    My dad was a mechanic and literally could fix anything. He was my hero and best friend. He died a few yrs ago at 73. I started watching Scotty after my father passed away and I’m so grateful to Scotty’s channel. He reminds me so much of my daddy and they don’t make good men like this anymore.     I have an 07 Silverado with the 4.8 L that I bought brand new. It has 398,000 miles with never a major failure. Just replaced alternator, battery and starter. Has had one spark plug change. Still runs like the day I bought it. Never a transmission problem.

    But I already have one with 293k and it has been reliable so far and I want to keep it. I paid that transmission price already and the original lasted 278k. Sure transmissions are expensive but so is buying another vehicle. I would say that 278k on an automatic that towed trailers for a lot of its miles is not bad.

      My 95 k1500 went to 335k with all original drivetrain and no fluid changes due to my ignorance but I sometimes wonder if it would of lasted a little longer. Truck has 371k as of right now and if I get it to 400k on the rebuild unit the truck already payed for itself.

      With the 80 in the 6l80 being a stronger nominal torque capacity
      Even though the newet engines produce more power.....

    This truck has a four-speed 4L60E trans which is known for these issues. The six-speed 6L80E transmissions rarely have issues. 4L60Es can be great as long as they care maintained. I just sold my 2013 Silverado and it had a 4L60E, I bought it with 159k miles and sold it with 190k miles with zero issues, and I only had it for almost two years. It was a great truck.

      Wish i didn't sell my '94. Sold it with 269,000 miles. Original clutch and timing belt. The guy i sold it to drove it for two more years, still same clutch and timing belt when he traded it in.

      Try to break that before the warranty is up. =Probably the reason they (GM) told her to keep driving it. Look into a lemon law lawyer to see if she can get it fixed right away. The dealer only sells you the car so dealer is only doing what GM tells it to do. You must take GM to court in order to get it fixed. =After the purchase the dealer has little to do.

    I have a 2005 GMC Sierra 1500 W/T, 4.3 liter V6 with a T5 (manual) transmission.
    Over 300,000 miles now, replaced the distributor because the neoprene gear wore out at 175,000 miles; went ahead and replaced the water pump and timing chain though they weren't broken. Otherwise, just a couple of tune-ups and countless oil changes, runs like a top.

    What he said is true about chevy transmissions... I had a 08 avalanche and the transmission issues started at 120,000 miles 😪

      Same here had a 2011 gmc and and older Chevy caravan and transmission in the gmc went out at 60k and the engine starting smoking at 70k in the Chevy. Both were maintained well too

      The manual will always say to change the fluid early, ignore the "life time" section of the manual and read closely. My 94 suburban says change every 15k miles if it's used in severe services (hint: all cars are severe service. Yes that means you). Neglecting tranny oil is a one way stop to catastrophe.

      Mine is 09 Silverado 4wd 1500 with 214k miles. Only recently has it been making a cranking noise when i shift it to reverse and turn the whole tire. You wouldn’t know what that would be?

    Still driving around my 03 Sierra 1500hd. Blew up the oe 6.0. Spent 5k for a new motor. That motor blew a heads casket. Spent $500 for a new water pump, fan and liquid head sealer. Installed in my driveway. Towed the boat a few times. Drove it up to Tahoe. No further problems other than I need a new old truck.
    I’m in no hurry to spend 30k on a newer used truck. Thanks Scotty.

    Mechanic hell, you need to be a rocket scientist to work on today’s crap. One time I had a problem with my Saturn. The Saturn house hooked it up to the factory live. And Detroit couldn’t tell the dealership how to fix it. I’m old school. 68 Chevelle, real gas, no computers and very little smog. My account picture is going into my Chevelle one day. The mother is sitting in my garage, ready to go.

    I recently bought a 2013 Tahoe with 160k on the clock last year. Thankfully haven't had any major issues other than general maintenance. Transmission running strong, no engine ticks.

    I have seen a 4l60e with a 4.8 v8 that had over 300k on the original transmission and motor. It was the most reliable truck in the fleet.

      @@catfeline1530 On the transmission? That's just as bad as a flush. You need some friction material in your transmission in order for it to shift properly. All automatic transmissions are built like that. Just drain and fill at every 50-60k and you're good. At some point you'll still need to replace the clutch packs in the transmission. There's nothing you can do to avoid that.

The transmission fluid is to provide lubrication to the gears, if you have metal flaking buildup in the fluid due to gear wear, it should be changed. The less wear on the transmission from good lubrication with clean fluid, the longer it should last.

      @@catfeline1530 The reason why the automatic transmission engages gears is because of the friction material from clutch packs. It does this by smooth engagement. All automatic transmissions have them. The friction material on those packs is the first to wear out the most on an automatic transmission. It ends up in the transmission fluid and provides friction and help for the clutch packs to engage. Those clutch packs are submerged in transmission fluid for cooling and prevention of major wear of all components.

    My 2012 GMC Sierra 1500 transmission went out at 75000 miles. Never used for towing. Cost $3200 for a rebuilt 4L60e. Three year 100000 mile warranty. 🙁 I figured I just got a bad one. I bought the truck new. It is in like new shape. Still looks new. It is about the only problem I’ve had. Still cheaper then a new Truck.

      I have 2009 Silverado. Transmission is act bad. 115000 miles. I will drive till brakes. And I rebuilt transmission is cheaper than go buy new truck for 55 thousand dlrs

    My 07 6l90 transmission lasted 390k mile. The 6.0l had 400k on it when I switched it out because of low oil pressure.

      That is a pretty typical 6.0 6l90, gotta be the best gas hd you can buy, to me it's the best period, not a fan of the emissions diesels.

    Take it to Precision Transmission in Amarillo. They charged me 2 grand to pull, build and install. And they future proof it by using heavy duty party on the areas that take more damage. Best transmission shop ive been to. Took 2 days to get my truck back.

    Thanks Scotty! Had my sister find a body shop where she got a fender and bumper pulled straight and headlight assembly installed by the owners kid on a Sunday back when shops were closed Sundays. All for $100 bucks. She went back and gave him a gift certificate for supper, he did a great job and since here truck was paid for, it sure beat the quote she had for nearly $3000 dollars! Great advice.

    Fascinating - bad luck. My electrician has tried Chevy, Ford, and Toyota trucks here in CT. He has found that all three have transmission problems in the mountains of CT after 150,000 miles. He decided his best bet is to buy the truck he likes the most, and then just put in a remanufactured transmission after 150,000 to get another 100,000 out of it before replacing it with a new one. Currently he is back on Ford again after his Toyota failed a second time at 223,000 miles.

    I had a sensor problem with the transmission in my Hyundai Sonata. The mechanic changed the sensor and the car works great now. The procedure cost about $700.

      Yeah i have '04 1500 5.3L vortec Sierra z71 4x4 with 317XXX & an '08 1500 5.3L vortec Sierra z71 4x4 with 160XXX.
      Change the fluids every year. Dont forget diffs, transfer case, etc! Dont be cheap with maintenenace

      Considering how many different fluids there are in a vehicle, changing them all could run thousands of dollars at a garage. You certainly don't need new coolant every year. Seems a bit extreme to me unless I'm putting a 100K on annually.
      Maybe you just like changing fluids and babying your vehicle which is fine with me, I would do mine more often if I had a decent garage to do it in.😄

      @@paulcoenen7918 i thrash my sierras and work them hard frequently. I do run a lot of mileage per year & i just change everything myself for a couple hundred $.
      Coolant is every 3 years, brake fluid i just top up if i have to, atf & rear diff i do every year. Transfer case and front diff every couple years. Its funny people change their engine oil multiple times a year but never touch their atf, diffs or trans case.

    My 4l80e transmission lasted 225,000 miles pulling campers bumper pull and fifthwheel also plowing in the winter. I did put a gm rebuilt transmission. Because the 4l80e has so many updates it made more sense to replace it with new rebuilt

      Haven’t heard much bad out of the 07 to 13 transmissions. My dad has a 2013 with 100k with zero issues.

      @@wesleygarrison6248 I can't really say anything about the transmissions on the trucks. I do know about the 4T65E that was on the Pontiac Grand Prix and the Buick Lucerne. It was made to work with the 3.8/3.9 engines and they did have a lot of problems with the sensors and solenoids. Those parts just weren't well made and had to be replaced fairly often.

    I bought a 2015 Silverado 1500 4x4 from an old retired beekeeper who had it since new until 92000 miles. About 1000 miles down the road cylinder 7 dropped a lifter, now another 2500 miles later the torque converter or trans is toast.

    My favorite is the Allison 5-speed and 6-speed transmissions that are coupled to Duramax diesels. My ride is a 2005 GMC Sierra 2500, with 332,237 miles and no rebuilds or replacements. The Allison and the engine still perform like new, and fluid is super easy to change, with an external screw on oil filter as well. Wish they were all Allison's on these trucks.

    There is a good chance there are updated parts if you buy a reman transmission. From many manufacturers, not just GM. A competent and honest trans shop with a builder may or may not install updated parts, like the drums that crack in that 6L80 in the video. It depends on what was available when the build was done.

      @@SilverShadow02 I've put 40k miles on it? Currently at 153k and I've maintained it and drives great. I thought the vulcans were pretty bullet proof? It's the trans I got to worry about torque converter specifically. Didn't shift too bad before the flush but lucas helps ease my mind ;)

    Both my grandfather and my dad has owned one. Both reached 300k easy with no issues. Only reason they got rid of it was because they just wanted something new. My family has always been chevy, never had a single issue with any of them.

    Those 6 speeds go bad all the time. Little tip: just pull the dipstick and if the fluid looks brown/orange, expect the trans to be on its way out. If you change the old fluid out they usually start slipping so if the fluid looks new then you’ll be able to tell if it’s bad.

    That's why I like my old school Chevrolet trucks I have an 86 K5 military blazer 6.2 diesel th400 and 3.08s and a 78 K10 350 SM465 NP205 4.10s can't beat the old school mechanical engineering .
