This video is actually very profound. For those that don't understand the music video, it's the story of the circus freak that looks up to the aerials performers. He closes his eyes and imagines a world where he is wealthy and powerful, however, his limited knowledge of real life frustrates him even in his imagination, like when he is questioned by the other kid. This goes in hand to the lines "When you loose small mind you free your life / when you fee your life eternal prize" What that basically means is that our limited perception, like that kid's, holds us captive. If we are able to confront our perceptions of life we'll get the eternal prize, which is happiness.
I think that's fairly accurate, one detail though, the lyrics are "when you free your eyes eternal prize". Which basically emphasizes what you said about perception.
My first time hearing this song by both System and MGK. I’ve been an MGK fan for years but I gotta say, K butchered the ever loving soul of this song. Please don’t do it again K. Lawdy

The fallen ones in the black void in the earth Hell. They hear Gods word in the blackness and realize they lost there souls. Now they sorrowfully remember when they flew so high with the other angels. Now they vengefully want to trick you to join them in there damnation!
I absolutely love this song. Something in the drumming is so sentimental, so soft, and so expressive, which seems to be such an emotional thread throughout the song. I cannot help but try to ruin my speakers with this whenever it comes on the playlist, I love it that much.
One of those songs where you need a breather after air-drumming in the car in the driveway. Not because it is exhaustive, but because it is so all-encompassing. This song moves something.

In my opinion, this song is about how the ego takes over our world which is what causes us to feel dissociated from the natural world. The natural world that has everything we need as a species to survive, rather than the corporate greed that is fueled by the ego that is destroying the entire world.
Yes and no, it's also about the spiritual essence of perfection. When you realize no one is perfect you also see we are all the same. From dust you were born and to dust you shall return. It's to view everyone as equals
that opening guitar riff is so haunting that it sends chills down my spine..and John Dolmayan is such an underrated drummer man he hits that snare and high hat with such precision it reminds me of John Bonham.
System Of A Down is truly one of the best bands that ever existed. They had it all. Aggression, Softness, Harmonies, Melodies, Rhythm, Meaning. Pure Power. Perfection. I wish I would have seen them live.
Saw them the final tour they came to Vancouver, Canada. Amazing show but you could tell they weren't on good terms, almost no interaction with the crowd, more or less came out playing and played until it was over. Still sounded insane though, this song live was so good.
My daughter was born with asthma and would cry alot. This was the only song I could get to her to calm down or sleep! She still loves this song, 5yrs later!
The night my dad passed away... i was driving home and this song came on... it was my most notable moment of coming to peace with him being gone... thank you for this masterpiece

I still consider this one a best from them. The sinister yet graceful tone in the instruments is always jaw dropping to me, and Serj's vocals really bring this whole track together
grew up in a really religious home where everything was censored and music was only instrumental. 27 years old and i'm just now discovering system of a down. this is just magic. Edit: Thanks for the amazing comments and suggestions :)

SOAD is probably the only nu metal band to go classic. The creativity, the poetry of its lyrics and the references are unique within that genre, it's not just teenage depression turned into boring riffs.

Yeah, Chopsuey was fire, and Toxicity had y’all thinking. But this song was the most important song on the album imo. This was such a fire video and such a great ending to such a masterpiece of an album.
this one and all the other songs from SOAD. it's like a teenage comeback that never gets old and, just like you said, it gets better and better with age.
The amount of views System of a Down has on their most popular songs is a testament that their music has transcended just being popular for the time.. they are one of only like 100 bands who can escape into timelessness… and I’d say they are in the top 5 Hard Rock/Metal Bands of all time
This bend is one of the best. They among others bends save my life so many time. Fom losing my father, divorce to healing of cancer.... They made me go on and belive in my self. Thank you S. O. A. D.
I saw them back in maybe 2002 thinking there was no way Serj could pull it off live. I was so wrong. They were incredible. I've recently been learning how to sing for real and it makes me appreciate Serj even more. Such incredible range and power.
this comment from "boxes" is epic ! System of a Down has had alot of political backlash in usa and uk due to belif=efs alot like the dixie chicks and their country vs the gw bush etc etc republican stuff or anti this or anti that in my personal belief system of a down is a musical group thats convinced the system doesnt work however its projection is to fail meaning corporate global destiny is resulting in failure as a product AND THATS WHAT MAKES THEM SO AWESOME they cant be fooled they cant be controlled and they know it and love it and its what fuels Americans and humans of all races -just sayin we grow thru failure (wright brothers) and continue to push through even though this world is terminal if you need more explanation IQ higher than me seek out Marylin Manson hell educate all just as he has his interviewers however this comment is from a true fan who isnt caught u in the controversy at all well said
My mom told me the same that it was like listening to the album how good they were live I wanted to see them so bad was too young when they were touring all kinds and idk if I’ll get the chance to see em before they stop for good

Just great music. I'm not usually into harder, "metal" music tho this is so distinctive, unique anyway. Think I can appreciate nearly all kinds of music. Even Call Me Maybe tho I've said that already. (Anyway I like the TT memes they do about it. I will do you dirty if you come up on me)
I have been listening to this song for over a decade now, I even learned how to play guitar because of system, still coming back to this song gives me chills after the second hook

@@tiyanahweber9684 man I used to absolutely hate metal just a few years ago, but I've been tryna grow a musical ear recently and the more I learn about drumming and music production, the more I've been learning to appreciate rock and metal, its seriously awesome, just dipping my toes for now with some SOAD and breaking Benjamin and a lil bit of Metallica, this kinda music is really growing on me
This is one of the most addicting songs I have ever heard... It gets stuck in my head and I just need to listen to this everyday. Absolutely a wonderful song and we gotta thank system of a down for creating such beautiful art.
This song is about how people can lose their identities and become just like everyone else. Some lyric analysis: "Life is a waterfall,we're one in the river, one again after the fall." - We all start off the same and we all end up the same. "Swimming through the void, we hear the words,we lose ourselves, but we find it all." - As we go through life we are told lessons, but we ignore them. We forget who we really are in the mix of seeking the synthetic lifestyle, and that's the price to lose who we really are. "'Cause we are the ones that wanna play, always want to go, but you never want to stay." - We always want to be part of the scene. We strive for what we want and when we get it, it still does not satisfy. "And we are the ones that want to choose, always wanna play, but you never wanna lose." - We want and want. We do whatever we can but if trouble is ever near we do whatever we can to maintain innocence. "When you lose small mind you free your life." - When we stop to see the full picture is when we really have control of our lives. "Life is a waterfall, we drink from the river then we turn around and put up our walls." - We take and take and in the end we give nothing. This shows how greedy, oblivious and inconsiderate people can be.
I remember when I was a teenager, I was just learning how to speak english, and at that time my uncle really liked these songs, he showed them to me and I started writing the lyrics just to practice. Now that Ive finished my courses and im able to teach to other people and give english classes, I will always remember how greatly these songs helped me.
There comes a time when you start listening to SOAD again and you realize that they haven't released a single weak song and you experience each individual song even more deeply and you start to wonder if this is a legendary band that generations are growing up on. Just pure amazing how good this band is. Impressive.
God i discovered this band last year when i started getting into metal and its my most favourite band ever. So glad i discovered this band in my teens and i will definetly be looking back when im like 26 or 30 or somthing lol
Потому что система сша заточена под раскрытие талантов, ради этого страна и создавалась - собирать все самое лучшее и самое талантливое что есть в мире. Поэтому сша всегда будет лидером.
SOAD's music is only becoming more relevant as we progress on this timeline. Timeless art. I discovered them when i was around 16 and now a decade later the lyrics hit on a whole different level. So much appreciation and respect for these guys 💛
You have a gray hybrid with a man, and you all opened your mouths. The new format of a slave then wants to drain you into the sewers in the literal sense. But these they think will be submissive and survivable, and they say they will eat less than you. In a word, a gray alien from a flask grown like. This is how you sleep sweetly with sleep, the devils will eat you.
Same. I was introduced to this song by my brother back when i was like 8-9 yo and it was super creepy. My brother passed away 6 years ago and this song reminds of him, in a good way at least.
The characterization of build and fall in 4 mins is DEFINITELY the best in music. It feels like a movie, even if you don't watch the video, the song FEELS like an EPIC story being built with backstory, build, a fight, even a crescendo, then fall.
The meaning of the song, I think: It's about how people get sucked into materialistic culture. They get obsessed with fame and popularity and money. They become like this kid, altered beyond human recognition (plastic surgery being the most direct example) in an effort to try to be perfect in the eyes of society. They lure you in from childhood by convincing you that this is what success looks like, but the kid isn't happy because this doesn't make you happy. This - money, fame, being a celebrity - isn't success at all. To be happy, you have to "lose small mind". You have to see past this small picture of earning and buying and getting famous, and find your real purpose in life and do what fulfils you. Only then will you claim eternal prize. True value. Because after all, life is a waterfall. Just a small flash of activity where we all get to be unique. Before and after the waterfall. Before we're born and after we die; we're all the same. We can't take any of our money or fans out of this life. They get lost and forgotten one way or another. That's what makes these things useless. But during the waterfall, all we can honestly do is be happy, find peace, and try not to lose ourselves. For a band who almost exclusively focuses on worldwide issues, this is a very personal song. That's what makes it special. It's a personal message to each and every one of you to see past the facade and live for yourself.
This is one of those bands that comes around every decade or two and just completely rips shit like no one else has before them, and no matter what, no one will ever come around that fills that exact same niche. Completely unique, even though they employ elements that other bands have before them, still no one does or will do what they do the same way again.
Pretty embarrassing to say I never listened to this song until I heard MGKs (shockingly bad) cover and wanted to hear what the actual song was like. I was familiar with the name System Of A Down before but never explored their stuff. And clearly I was missing out. This song is incredible and it’s one I will listen to again and again.
Listening to System of a Down's music is like embarking on a powerful journey through the realms of emotion and consciousness. Their unique blend of intense vocals, intricate melodies, and thought-provoking lyrics creates an experience that resonates deep within the heart. This video is not just a visual spectacle but a testament to the band's ability to evoke profound feelings. Thank you, System of a Down, for pouring your passion into your art and providing us with a soundtrack that touches the soul 💫💫
Am I the only one who gets eargasm from Serj's transition of voice from a higher pitched metallic voice to a warm and comforting voice in 1:22? "ALWAYS WANNA PLAY BUT YOU NEVER WANNA LOOOOoooooose".
im not sure why but this song has been in my head for the few days. a memorable piece of music. i am glad i found it here with others that have felt the same,
I can still remember the chill I felt the first time hearing this song, hearing the crescendo. I think I was in 8th grade when it came out. What a perfect song.
+Kostas Life is a waterfall, we are in the river and one again after the fall ( we all are all the same, evey1 has a beggining and en end, and lives their jorney with a different story but its all very alike: born, life , die ) swimming through the void we hear the word , we lose ourselves but we find it all.... ( we lose our souls to acquire fleshly pleasures ) cause we are the ones that want to play , always want to go but you never want to stay and we are the ones that want to choose ,always want to play but you never want to lose ( we want to manipulate our own lives and future but dont wanna live with the consequences ) aerials, in the sky when you lose small mind you free your life ( when you stop paying attention to frivolous things, such as material things, you start seeing life for what it is ) Kinda difficult to put it all into words...
+Romeo Teixeira We are the ones that want to choose, always want to play but never want to loose. When you loose small mind you free your life. From another, "Mutability is a tragedy but it's also our hope: the worst of times like the best, are always passing away." Loose small mind and see in fourspace. Fourspace is the past, present, future at once, as well as the multitudinous possibilities that did not happen in your experience but which might have happened had the butterfly flapped it's wings.... etc. In fourspace we see that suffering is not the enemy of pleasure but rather the other side of the same sensation. Both serve to move us. They are not the destination. Man has fallen by forgetting the dual nature of all things. While it may be desirable to move away from pain and while it may be desirable to move towards pleasure, one must understand that these forces are temporal in nature and only serve to move us in our lives. If we are to stay in pleasure, we must fight the nature of time. A loosing battle for sure.
I sung this song for karaoke at my school. Half of the kids in there probably had no idea who the band was but I’m just proud I had the confidence to get on stage and sing an amazing song from such an amazing band.
I know what you mean. I grew up in the 90s. When our High school held a talent show, two-thirds of the boys and girls would either sing crappy songs from boybands or the Spice Girls while the others would sing crappy R&B love songs. Me and my friends were inspired by Nirvana's Unplugged concert, so we formed a band and played 3 of their songs, also unplugged. The whole school don't even know who was Nirvana.
Selene Valenzuela Omg! Me too! I had almost all their albums and would listen to them all the time in high school. I would find interviews and watch them regularly lol.
I was listening a Sri Narada mantra, and suddenly THIS song with THIS melody came to my mind. It reminded me when I was a teen, listening to SOAD on MTV 🤯
Quando eu estava passando por uma das fases mais tristes e solitárias na minha vida, essa banda me ajudou muito a me sentir melhor, a me recompor. Muito obrigado por tudo, system of a down. Vocês são foda!
I find that good metal sounds angry but always has a message behind it. What I get from this is that you shouldn't focus and dream on what you don't have, but rather enjoy and love what you do have. You might not be rich and famous, but you're still alive and well and have other things to live for. ... that's what I'm getting from this anyways.
My uncle just passed last week this song I remember I listened to with him 20 to 30 times in his truck and this whole album ,good times He always loved my music connection was like no other..
That guitar riff tho! Epic! Still to this day over 20 years later this track still kills it! Serj is such an amazing vocalist "When you lose small mind you free your life" such deep truths in his lyrics. Just brilliant!! :))
meanwhile i'm discovering these songs for the first time and i'm absolutely loving them why people no longer make songs like this today is a mystery to me, maybe i was just born in the wrong generation
@@Fogolol Ahhhh music always finds a way to those who seek truth my friend! I am excited for you to be discovering such awesomeness! This whole album is absolutely epic and legendary! Unforgettable!
@a While this band is a band that’s known for expressing their opinions, not everyone makes music to express messages. Some make music because they’re good at making music and they find it fun.
@@Gamer88334 then the message they're giving is "i like music" every music has a message, because it's art. the definiton of art is a way wich the artist can speak his perception of the world to other people be the message profound or not, it's still art, it still has a message fuck it, it can even be an inconsious message non intentional there are many ways of expressing yourself
I remember listening to this album start to finish every time my brother would drive me when we were young. He never was into music but he loved sharing SOAD with me. Will always hold a special part of my heart.
@@eliasekstrom6660 Well, food is something you need, music isn'. Us, people who aren't really into music, definitely have songs and artists that we like but don't enjoy it enough to listen to it and prefer to do other things. Lyrics:
Life is a waterfall
We're one in the river
And one again after the fall
Swimming through the void
We hear the word
We lose ourselves
But we find it all?
'Cause we are the ones that want to play
Always want to go
But you never want to stay
And we are the ones that want to choose
Always want to play
But you never want to lose
Aerials in the sky
When you lose small mind
You free your life
Life is a waterfall
We drink from the river
Then we turn around and put up our walls
Swimming through the void
We hear the word
We lose ourselves
But we find it all?
'Cause we are the ones that want to play
Always want to go
But you never want to stay
And we are the ones that want to choose
Always want to play
But you never want to lose
Aerials in the sky
When you lose small mind
You free your life
Aerials so up high
When you free your eyes
Eternal prize
Aerials in the sky
When you lose small mind
You free your life
Aerials so up high
When you free your eyes
Eternal prize

I absolutely love this song. Something in the drumming is so sentimental, so soft, and so expressive, which seems to be such an emotional thread throughout the song. I cannot help but try to ruin my speakers with this whenever it comes on the playlist, I love it that much.
One of those songs where you need a breather after air-drumming in the car in the driveway. Not because it is exhaustive, but because it is so all-encompassing. This song moves something.
The entire Toxicity album is amazing… but this song is just, absolute perfection. It will never get old and will always be relevant.

In my opinion, this song is about how the ego takes over our world which is what causes us to feel dissociated from the natural world. The natural world that has everything we need as a species to survive, rather than the corporate greed that is fueled by the ego that is destroying the entire world.
We are getting there, better and better through history. Love to you and yours ❤

John Bonham is actually one of John's main influences on the drums.

System of a Down has had alot of political backlash in usa and uk due to belif=efs alot like the dixie chicks and their country vs the gw bush etc etc republican stuff or anti this or anti that
in my personal belief system of a down is a musical group thats convinced the system doesnt work however its projection is to fail meaning corporate global destiny is resulting in failure as a product

we grow thru failure (wright brothers) and continue to push through even though this world is terminal

This song is about how people can lose their identities and become just like everyone else. Some lyric analysis:
"Life is a waterfall,we're one in the river, one again after the fall." - We all start off the same and we all end up the same.

Pablo Astini This IS one of the best songs ever.
The characterization of build and fall in 4 mins is DEFINITELY the best in music. It feels like a movie, even if you don't watch the video, the song FEELS like an EPIC story being built with backstory, build, a fight, even a crescendo, then fall.
Masterpiece, even all these years later, absolute anthem!
Всегда им будет
Cant believe this song is 15 years old and still such a banger!!!
The meaning of the song, I think:
It's about how people get sucked into materialistic culture.

Yes Brother it's true ❤
I can still remember the chill I felt the first time hearing this song, hearing the crescendo. I think I was in 8th grade when it came out. What a perfect song.
me too brother, I used to listen to this and Linkpark etc in highschool years. Good times
Now listen to MGKs cover hahaha

That's exactly what I got from this song

Life is a waterfall, we are in the river and one again after the fall ( we all are all the same, evey1 has a beggining and en end, and lives their jorney with a different story but its all very alike: born, life , die )
swimming through the void we hear the word , we lose ourselves but we find it all.... ( we lose our souls to acquire fleshly pleasures )
cause we are the ones that want to play , always want to go but you never want to stay
and we are the ones that want to choose ,always want to play but you never want to lose ( we want to manipulate our own lives and future but dont wanna live with the consequences )
aerials, in the sky when you lose small mind you free your life ( when you stop paying attention to frivolous things, such as material things, you start seeing life for what it is )
Kinda difficult to put it all into words...
+Romeo Teixeira We are the ones that want to choose, always want to play but never want to loose.
When you loose small mind you free your life.
From another, "Mutability is a tragedy but it's also our hope: the worst of times like the best, are always passing away."
Loose small mind and see in fourspace.
Listening to System of a Down can instantly return me to my time in the military.

Bravery often pays off in life. That is awesome.
Listen, if you ever lack confidence just know that no matter what you will sing it better than MGK did
This song has one of the most gorgeous System Of A Down melodies IMO, especially the "Aerials, in the sky......" part.
I'm leaving this comment here so that whenever someone likes it I get reminded to watch this masterpiece again and againnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn
During my teenage years I catched this video on MTV and recorded it on VHS. Watched it billion times. What a masterpiece of a song.
amazing
aqui no brasil na minha época era a mesma coisa , eu gravei todas do system!
Lucky and with good taste
I feel a lot of nostalgia with every system song
Selene Valenzuela hi how are you?
Selene Valenzuela
Right? Takes me right back to high school, but like, in a good way.
My dad listened to SOAD a lot when I was young so that's probably why I like them as much as I do.
Selene Valenzuela Omg! Me too! I had almost all their albums and would listen to them all the time in high school. I would find interviews and watch them regularly lol.
Toxicity was one of the last albums I listen to from front to back without skipping anything
This band has always been brilliant to me, and always will be.

Em 2020 eles voltaram e lançaram 2 músicas: "Protect the Land" e "Genocidal Humanoidz"
Legends die but are never forgotten.

I was listening a Sri Narada mantra, and suddenly THIS song with THIS melody came to my mind. It reminded me when I was a teen, listening to SOAD on MTV 🤯
I feel like SOAD is the kind of sound that will never repeat again in history (as many others). Unique!
Quando eu estava passando por uma das fases mais tristes e solitárias na minha vida, essa banda me ajudou muito a me sentir melhor, a me recompor. Muito obrigado por tudo, system of a down. Vocês são foda!
Umas das melhores músicas deles!!

Aconteceu o msm comigo, mas a banda que me salvou foi o Metallica... Só o metal pra ser tão poderoso a ponto de salvar vidas 🤘
Sometimes music is just the medicine for our pain.
The guitar and bass at 2:36 is absolutely iconic
I love the drum fills in between 😁
I find that good metal sounds angry but always has a message behind it. What I get from this is that you shouldn't focus and dream on what you don't have, but rather enjoy and love what you do have. You might not be rich and famous, but you're still alive and well and have other things to live for. ... that's what I'm getting from this anyways.
We lose ourselves , but we find it all … 🙌🏻🔥
Cause we are the ones that want To play always want to go but you never wanna stay
Truly an amazing song
I hope no pop-punk artist ruins it for generations to come
To late MGK tried it on Howard stern and it was a straight abomination 🤣
Yea it would be a real shame if a pink haired loser were to do a cover of this

He must have been a great man! Very sorry for your loss!
im sorry to hear that, glad your connection can live on through this music though.
This song fits in... on the album this song contains an armenian mourning song after the regular song.
this is so good but you must hear "Glory" by SLT !!!
It was heartwarming to hear about your Uncle. He is in a better place. May he rest in peace.

JD Bock eh maybe
theres alot, its hard to say
JD Bock imo it's definitely their best single, only rivaled by sugar and question, it could possibly be on the list
I would include Toxicity in their best singles; that's a masterpiece

Lowriders, metal and vocals like these? This is the best song by SOAD, honestly.
This isn't just music, this is expressing an important messege through a way of art.
that's the meaning of all music, um dum dum
@a While this band is a band that’s known for expressing their opinions, not everyone makes music to express messages. Some make music because they’re good at making music and they find it fun.
@@Gamer88334 then the message they're giving is "i like music"
every music has a message, because it's art. the definiton of art is a way wich the artist can speak his perception of the world to other people
be the message profound or not, it's still art, it still has a message
fuck it, it can even be an inconsious message
non intentional
there are many ways of expressing yourself
I understand what Xyberon want to explain and i agree.
I remember listening to this album start to finish every time my brother would drive me when we were young. He never was into music but he loved sharing SOAD with me. Will always hold a special part of my heart.
