life. I think yorke is supposed to symbolize karma, and whether it appears to be present or not it will always be there. You can run but you can’t hide, karma catches up eventually, no matter who you are. You get what you give in this life, what goes around comes around. I think the car and the driver are supposed to symbolize the other person/side of the situation. Some people want to take karma into their own hands (the driver chasing the man down) but in the end of the video karma caught right back up to the driver and the car caught fire. That’s why yorke (karma) was no longer in the back seat. Karma got the guy running, oh how he ran to try and get away. But yorke had gone once the man caught up to him, and it came right back to the driver. Because karma always catches you, and too many people think they need to avenge themselves against the people who wronged them to force them their karma themselves, but in reality karma catches up regardless, so if you chose to do someone wrong because they did you wrong then you’re just gonna get your karma for it anyways. Karma is on nobody’s side. So just as much as it was chasing this guy trying to hide from it, karma caught up to the driver for chasing the guy in the first place. That’s why when ppl do you dirty you just gotta let it be, karma always catches up to them in different shapes and forms. Always.
I have spent hours of my life thinking about this song so I thought I should have my take on the meaning. First off, the song is not from the perspective of Thom or the car, basically, but instead from inside of the chased man’s head. He’s grown annoyed with life and frustrated with himself and is taking it out on the people around him, thinking that annoying, know-it-all coworker or the young, ‘trendy’ girl or whomever it seems it is at that moment; he pushes his problems off on other people, making excuses for why the people who annoyed him or wronged him with how they are truly better than him in some ways, saying “the Karma Police will come get ‘em.” Later, he’s pushed it off too far and has no one to blame but himself, realizing he was the one to blame for his failures, quickly falling off of his own ‘stable’ plane of reality, yelling “I’ve given all I can, it’s not enough,” and preparing for the “this is what you’ll get” that he has bestowed upon others. He realizes he is to blame for his own failures, but is able to regain control of himself and his life, after he so lost himself, moving on with his life for the better from this period of blame and hatred and cynicism. The music video ends with the man setting the car on fire, burning off that part of his mind, killing the karma police that have plagued his mind and ability to live his life. I think this could apply to all of us, as sometimes we let the karma police decide what’s right and wrong, and allow ourselves to make excuses. But what humanity needs is to get out of this rut, and to find ourselves, not letting others define your own successes, and instead believing in yourself. Thank you for coming to my TED-Talk. Edit: It seems I sparked a major philosophical discussion in the replies below; I love that so much. This isn’t supposed to be a definitive answer, just one person’s ideas. I encourage anyone to discuss this kinda stuff if you find it interesting or you have your own ideas.
Nice philosophy but Karma is beyond it. It's beyond the simplistic Good vs Bad, Right vs Wrong philosophy. These philosophies are impure, adulterated, Westernised and Speculated versions of the Eastern one. And such speculation and assumptions are just blatant ignorance and abuse of the original pure teachings in Eastern spirituality.
@@abk9203 "Karma is beyond it. It's beyond the simplistic Good vs Bad, Right vs Wrong" How is Karma beyond good vs bad? I thought Karma was all about what goes around, comes around. If you put out good energy in the world, then good energy will come back to you and vice versa.
All my life only liked 3 songs from Radiohead, I used to listen to those songs many years ago. At this moment of my life I’ve been feeling really sad, I’ve got a job I hate, just finished a relationship with an incredible woman for things I didn’t notice were hurtful, and difficult moments in our paths. Still love her, and I know she loves me, but sometimes it is just difficult, it is what it is. I’m felling really stuck lately, nothing feels right to be honest. I play the piano, and just finished a cover of Karma Police, and decided to listen to more of their songs and I’m speechless, I never really knew how much I needed Radiohead until now. Despite of many people saying Radiohead is depressive, this band has helped me these days to stay more positive about the future, and be grateful for all I have, I’m not happy right now but I’m confident everything’s going to be better soon. Thanks, Radiohead ❤️🩹

Beautyful reason 4 a sad song. :)
I'm sorry for y'all's losses but am praying for you. Stay strong
Makes me cry.
wow dude, so good analysis of the way than Tom sing, I had already noticed that inflection in Tom's voice when he sings the final part, I listened to him as if there was a desperation in his singing but I always thought it was my imagination hehehehe, now I know that Tom did it intentionally because there are already several who we noticed, greetings ;)
Exactly, it seems to me that there could be two songs. The i lost myself part is such a great countdown to the end that you feel sad it is only part of one song.
I always scream my heart out along those lyrics when im alone- its so damn liberating
💛
I think about the end a lot.
Originally I thought that this video was just okay. But when you really think about this video; a tired man who's about to give up being chased and most likely about to get run over.....and at the last moment he finds a way to beat this car that has most likely been chasing him for many many miles.
We don't realize that we have more power than we actually do, even however small it may seem we can make a difference and something as small as a match can help us overcome our darkest moments. It's genius. I can't believe I never thought about it until a few months ago. Great music video.
Tom York is A Ghost?
Tom York Desapear in Car
@@josecarlossilva944 yes that too
@@josecarlossilva944I think it’s more so that Thom represents spite. It’s karma.

I listen to this song 1.25x. Its the only way i can really think its nice
@@adonaiyah2196 What do you think of it at normal speed?
I lose myself all the time. Itll take a while before I know who I truly am
I just let one go and she overdosed days later....ugh, I told her you lost yourself....

Thanks Thom

That’s karma.
toufuckinch’e !
There is no driver

The happier/preppy shit is awesome, too, but they don't speak to me as deeply, and don't feel as "real."
Anyway, I'm obsessed with this song right now so I listen to it all the time, but I generally try to limit how much Radiohead I listen to (certain songs, anyway, like Paranoid Android, etc), because sometimes it feels like I can drown in their music, if that makes sense.

To anybody that comes from Invincible, please listen to the rest of Radiohead's music, everything you feel in this song features heavily in their entire discography, even more. I recommend starting with the album Ok Computer.
Idc i came for the invincible song only idc about radiohead its and overrated band

This music video has been ingrained in my memory since teen years, but I just wanna take a step back for a second and appreciate how fucking good it is. The tension, the twist at the end, how perfectly it matches the song, and the technical challenge of that last shot. It's one of the best music videos I've ever seen.
@Hunter Vonnegut Mate, stop spamming your band all over this video?
This song is depressing, reassuring, and comforting. It makes me calm.

I love how the man at the end changes the entire situation using his mind and logic in a dangerous time and faces his fears head on. As a person suffering from 15 years of severe social anxiety it can feel like this sometimes trying to recover. Sad I only just heard this song today for the first time. I love it.
Oh, that's awesome! Hearing it on "Invincible" made me realize how much I love it, and I'm glad people are discovering it!

I love when the premise of a music video makes you think just as much as the song does. I remember watching this on MTV in the 90s at 12yo. Blew my mind!
Hey man don’t know how old you are but until you get hit by a bus or something there is always time to approve keep that in mind.
i think thats why he didnt just move out of the car’s way. you could see the exact moment in his face that he realized the way he’s gonna fix this. its great.
ever find a song on the internet and realize that you deeply recognize the tune from your childhood? every radiohead song is like that for me. guess my parents play a lot of it
Same exact thing for me, my parents listened to it a lot when I was a kid and I didn't really take notice, but now I remember all of the tunes

During my time in the military I’ve seen some bad men doing bad shit and I wasn’t allowed to stop it. This song always came to mind. Every time.
Thought of the evil doers and those stopping the good guys from intervening
Sorry to hear this man, you did what you could, unfortunately in reality sometimes it isn’t much…. Thank you for your service.
The guy who directed this videoclip, Jonathan Glazer, is an oscar nominated director !
yeah i came here because i just found out he directed this music video lol, im a huge glazer fan
Thanks for the info! I’m looking forward to see the zone of interest what a coincidence
There are similarities between this and Under The Skin as well. His artistic vision is impressive
And now he's an Oscar Winner!

I don’t think Radiohead knows how much they help people get through life. This band is the reason i am alive. This band is just everything.

Radiohead know everything. Especially about you. Yes, _you_ - the person reading these words in this exact moment. I know you're there. _They_ know you're there. And they're coming. _Right_ now. NOT when I wrote this - _NOW_ . THEY'RE HERE. OPEN THE DOOR.

In my opinion this is their best song
Their music are very nice. This song is special :)

My 18 yo. Listening to you 2024. Real music prevails.
Always.
Fuck dude. Are you a writer
This is brilliantly stated.
I think its a karma for corrupt police,...??
ý
This is what you'll get when you mess with us.
I encourage anyone to discuss this kinda stuff if you find it interesting or you have your own ideas.
this needs more likes
I like your take
Nice philosophy but Karma is beyond it.
I think the guy running is the man in the Man of War video
@@abk9203 "Karma is beyond it. It's beyond the simplistic Good vs Bad, Right vs Wrong"
How is Karma beyond good vs bad?

The deep bass tones in this song have always haunted me. Love it.
The bass lines are my favorite section of this song. I learn bass like 5 years ago and this song was the first one. Its not easy, but learnable. Man does it feel good. Especially the outro. The last 10 notes 👌🏿

Honestly, out of all the Radiohead songs I've listened to since I was introduced to them when I was little. This one in particular has to be one of my most favourites, I could listen to it on repeat for hours. Such a classic.
I can't believe how this song has mesmerized me in 1997 and all these years later when I listen to it,this song takes me back to every emotion, every feeling, and every thought I experienced all those years ago. It is absolutely magical and marvelous. Rideo head produced a masterpiece of contemporary music.
