This video is actually very profound. For those that don't understand the music video, it's the story of the circus freak that looks up to the aerials performers. He closes his eyes and imagines a world where he is wealthy and powerful, however, his limited knowledge of real life frustrates him even in his imagination, like when he is questioned by the other kid.
This goes in hand to the lines "When you loose small mind you free your life / when you fee your life eternal prize"
What that basically means is that our limited perception, like that kid's, holds us captive. If we are able to confront our perceptions of life we'll get the eternal prize, which is happiness.

+GypsyFairy85 it's very explicitly told in the video if you follow it's story.

    • @BalthorYT

I think that's fairly accurate, one detail though, the lyrics are "when you free your eyes eternal prize". Which basically emphasizes what you said about perception.

Swimming through the void, we hear the word
We lose ourselves, but we find it all

And we are the ones that want to choose
Always want to play but you never want to lose
    Aerials in the sky
When you lose small mind, you free your life
    Life is a waterfall
    We drink from the river
Then we turn around and put up our walls
Swimming through the void, we hear the word
We lose ourselves, but we find it all

Always want to go, but you never want to stay

The meaning of the song, I think:
It's about how people get sucked into materialistic culture. They get obsessed with fame and popularity and money. They become like this kid, altered beyond human recognition (plastic surgery being the most direct example) in an effort to try to be perfect in the eyes of society. They lure you in from childhood by convincing you that this is what success looks like, but the kid isn't happy because this doesn't make you happy. This - money, fame, being a celebrity - isn't success at all. To be happy, you have to "lose small mind". You have to see past this small picture of earning and buying and getting famous, and find your real purpose in life and do what fulfils you. Only then will you claim eternal prize. True value. Because after all, life is a waterfall. Just a small flash of activity where we all get to be unique. Before and after the waterfall. Before we're born and after we die; we're all the same. We can't take any of our money or fans out of this life. They get lost and forgotten one way or another. That's what makes these things useless. But during the waterfall, all we can honestly do is be happy, find peace, and try not to lose ourselves.
For a band who almost exclusively focuses on worldwide issues, this is a very personal song. That's what makes it special. It's a personal message to each and every one of you to see past the facade and live for yourself.

this comment from "boxes" is epic !
System of a Down has had alot of political backlash in usa and uk due to belif=efs alot like the dixie chicks and their country vs the gw bush etc etc republican stuff or anti this or anti that
in my personal belief system of a down is a musical group thats convinced the system doesnt work however its projection is to fail meaning corporate global destiny is resulting in failure as a product
AND THATS WHAT MAKES THEM SO AWESOME they cant be fooled they cant be controlled and they know it and love it and its what fuels Americans and humans of all races -just sayin
we grow thru failure (wright brothers) and continue to push through even though this world is terminal
if you need more explanation IQ higher than me seek out Marylin Manson hell educate all just as he has his interviewers

This song fucked my shit up man, here is my interpretation of the song for those who care (below):
Life is a waterfall -Life is a never ending journey
We're one in the river, -One before we find ourselves
And one again after the fall.-one after we find ourselves
Swimming through the void -going through life
We hear the word,-We hear our calling
We lose ourselves;-We forget our close minded way of thinking
But we find it all? -We find ourselves (peace within)
Cause we are the ones that wanna play, -As humans we want to do as we please
Always wanna go, -Always want to do
But you never wanna stay, -Never want to face the reality (consequences)
And we are the ones that wanna choose, -Choose what to believe and what rules to go by
Always wanna play, -always want to do
But you never wanna lose. -never want to face the reality (consequences)
Aerials, in the sky, -Lost people, looking for a cause. Bending what they think is right and wrong in life
When you lose small mind, -when you open your mind
You free your life. -you find yourself
Life is a waterfall,-Life is a never ending journey
We drink from the river, -We obey what we are told
Then we turn around and put up our walls.-Then we defend what we are made to believe
Swimming through the void-going through life
We hear the word, -we hear our calling (find our purpose)
We lose ourselves, -forgetting our close minded way of thinking
But we find it all? - We find ourselves (peace within)
Cause we are the ones that wanna play,-As humans we want to do as we please
Always wanna go,-Always want to do
But you never wanna stay; -Never want to face the reality (consequences)
And we are the ones that wanna choose,-Choose what to believe and then pick and choose what rules we want to go by in that belief
Always wanna play, -Always want to do
But you never wanna lose. -Never want to face reality
Aerials, in the sky, -lost ones (the close minded)
When you lose small mind, -When you open your mind
You free your life. -you find peace (find yourself)
Aerials, so up high, -lost ones (close minded)
When you free your eyes, -when you see life for what it is
Eternal prize. -you are granted the best gift one can have (happiness)
Aerials, in the sky,-lost ones (the close minded)
When you lose small mind,-when you open your mind
You free your life.-you find yourself
Aerials, so up high, -lost ones (the close minded)
When you free your eyes,-when you see life for what it is
Eternal prize. -you are granted the best gift one can have (happiness)
Tell me what you think about it (and maybe make your own ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) )

swimming through the void we hear the word , we lose ourselves but we find it all.... ( we lose our souls to acquire fleshly pleasures )
cause we are the ones that want to play , always want to go but you never want to stay
and we are the ones that want to choose ,always want to play but you never want to lose ( we want to manipulate our own lives and future but dont wanna live with the consequences )
aerials, in the sky when you lose small mind you free your life ( when you stop paying attention to frivolous things, such as material things, you start seeing life for what it is )
Kinda difficult to put it all into words...

+Romeo Teixeira We are the ones that want to choose, always want to play but never want to loose.
When you loose small mind you free your life.
From another, "Mutability is a tragedy but it's also our hope: the worst of times like the best, are always passing away."
Loose small mind and see in fourspace. Fourspace is the past, present, future at once, as well as the multitudinous possibilities that did not happen in your experience but which might have happened had the butterfly flapped it's wings.... etc.
In fourspace we see that suffering is not the enemy of pleasure but rather the other side of the same sensation. Both serve to move us. They are not the destination. Man has fallen by forgetting the dual nature of all things.
While it may be desirable to move away from pain and while it may be desirable to move towards pleasure, one must understand that these forces are temporal in nature and only serve to move us in our lives. If we are to stay in pleasure, we must fight the nature of time. A loosing battle for sure.

For those of you that dont get the video: The kid is a Circus freak and he envies the Aerial Performers, he then imagines a world where everyone looks up to him, but he isn't happy with this world given his lack of understanding of the real world (when he confronts the child reporter). "When you free your eyes, eternal prize" - We have to stop looking up to the "aerials of our world", The eternal prize is happiness.

      @pao_lumu 9 ปีที่แล้ว +36

Wow. Never thought of that! That actually explains most of the lyrics! "Life is a waterfall/ We're one in the river and one again after the fall" refers to the gene pool (or just the general reproductive populous) I believe.
Some of us fall fast, some slowly. But all fall.

AKgamer IsAwesome I will point you to roughly _every fucking other music video in the history of EXISTENCE_ for that one.
      Crossing genres!
Imagine Dragons - Radioactive: Muppet bear thing?
Katy Perry - Dark Horse: Egyptian Mouse dancers girls?
Hell, even SOAD's own BYOB has robots invading a club.
"Circus in the middle of nowhere" is run-of-the-mill in comparison to... Whatever the fuck pop artists dream up.

Alfredo Benavides A lot of stuff points to what you're saying, "Drink from the river, then turn around and put up your walls" to me means that people want to take without any consequence,or it could mean to benefit from other's help and then shut those people out. "Always want to play but you never want to lose" suggests that these people looking up to the 'aerials' want what they have, but aren't ready to take on the risk of failing or facing their struggles. Also "we lose ourselves but we find it all" is saying that although they got what the aerials have, they're no longer who they once were.

I know what you mean. I grew up in the 90s. When our High school held a talent show, two-thirds of the boys and girls would either sing crappy songs from boybands or the Spice Girls while the others would sing crappy R&B love songs. Me and my friends were inspired by Nirvana's Unplugged concert, so we formed a band and played 3 of their songs, also unplugged. The whole school don't even know who was Nirvana.
