Very important topic Hugo. And agree many times when you are awake you are not paying a lot of attention as you are doing other stuff. As long as you can estimate when are you approaching other boats you should be able to short them. Good watch!
Another interesting topic would be how you organise your day. What are your daily routines, what checks of the boat you do, how do you keep in contact with family and friends (satellite phone, etc). The whole adventure is quite interesting itself, and these details help understand better how is the experience. Fair winds!
Thanks for this video! Really interesting! Can you (for example) also make a video about how you handle the boat by yourself? Or how you cook while sailing solo? Just interested in these kind of solo-sailing topics! Or maybe a video about how you read the wind and plan a route? Good luck for the rest of the adventure!
Very sensible approach. If I were to add anything, I would underscore importance of a radar, as the only 100% sure device that will detect other vessels. Fancy once can even detect "small" icebergs, so should be good for whales and containers. With such a set up, theoretically, you can sleep for long periods of time. I find enthusiazm around AIS puzzling, as there are planty of vessels that either do not have them or don't have them turned on. Radar is a must.
Good point about the radar! Although it will be very hard to spot whales or containers with that as they are almost fully submerged. Radar is also definitely not a 100% sure device. It can be hard to pickup glassfiber boats without good radar reflectors, which most pleasure and sailboats are built out of. But it is a good one to add into the mix 👌
@@Boatlifeisbest I have a relatively basic Furuno Wifi radar on my boat and yes, from a longer range is can be spotty, but form a range that matters, around 2 miles, I have not had a problem. Modern broadband radar are miles ahead of the conventional radar technology. They easily detect nonmetalic small object.
Hi everyone! I was wondering: with all the progress so far with radar / AI and autonomous cars, isn't there any tool to use a program using a dashcam to look in front of the ship and detect objects and boats? It should not be so hard to do, so maybe its already exist? Safe and good sailing every one! I don't have any boat yet, but one day I will !
Good thinking. There are some companies who are developing exactly that product. The first versions are being used at the moment. Mostly for (solo) racing boats etc. It will be cool to see how the technology develops and prices come down. Have a look at www.watchit.ai and www.sea.ai
Yeah it is cool tech and will be a game changer once prices come down. The cheapest model from sea.ai is 10k euro ex vat at the moment and go up to 43k ex vat for their top off the line model. 10k isn’t thaaaat far off a complete radar system though. So I’m hopeful for the future.
That´s how we do it too, when I am sailing solo together with my boat. After 20.000 miles so far all has been great. Wish you a safe trip.
Sounds like you already have a lot of experience! Where are you sailing currently?

Thanks for the ideas. I will try and touch upon those subjects in the coming videos.
Lekker bezig Hugo, zet m op!
Hier had k wel wat aan thanks!

Glad you liked it! I seem to have some more daily videos to go haha. So I will try and touch upon those topics. Any other topics that come to mind?

Good to hear your experience👌 modern radar technology has come a long way.

@@Boatlifeisbest Awesome, I was really thinking about this!
Must be pretty expensive at the moment, but yeah, let's see how its can evolve.

@@Boatlifeisbest yeah I saw that lol, way too much expensive, half the price I want to put in a boat
